Home Care and Live-in Care in West Norwood

Care at home in SE27: Norwood Road, Knights Hill, Norwood High Street, the roads round the cemetery and the estates climbing towards Gipsy Hill and Central Hill.

We can provide care in West Norwood, and here live-in care is usually the more dependable choice. West Norwood is about 45 minutes to an hour from our Lewisham office, so regular visits depend on whether we have a carer free for your times, and we will tell you honestly when you call. A live-in carer moves in, so the distance makes no difference to them.

Why live-in care suits SE27

The one firm requirement for live-in care is a spare bedroom for the carer, and West Norwood has more of those than the north of the borough. Much of SE27 is Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses, with interwar semis on the slopes and larger houses in the conservation areas round Lancaster Avenue and Rosendale Road. One carer living in can provide personal care, meals, medication and company through the day. They can also look after a couple when only one partner needs a lot of help, which keeps two people in their own home.

The council estates are different. The post-war York Hill, Fern Lodge, Portobello and Holderness estates, and Central Hill further up towards Upper Norwood, are mainly flats. A flat with a second bedroom can take a live-in carer. In a one-bedroom flat, visits are the realistic option.

The hills

The centre of West Norwood sits in a bowl, with Knights Hill, Gipsy Hill and the roads towards Tulse Hill and Streatham rising on three sides. Someone who walks to the shops on Norwood Road easily on the level may stop going out because of the slope home. A carer walking alongside, or pushing a wheelchair, can make that trip possible again. Norwood Park and the paths through West Norwood Cemetery, one of London's "Magnificent Seven" Victorian cemeteries, are places to aim for on a companionship visit.

Dementia support within reach

Two of the borough's dementia services are within reach of SE27:

  • Central Hill Day Services at 1 Lunham Road, SE19, is one of the council's two dementia day centres. Places come through a needs assessment, and the centres are listed on the council's day care page.
  • The Gipsy Hill Magnolia Club, run by Age UK Lambeth's dementia service, meets every Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm at Christ Church Gipsy Hill, 1 Highland Road, SE19 1DP, and there is free parking.
  • Diagnosis comes through the GP, who refers to the Southwark and Lambeth Memory Service run by South London and Maudsley.

Our dementia care can fit around all of this, for example by getting someone up and ready on day-centre mornings and spending the rest of the week with them at home.

The 68 goes to King's. King's College Hospital at Denmark Hill is the usual hospital for West Norwood. The 68 bus runs from West Norwood station through Tulse Hill and Herne Hill to the hospital's door, which helps with outpatient appointments. When someone is about to be discharged, ask the ward to contact us early so care can be in place on the day. See our hospital discharge support.

Who pays for home care in West Norwood?

If Lambeth Council is going to contribute, the first step is a needs assessment from Lambeth Adult Social Care: use the online referral or call 020 7926 5555. If the person has eligible needs, a financial assessment of their income and savings sets their contribution. Where needs are mainly health-related, ask the GP or ward about NHS Continuing Healthcare. Anyone can also arrange care privately. We give a quote once we have assessed, not before. Our Lambeth home care page and paying for care guide go into more detail.

A break for the family carer

If you are the one doing the caring, ask Lambeth for a carer's assessment (020 7926 5555), or contact Carers' Hub Lambeth directly on 020 7501 8970. For respite we can provide a short live-in stay while you go away, or extra visits for a few weeks.

West Norwood FAQs

Questions from West Norwood families

Questions families ask us about West Norwood. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum lives in a one-bedroom flat on the York Hill estate. What are her options?

Without a spare bedroom, live-in care is not possible, so the choice is visits if we have a carer free for her times, or a move to somewhere with a second bedroom. SE27 is towards the far end of Lambeth from our office, so call and we will tell you honestly what we can cover before anything is agreed.

Mum's house is on a steep road off Knights Hill. Can a carer still take her out?

Yes, but we plan the route. That might mean a wheelchair for the uphill leg, a bus for one stretch, or going towards the flatter streets by the station. We will talk about it at the assessment.

Dad goes to Central Hill Day Services. Can live-in care work alongside it?

Yes. The live-in carer gets him ready and sees him off, and day-centre days give the carer part of their daily break. We arrange cover for the carer's days off.

Is SE27 all in Lambeth?

West Norwood itself is, but the edges of SE27 and the neighbouring SE19 come close to the Croydon and Southwark boundaries. If you are unsure, check the council tax bill before asking for an assessment.
