Live-in Care in Goodmayes, IG3
For families arranging live-in care after a stay at King George Hospital, or before one: a live-in carer in a Goodmayes terrace or flat, with breaks in Goodmayes Park and changeovers by the Elizabeth line.
Yes, we provide live-in care in Goodmayes, in IG3 and the Redbridge part of RM6. A carer lives in your relative's spare room and supports them day to day, with breaks and nights planned so the arrangement lasts. It starts with a free assessment, which we can often arrange while your relative is still in hospital, then a written care plan and quote.
Can live-in care start straight from King George Hospital?
Yes, and in Goodmayes the hospital is part of the neighbourhood. King George Hospital is on Barley Lane at the northern edge of Goodmayes, so a fall, a stroke or a chest infection usually means a stay there. Live-in care suits a discharge that is not straightforward: someone who is unsteady at night, confused after an infection, or going home to a partner who cannot manage alone. Four short visits leave long gaps, and a live-in carer fills them.
The ward will involve Redbridge Adult Social Care in planning the discharge, and short-term reablement may come first; the council's leaving hospital page sets out its part. What helps us most is a call as soon as the family thinks live-in care might be needed. We can then:
- assess your relative on the ward or at home, and look at the room the carer will use;
- ask the ward what equipment and medicines are coming home, and when;
- agree a start date with you that lines up with the discharge.
The first fortnight at home
The early days after a hospital stay are when things are most likely to go wrong. A live-in carer is there for the first night, notices if your relative is eating or drinking less, keeps to the new medicines, and is around for the GP, the district nurse or the reablement team when they call. Outpatient follow-ups at King George are a short trip, and the carer can go too. Our hospital discharge support page explains how we plan this.
Terraces, new flats and the carer's bedroom
Goodmayes is still mostly Edwardian terraces, built up between 1898 and 1910, with few later additions. A three-bedroom terrace normally has room for a carer; a two-bedroom one may, if only one person lives there. Steep stairs and an upstairs bathroom often mean a bed in the front room for a while after discharge, with the carer sleeping upstairs, close enough to hear.
If your relative lives in a flat, a two-bedroom flat can work well for live-in care, especially on one level. A one-bedroom flat cannot, and if that is your relative's situation, visiting care in Goodmayes or a stay with family may be the answer.
When one partner is the patient
Sometimes the person coming home from King George has a husband or wife who has been caring alone and is exhausted. One live-in carer can look after the partner who has been in hospital and take the practical load off the other. Both sets of needs go into the care plan. If the partner at home also needs support, we plan for that from the start.
Getting out, for the carer and your relative. Goodmayes Park, a Green Flag park with a sensory garden by the tennis courts, is the obvious place for the carer's daily break, and Goodmayes Library on Goodmayes Lane is nearby. For someone living with dementia, the Redbridge Respite Care Association runs a day centre on Padnall Road in Chadwell Heath, just east of Goodmayes.
Changeover day at Goodmayes station
Carers usually arrive on the Elizabeth line. Goodmayes station has lifts to all platforms, which helps with a suitcase, and the 364 and EL3 buses stop outside. The outgoing carer hands over in person: care plan, medicines record, recent appointments and anything the hospital has asked to be watched.
If the incoming carer drives, check whether the street is in a controlled parking zone. Redbridge visitor permits are bought online by the resident, each valid for a single day, and posted out within about two working weeks, so order them before a hospital discharge, not after. Blue Badge holders can get some packs free.
Paying for live-in care in Goodmayes
A hospital stay is a good moment to ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare, which can fund care in full where needs are mainly health needs; the ward can start the checklist. Otherwise, Redbridge Council's free needs assessment and means test apply, as explained on our Redbridge live-in care page. Near the end of life, live-in care can work alongside Saint Francis Hospice, which serves Redbridge, and our palliative care. We quote in writing after the assessment. Goodmayes live-in care questions
Questions families ask us about Goodmayes. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionDo you need to see the house as well as seeing Mum on the ward?
Usually, yes. We can often see Mum on the ward, with the ward's agreement, but the house matters just as much for live-in care: the carer's room, the stairs, and where Mum will sleep if she cannot manage them yet.
Dad has been discharged with reablement visits. Can a live-in carer start when they finish?
Yes. Ask the reablement team when the visits are due to end and call us beforehand, so there is no gap between the two.
Mum is moving into a new two-bedroom flat in Goodmayes. Can the carer move in with her?
Yes, if the second bedroom is for the carer. A flat on one level often makes care easier. Check the building's entry system and lift, and tell us about them at the assessment.
Dad was taken to Queen's Hospital in Romford, not King George. Does that change the plan?
Very little. Queen's is run by the same trust as King George, and because Dad lives in Redbridge, the ward still involves Redbridge Adult Social Care in his discharge. Tell us which ward he is on, and we plan the assessment and start date the same way.
Dad needs care for the rest of his life and wants to stay at home. Can live-in care cover that?
Yes. The carer works alongside the district nurses, his GP and, where they are involved, Saint Francis Hospice, and we update the plan as his needs change.
