Live-in Care in Seven Kings, IG3

A live-in carer in a Seven Kings terrace or flat: working out where the carer sleeps, fitting the care around the household's food and faith, and changeovers at the Elizabeth line station.

Yes, we provide live-in care in Seven Kings, as long as the home has a bedroom the carer can use. The carer lives with your relative and helps with personal care, meals, medicines and company, with daily breaks and nights covered in the plan. We begin with a free home assessment, then a written care plan and quote.

Is there space for a live-in carer in a Seven Kings terrace?

Sometimes, and it is the first thing we check. The streets around the High Road were built between 1898 and 1910 as Edwardian terraces, mostly two or three bedrooms. In a three-bedroom house with only one or two people living there, a spare room is realistic. But these are family houses, and many have adult children, grandchildren or lodgers in every room. A carer cannot share a bedroom or sleep on the settee, so if every room is taken, live-in care will not work until one is freed.

Look at the room as the carer will live in it for weeks: a single bed, a wardrobe or rail, a window, and somewhere to charge a phone. The small back bedroom over the kitchen is often the one that ends up being used, and it is usually fine.

If your relative lives in a converted flat

Some Seven Kings terraces have been split into an upstairs and a downstairs flat. A two-bedroom conversion can take a live-in carer; a one-bedroom one cannot. If that is your relative's flat, visits are the realistic starting point, and Seven Kings is on the Elizabeth line, which makes it one of the easier parts of Redbridge for us to reach (see home care in Seven Kings). Where the family owns the whole house, it is worth asking whether the other flat could become the home with the spare room.

In an upstairs flat, check the shared staircase too. If your relative cannot get down it safely, an outing with the carer is not possible either, and that needs planning.

Food, prayer and a full house

If your relative's terrace is shared by more than one generation, a live-in carer joins a household that already has its own way of doing things. Depending on the family, that can mean cooking vegetarian food, halal meat or no beef; helping someone get ready for prayer, or to the gurdwara, mosque, mandir or church; and working alongside relatives who still want to do some of the caring. The care plan should say who does what, so the carer is not left guessing and the family is not edged out.

All of this goes into the care plan, in the family's words. We cannot promise a carer who shares your relative's faith or language, and we do not claim to. What we do is brief the carer properly before they arrive and change the match if it is not working.

Hoists in a narrow front room

Edwardian rooms are not wide. If your relative needs a hoist, the bed usually comes downstairs into the front room, and the furniture goes back to the walls. We check the space at the assessment, and the council's Occupational Therapy Team, which has its own referral on the Adult Care contact page, decides what equipment fits. The carer then sleeps upstairs, so we look at how they will be alerted at night.

Changeovers and breaks. Seven Kings station is on the Elizabeth line with step-free access, and has direct trains from Liverpool Street, Whitechapel and Stratford, so a carer with a suitcase can usually get here with one change. For the carer's daily break, Seven Kings Park, a Green Flag park, has formal rose beds and plenty of seating, and Seven Kings Library is at 679 High Road.

Discharge from King George

The nearest acute hospital is King George Hospital in Goodmayes, the next neighbourhood east. If your relative is on a ward and the family thinks they will need help through the day and night, call us early. We can assess, look at the spare room and agree a start date that fits the discharge. Our hospital discharge support page explains more.

Funding and what happens next

Redbridge Council's free needs assessment and means test are explained on our Redbridge live-in care page, along with direct payments. NHS Continuing Healthcare is a separate route for people whose needs are mainly health needs. If you pay privately, we give you a written quote after the assessment. Ask a question
Our son and his family live with Mum. Can a live-in carer fit in too?

Only if there is a bedroom just for the carer. If there is, a busy household is fine, and we agree with the family who does what so the carer's work and breaks are clear.

Dad only eats vegetarian food cooked at home. Will the carer cook it?

Yes. We write his diet and how he likes his food into the care plan, and family can show the carer his usual dishes in the first days.

Mum's flat is above a shop on the High Road. Is that suitable?

It depends on the number of bedrooms and the stairs. With two bedrooms and a safe way in and out, it can work. We will look at both at the assessment.

Can the carer take Dad to his place of worship?

Yes, if it is safe for him and in his care plan. Tell us where and when he goes, and we plan the carer's day around it.
