Live-in Care in Upton Park

A carer who lives in, follows the household's routines around food, prayer and family, and keeps a walk to Plashet Park or Green Street in the week.

Yes. We can place a live-in carer anywhere in Upton Park, on both the E13 and E6 sides. A carer moves into a spare bedroom and helps one person or a couple with personal care, medication, meals and getting out, while keeping to how the household already lives. We begin with a free home assessment, usually led by Jackie, and agree a written care plan before anyone moves in.

What the house needs before a carer can move in

The one thing that cannot be worked around is a bedroom for the carer. Upton Park homes fall into two groups:

  • A whole Victorian terrace. There is often a third bedroom or box room, though the bathroom is usually upstairs.
  • A flat in a converted terrace. A two-bedroom flat can work for live-in care; a one-bedroom flat cannot.

Where a husband and wife share the main bedroom, one live-in carer can look after both of them, and the second room goes to the carer.

Faith, food and the shape of the day

How a carer fits into the home matters as much as the tasks on the care plan. Before matching a carer, we ask about and write down:

  • How the kitchen is kept: halal, vegetarian, no beef, separate utensils, shoes off at the door.
  • Prayer times, washing before prayer, and help getting to the mosque, temple, gurdwara or church the person attends.
  • Fasting, and how it fits with medication. That conversation belongs with the GP or pharmacist, and the carer follows what they advise.
  • Personal care preferences, including whether the person wants a carer of the same sex.
  • Who visits, when the family gathers, and what is private.

Language comes up too. We cannot guarantee a carer who speaks a given language, but we will tell you plainly how close a match we can make.

Upstairs flats and the new blocks on the Boleyn Ground

In an upper-floor conversion, the front door may be at the top of a flight of stairs with no lift. A live-in carer can help on those stairs every time, on the person's own schedule. A hoist or hospital bed is harder to get into these flats, so we check the stairwell and doorways at the assessment.

The flats built on the former Boleyn Ground, where West Ham United played until 2016, are the opposite case: lifts, level floors and room to turn a wheelchair. They suit live-in care for someone who uses a wheelchair or needs a hoist, as long as there is a second bedroom for the carer.

Swapping carers: Upton Park station and Sunday parking

On changeover day, the outgoing and incoming carers meet at the home. Most arrive by the District or Hammersmith & City line to Upton Park station, which is on Green Street itself. If the incoming carer drives, note that the Upton Park, Boleyn and Green Street North parking zones are all controlled Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm, according to the council's list of zones. A Sunday or evening handover avoids the restrictions. Otherwise, book a visitor parking permit on MiPermit, up to seven days ahead, once you have registered for visitor access.

Plashet Park, Green Street Library and the market

The carer's daily break is protected, so we plan where the person will be during it and where the carer can go. Upton Park has good options for both:

  • Plashet Park on Plashet Grove has a café open Tuesday to Sunday. The council's park listing also mentions Tai Chi at the café on Tuesday mornings and Walking Yoga on Fridays, gentle sessions a carer and the person could try together.
  • Green Street Library at Queen's Square, 416-420 Green Street, open Monday to Saturday. It is a quiet place for the carer's own hour off.
  • Queen's Market and Green Street, for a familiar trip out. A carer living in can make it part of the weekly routine again, with help carrying the shopping home.

After a stay at Newham University Hospital

Newham University Hospital on Glen Road in Plaistow is the local hospital for most of Upton Park. If the person will need support at home, the ward passes their details to the council's Integrated Discharge Hub. A live-in carer settles the person in, follows the discharge letter and is there on the first nights, which a working family often cannot be. Tell the ward as soon as you decide, and we will be honest about when we can start.

How much does live-in care cost in Upton Park?

We quote in writing once we have seen the home and the care needed, including whether it is for one person or two. Newham Council may contribute after a needs and financial assessment, and the funding can be paid as a direct payment to an agency you choose. NHS Continuing Healthcare covers some people with mainly health needs. Our Newham live-in care page covers each route, and home care in Upton Park describes visiting care for anyone who needs less than a carer living in. Upton Park live-in care: questions families ask

Questions families ask us about Upton Park. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Can the live-in carer cook Mum's food the way she likes it?

Yes. We write her recipes, ingredients and kitchen rules into the care plan, and the family can show the carer how dishes are made in the first days. If she shops at Queen's Market, the carer can take her or shop from her list.

Dad's flat is up a flight of stairs with no lift. Can he still go out with a live-in carer?

Often, yes, with the carer beside him on the stairs. If the stairs are no longer safe even with help, we will say so and talk through equipment from the council's occupational therapists, or a move to a ground-floor or lift-served flat.

Can we ask for a female carer for my mother?

Yes. Tell us at the assessment and we record it in the care plan, then match with that in mind, including for any cover during holidays.

The whole family comes on Sundays. Where does the carer go?

Busy family days can be a good time for the carer's break, as long as someone is agreed to be responsible while the carer is out. We plan it so the person is never left without someone in charge of their care.
