Live-in Care in Upney

A live-in carer for the Becontree-era houses around Upney Lane, often arranged when someone is ready to leave hospital but not ready to manage alone.

Yes, we provide live-in care in Upney, IG11. We do a free home assessment, agree a written care plan with you, and then a trained carer moves into the spare room to support the person through the day and be in the house at night. It suits people coming home from hospital to a house with a steep staircase, and couples who want to stay together.

Can Dad come home from hospital to an Upney house with a steep staircase?

Often he can, if the house is set up before he arrives. Most homes around Upney Lane are interwar Becontree houses: two storeys, a narrow staircase, and the bathroom upstairs. After a fall or a stroke, the ward will want to know how he will manage those stairs, and "his wife will help" is not always a safe answer.

A live-in carer changes that conversation. With someone in the house all day and overnight, the hospital's occupational therapist can plan around a carer who is there for every trip to the toilet, every wash and every attempt at the stairs. The usual choices are:

  1. Living downstairs for now: a bed in the front room, a commode, and a strip wash at the sink until he is steadier.
  2. A stairlift: worth it if he will be living in the house long term and the staircase is wide enough. The council's occupational therapists can advise.
  3. Supervised stairs: where a physiotherapist has cleared him to climb with someone beside him, the carer walks every flight with him.

Barking Community Hospital on Upney Lane has an urgent treatment centre but no A&E, so a hospital stay usually means Queen's Hospital in Romford or King George Hospital in Goodmayes. Tell the discharge team as soon as you decide on live-in care, and send us the expected date. Our hospital discharge support page explains how we work with the ward.

Where everyone sleeps when the bed comes downstairs

If Dad moves to the front room, the carer still has their own bedroom upstairs, which might be the box room or a grown-up child's old room. That is fine, as long as the carer can hear him at night. A simple baby monitor or a pendant alarm usually solves it.

If Mum is still upstairs in the main bedroom and Dad is downstairs, the carer takes the remaining room. In a two-bedroom house with both partners upstairs and no third room, live-in care may not fit, and we will tell you so at the assessment.

Changeovers at Upney station

Upney station is on the District line, one stop east of Barking. It has no lift, so a carer with a heavy suitcase should expect stairs. Barking, one stop away, connects to the Hammersmith & City line, c2c and the Overground. Route 62 stops at Upney station and links it with Barking station and Chadwell Heath station on the Elizabeth line.

Much of the Becontree estate has no parking controls, but the council has been adding zones near stations. If your road is close to Upney station and in one, a family member or carer arriving by car can be covered with visitor vouchers bought online for four hours or a day.

Two parks and a market for the carer's break

A live-in carer has a protected break every day. Upney is well placed for it:

  • Barking Park, entered from Longbridge Road, has a long boating lake, toilets and a car park. The 62 from Upney station stops at Hulse Avenue by the park.
  • Mayesbrook Park, off Lodge Avenue, has lakes, a nature area and an outdoor gym for a carer who wants to use the time to exercise.
  • Barking town centre, one stop west, has East Street market and the library at the Barking Learning Centre.

Getting to the Barking Park lake with a wheelchair or a walking frame can become something to work toward after a hospital stay.

The urgent treatment centre on Upney Lane

Barking Community Hospital, a short walk up Upney Lane from the station, has a GP-led urgent treatment centre that NELFT lists as open from 8am to 10pm. It is not an A&E, but it is the nearest place for a minor injury or a worrying wound. With a carer living in, someone is there to judge whether a fall or a cut needs it, take your relative there and back, and tell the family what was said. Anything serious, or anything after 10pm, means 999 or the A&E at King George or Queen's. We write in the care plan when the carer should use the urgent treatment centre, when to ring 111 and when to call you.

Funding and the next step

The council route, direct payments and NHS Continuing Healthcare are covered on our Barking and Dagenham live-in care page. If the person is still in hospital, ask the ward whether a CHC checklist has been done. We quote in writing after the free assessment. Upney FAQs

Upney live-in care: questions

Questions families ask us about Upney. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad's bed is moving to the front room. Can the carer still sleep upstairs?

Yes. The carer keeps a bedroom of their own upstairs and uses a monitor or alarm to hear him at night. If he needs help several times every night, we discuss a different arrangement before care starts.

The ward says Mum can go home once there is care in place. How much notice do you need?

As much as you can give. Call us when discharge is first mentioned, not when the date is fixed. We will assess, ideally on the ward, and tell you honestly whether we can match a carer for that date.

Can the live-in carer help with the physio exercises the hospital gave her?

Yes, where they are written into the care plan. The carer can prompt and support exercises set by the physiotherapist, and tell you or the community team if something seems to be getting harder.

We are near Upney station. Does our road need a parking permit for the carer?

Only if it is in a controlled parking zone and someone arrives by car. A carer who comes by Tube needs nothing. Check the signs on your road; if it is controlled, buy a visitor voucher for the changeover day.

Can the live-in carer take Dad to his follow-up appointments after discharge?

Yes. Going with him to outpatient clinics at Queen's or King George, or to his GP, can be part of the care plan. Tell us the dates so the carer's break and the travel are planned around them.
