Home Care in Newham
Visiting carers for personal care, medication and help around the house, from the estates of Canning Town and Custom House to the terraced streets of East Ham and Forest Gate.
Yes, we provide home care in Newham. A carer visits at set times for washing and dressing, medication, meals and company, and the visits are planned around a free home assessment and a written care plan. Visiting care is easiest for us to staff in the south and west of the borough; further north-east it depends on which carers are free, so call and ask.
Which parts of Newham can a visiting carer reach?
Our office is on Lewisham High Street in SE13; we have no office in Newham. The DLR and Jubilee line reach Canning Town in roughly 25 to 30 minutes, and West Ham and Stratford in about 35 to 40. Custom House, Silvertown and the Royal Docks are similar, via Canning Town or via Woolwich and one stop north on the Elizabeth line.
Plaistow, Upton Park, East Ham and Beckton are around 40 to 50 minutes away, and Forest Gate and Manor Park 45 to 55 minutes via Stratford. Visits there depend on carer availability, and we would rather say so on the first call than miss a morning visit. If regular visits are not realistic at your address, live-in care is not affected by distance at all.
What a visit can cover
- Personal care: getting up, washing or showering, dressing, continence care and getting ready for bed
- Medication support, from prompting to assisting, recorded at every visit
- Preparing breakfast, lunch or an evening meal, and checking food and drink are being kept up
- Home help: laundry, changing beds, washing up and a tidy kitchen
- Companionship, a walk to the shops on Barking Road or Green Street, or getting to an appointment
- A sit-in service while a family carer goes out
We have been registered with the CQC since October 2023 and have not yet been inspected, so we have no rating yet.
Bay-fronted terraces, estate lifts and Docklands towers
Most of Newham's older residents live in two-storey Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Forest Gate, Manor Park, East Ham, Upton Park and Plaistow, many split into flats or shared by more than one generation. Stairs are steep and the bathroom small, often upstairs, so the first thing we check is whether washing can be done safely, and whether a shower seat, stairlift or commode would help.
On the post-war estates of Canning Town, Custom House and Plaistow, the lift is what matters: when it fails, someone on an upper floor is stuck indoors. Beckton's 1980s houses are often easier to adapt for living on one floor, and the new blocks at Stratford, East Village and Silvertown usually have lifts and level access.
Parking zones and the carer permit
Newham's residential parking zones keep very different hours: Stratford Central and Plaistow run Monday to Saturday 8am to 6.30pm, Forest Gate and Manor Park 9am to 5pm, and East Village and the Royal Docks seven days a week, with later hours around the London Stadium on event days. If carers drive to you, a resident with no off-road parking can buy one Residential Carer parking permit through MiPermit. The council lists it at £11. It can be swapped between carers' cars but is valid only in its own zone. For privately arranged care, the council asks for a dated GP or health professional's letter and an Attendance Allowance, PIP or DLA care award letter.
Asking Newham Council for an assessment
New requests go to the Access to Adult Social Care Team on 020 8430 2000, option 2 (Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm, Friday 9am to 4.45pm), by email, or through the council's online form, all listed on its contacting adult social care page. The assessment can be face to face, by phone or a self-assessment that a relative can complete, and urgent cases go to the Access Visiting Team.
If the council finds you eligible, it can arrange care itself or pay you a direct payment, which can pay a care agency of your choice. Its in-house Direct Payments Team holds a drop-in on the first Friday of each month, 10am to 12pm, at The Resource Centre, 200 Chargeable Lane, Plaistow.
Leaving Newham University Hospital? If ward staff think someone will struggle at home, they refer to the Integrated Discharge Hub, which can arrange equipment, community health services or a care package. The council's free reablement service (up to six weeks) and the Home and Settle Service (up to four weeks) may come first. Ask the ward what has been arranged, and call us while the discharge date is still being planned if you want private care to follow on. The council explains the process on its help leaving hospital pages. Read about our hospital discharge support.
How much does home care cost in Newham?
If the council arranges your care, it carries out a financial assessment. Newham says people with savings over £23,250 may have to pay the full cost, and below that the council works out a contribution from income and savings. If you are paying privately, we give a written quote after the home assessment, because the price depends on how many visits are needed, when they happen and what they involve. We do not quote figures over the phone. Where needs are mainly health needs, ask the GP or ward about an NHS Continuing Healthcare assessment. Our guide to paying for care in London covers all three routes.
Dementia support in Plaistow, Canning Town and East Ham
Newham Memory Services, at First Avenue Resource Centre in Plaistow, takes referrals mainly through the GP. Newham New Deal Partnership runs free memory cafes at Canning Town Community Neighbourhood Centre in Rathbone Market and at East Ham Library, both listed on the council's dementia support page. Visits can fit around these sessions; see our dementia care page.

Newham FAQs
Home care in Newham: questions families ask
Questions families ask us about Newham. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMy father lives in Manor Park. Can you send a carer every morning?
Possibly, but Manor Park is one of the furthest parts of Newham from our office, so a fixed daily morning visit depends on having a carer free who can make that journey reliably. Call us with the times you need and we will give you a straight answer. If daily visits are not workable, live-in care is.
Mum's address is E12. Is that Newham or Redbridge?
It could be either. Manor Park and Little Ilford are in Newham, but the Aldersbrook side of E12 is in Redbridge. Check the council tax bill: the council that sends it is the one that carries out care assessments.
Dad was treated at the Royal London, not Newham Hospital. Does that change anything?
The Royal London is run by the same trust, Barts Health, and Newham residents with serious injuries are often treated there. Ask the ward discharge team how the referral to Newham Adult Social Care is being made, and tell us the expected date so we can check what we can cover.
Can we use a Newham direct payment to pay JNP Sidona?
Yes, if it is in the support plan. Newham's direct payments can pay a care agency you choose. Tell the social worker you want to use us, and we will work to the plan they agree.
My aunt is in a council flat in Canning Town and the lift keeps breaking. What then?
We note the stairs and the building's access at the assessment, and the carer knows the route in. Report repeated lift failures to the landlord. If she cannot get out safely, tell the council's Access team as well, because it affects her care needs.
