Home Care in Berrylands, Surbiton KT5

Live-in care, short breaks and visiting care where we have a carer nearby, for the 1930s streets between Surbiton, the Hogsmill and New Malden.

Yes, we can provide home care in Berrylands. The houses here suit live-in care well, and that is the service we can promise anywhere in KT5; regular visits depend on having a carer who lives close by, so ask and we will give you a straight answer. Care starts with a free home assessment by Jackie, our registered manager, and a written care plan.

Houses built on Berrylands Farm

Almost all of Berrylands went up in the 1930s on the fields of the old Berrylands Farm, around the station that opened in 1933. The result is a neighbourhood of semi-detached houses, mostly with three bedrooms and a garden, a few detached houses and not many flats. On Grand Avenue and Elmbridge Avenue there is a group of Modernist houses from the 1934 Parkside estate.

They are generally good houses to receive care in. Where the stairs are a straight flight, a stairlift can often be fitted. The front room can become a bedroom if the stairs stop being safe. The upstairs bathroom is often the weak point: a bath with a shower over it is hard to use with poor balance, and a level-access shower or bath lift is something to ask the council's occupational therapy service about.

Can we have a live-in carer in a three-bedroom semi?

Usually, yes. The main requirement for live-in care is a bedroom the carer can call their own, and in a Berrylands semi the second or third bedroom normally does the job. The carer also needs a daily break, which we write into the care plan, and somebody covers it if the person cannot be left.

Somewhere to walk to. Berrylands Park sits on the site of the old Surbiton Lagoon, a 1930s lido that closed in 1980. Alexandra Park, the Fishponds and the paths beside the Hogsmill are all close by. A slow walk with a carer, or ten minutes on a bench, is a reasonable part of a companionship visit.

Buses, the station and the shops

Berrylands station is on South Western Railway's line from Surbiton to Waterloo, under half an hour from Waterloo. From our Lewisham office that still adds up to well over an hour each way, which is why visiting care here depends on carer availability. The K2 bus stops by the station and runs one way to Kingston Hospital and the other way to Hook Parade, which is handy for appointments.

Day-to-day shopping is on four small parades: Chiltern Drive, Alexandra Drive, Berrylands Road and Surbiton Hill Park.

One local quirk: the GP practice called Berrylands Surgery is not in Berrylands. It is based at Surbiton Health Centre on Ewell Road, KT6 6EZ. If your parent is registered there, that is where their GP appointments will be.

Breaks for the person doing the caring

If you look after a husband, wife or parent here, the first step is a carer's assessment. Kingston Council has Kingston Carers' Network carry these out, from its base on Ewell Road in Tolworth (020 3031 2757). An eligible carer can get council-funded relief care, explained on the council's respite care page. On top of that we can arrange a live-in carer for a planned week away, or regular sit-in visits where we can staff them. See respite care in Kingston.

Kingston Council, assessments and cost

Berrylands is in the Royal Borough of Kingston. A care needs assessment is free: use the council's online form or call Adult Social Care on 020 8547 5005. If the council agrees to fund care, it means-tests income and savings first. Our Kingston home care page goes through direct payments and NHS Continuing Healthcare. We don't publish prices; you get a written quote after our assessment.

Berrylands FAQs

Questions about care in Berrylands

Questions families ask us about Berrylands. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Our spare room is the small box room over the stairs. Is that enough for a live-in carer?

It can be, if a single bed, some storage and a bit of space to relax will fit. We look at the room during the assessment and tell you honestly if it won't work.

Mum can't use the bath any more. What can a carer do until it is adapted?

A carer can help with a full wash at the basin or in the bedroom, which is safe and keeps her clean and comfortable. Meanwhile ask the council for an occupational therapy assessment about a bath lift or shower.

Is Berrylands part of Surbiton or New Malden for your purposes?

It doesn't matter for care. Berrylands has Surbiton KT5 addresses and borders New Malden across the Hogsmill, and the whole area is in the Royal Borough of Kingston. We also have pages for Surbiton and New Malden.

Dad goes to Kingston Hospital for regular check-ups. Can a carer take him?

Yes. The K2 from Berrylands station goes to the hospital, or a carer can go with him by taxi. Escorting him and waiting with him can be built into his visits.

Can you give me a weekend off once a month?

Yes, a regular break like that can be planned. A live-in carer can stay for the weekend, and booking well ahead makes it easier to keep the same carer each time.
