Live-in Care in Marks Gate

A carer who lives in, for someone on the Marks Gate estate north of Eastern Avenue, so that care no longer depends on how often the buses run up Whalebone Lane North.

Yes, we provide live-in care in Marks Gate. A carer moves into the home, with their own bedroom, and supports one person or a couple; we arrange their arrival, daily break and holiday cover. It starts with a free assessment at the house, which we travel out from Lewisham to do, and a written care plan.

Is there room for a live-in carer in a Marks Gate home?

Often, yes. The estate went up in the 1950s as a mix of council family houses, maisonettes and small blocks of flats, and each answers the question differently.

  • A two- or three-bedroom house: with the children grown up, a bedroom is usually free. The carer needs a single bed, a chest of drawers and a door that closes.
  • A two-bedroom maisonette or flat: usually workable, once the second bedroom is cleared of stored furniture.
  • A one-bedroom flat: live-in care cannot work. The alternatives are visiting care in Marks Gate if we can staff it, a council transfer request, or a relative's home with a spare room.

When the stairs become the problem

The riskiest moment for someone unsteady is the stairs at night. The carer is in the house but asleep in their own room, so the safer plan is often a bed in the front room and a commode, with the carer's bedroom upstairs. A mobile hoist has to fit the room it is used in and will not go up a maisonette staircase. We look at this at the assessment, and the council's occupational therapists assess for equipment and adaptations.

Changeover day: getting a carer to the estate

Marks Gate has no station, so every new carer, and every replacement covering holidays, arrives by train and then bus, with a suitcase. We plan the route with them beforehand. There are three ways in:

  • Elizabeth line to Chadwell Heath, then route 62 north from the station across the A12 to the Marks Gate Community Centre and Billet Road.
  • Elizabeth line to Romford, then route 296 from Romford Station along Padnall Road into the estate.
  • Central line to Newbury Park, then the 296 the other way, past King George Hospital.

If a carer comes by car, check whether your road is in a controlled parking zone, as the council has been adding new zones around the borough. Inside a zone, residents can buy visitor permits online, and the council's parking permits page lists the other types.

Where the carer takes their daily break

Marks Gate is small, so the carer's daily break usually means the green, the community centre or a bus ride off the estate:

  • Marks Gate Open Space at Tantony Green, a small green with outdoor gym equipment and a meeting shelter.
  • Hainault Forest Country Park, a short ride north on the 362, with woodland walks and a lake.
  • The library in Marks Gate Community Centre on Rose Lane, which is volunteer-run with council support; check its hours before relying on it.
  • The shops on Chadwell Heath High Road, a short ride south on the 62.

Outside the break, the same places can stay part of the person's own week, with the carer alongside.

Home from King George Hospital

For Marks Gate the nearest A&E is King George Hospital in Goodmayes, with Queen's in Romford as the trust's other main site. Both are run by Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. The first week home is when needs change day to day, which is hard to follow with short visits this far from our Lewisham office. A live-in carer can be there when the patient transport arrives, sort out the ward's medicines and see the first night through.

For follow-up clinics, the 362 ends at King George and the 296 stops at Barley Lane. Tell us the likely discharge date early, as matching a carer takes time. Our hospital discharge page explains what to ask the ward.

Caring for a partner on the estate? Some couples in Marks Gate have shared the same council or right-to-buy house for decades. One live-in carer can give personal care to the partner who needs it and help the other with meals, shopping and the stairs, so neither has to move. If both need two people to help them move, or care is needed through the night, we will say so at the assessment.

Who pays for live-in care in Marks Gate?

Council funding comes through Barking and Dagenham: a needs assessment, then a means test, and the council's share can be taken as a direct payment. Our Barking and Dagenham live-in care page sets out that route. If the main need is a health need, ask the ward or GP about NHS Continuing Healthcare. We quote in writing after the free assessment and publish no standard price. See also live-in care in London.

Live-in care in Marks Gate: your questions

Questions families ask us about Marks Gate. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum's flat on the estate has one bedroom. Could the carer sleep on the sofa bed?

No. A live-in carer needs a bedroom of their own to rest properly. In a one-bedroom flat we would talk about visiting care or the other options instead.

How will a new carer find a house in Marks Gate with no station nearby?

We plan the route with them before changeover day, usually the Elizabeth line and then the 62 or 296 bus. Tell us anything that helps, such as which entrance to use.

Dad is in King George Hospital and the ward wants him home soon. Can live-in care start on the day he is discharged?

It can, if we have had enough notice to arrange the assessment and match a carer. Call us as soon as discharge is being discussed, not on the morning itself, and tell the ward you are arranging live-in care.

Our maisonette has steps up to the front door. Does that rule out live-in care?

No, but it affects how the person gets out. A carer can help on the steps with someone who can still manage them. For a wheelchair user it may mean asking the council about adaptations or a ground-floor move, and we will raise it at the assessment.

Who stays with my husband while the carer takes a break?

We agree that before care starts: you, a relative or neighbour, or a time when he is safe alone for a while. If nobody can, tell us, as the plan must allow for it.
