Live-in Care in Battersea

A live-in carer for a flat on the Winstanley or York Road estates, a riverside tower, a Prince of Wales Drive mansion block or a house near Northcote Road, planned around lifts, estate parking and Clapham Junction.

Yes, we arrange live-in care anywhere in Battersea. A carer moves into your relative's home, sleeps in a room of their own and provides support through the day, for one person or for a couple. It begins with a free assessment at home by Jackie, our registered manager, or one of her team, followed by a written care plan.

Access first: the lift, the stairwell and the front door

A lot of Battersea lives in blocks with lifts, from the estate towers to the riverside apartments, and that changes how live-in care is planned.

  • Estate towers. On the Winstanley, York Road and Doddington estates, a flat with a working lift is often easier for a wheelchair user than a terraced house. Because a live-in carer is already in the flat, a broken lift is less of a crisis than it is for someone who relies on visits: nobody is stuck outside, and the carer can manage the day indoors until it is fixed. We still plan for it, with medication and food kept in stock.
  • New riverside apartments. Towards the Power Station, flats usually have level access and lifts big enough for equipment. Some are one-bedroom flats or studios, though, and without a second bedroom there is nowhere for a carer to live.
  • Mansion blocks on Prince of Wales Drive. These have lifts, though some are small and old, and long corridors. Check with the managing agent before ordering a hospital bed or hoist.
  • Shaftesbury Park and the Victorian streets. The artisans' cottages are low and compact. Many terraces off Lavender Hill are split into flats with steep stairs. A cottage with two bedrooms can work; an upper flat up two flights is harder.

If a flat has only one bedroom, ask about our visiting care in Battersea, which is more realistic here than in other parts of Wandsworth because Battersea is the easiest part of the borough for us to reach.

Can a live-in carer park on a Battersea estate?

Not with an ordinary visitor permit. On Wandsworth estates covered by a parking order, cars need an estate permit, and the council's estate parking rules state that controlled parking zone permits are not valid on estates, and estate permits are not valid in the zones. Visitors need an estate visitor permit. Ask your housing area team or your tenant management organisation how that works for your block.

Off the estates, Battersea streets fall into the Battersea, Battersea Park and Clapham Junction zones, and the visitor permit has to match your zone. A carer arriving by train avoids the question altogether.

Clapham Junction on changeover day

Carers hand over at the end of each placement: the new carer arrives, the outgoing one goes through the care plan and the week's notes, and then leaves. Because Clapham Junction is the borough's main interchange, a carer travelling from almost anywhere in London can reach it with one change at most, then walk or take a short bus with their luggage. For a flat near the park or the Power Station, Battersea Park, Queenstown Road or the Northern line at Battersea Power Station may be closer to the door. We plan the arrival around your block: which entrance to use, whether the lift needs a fob, and where the outgoing carer can hand over keys.

A break with somewhere to go. A live-in carer has a protected daily break. Battersea Park is the obvious choice, with the riverside and its lakes. Battersea Library, at 265 Lavender Hill, has free Wi-Fi for members and somewhere quiet to sit. While the carer is off, a family member or a short sit-in visit can stay with your relative.

Couples in Battersea

A two-bedroom flat with one bedroom for the couple and one for the carer is a common arrangement. The carer gives full personal care to the partner who needs it and lighter support to the other, cooks for the household and gets both out, whether that is to the Northcote Road shops or a bench in the park. Where both partners need a lot of help, we will tell you whether one carer is enough.

From hospital back to SW11

Most Battersea discharges come from St George's in Tooting, the borough's main acute hospital. The council may offer free short-term reablement from its KITE service first. Live-in care can follow it, or be used straight away if you are paying privately. Call us when a date is first mentioned and we will say honestly whether we can staff it.

For council funding, direct payments and NHS Continuing Healthcare, see our live-in care in Wandsworth page. The London live-in care page covers what the carer does each day.

Battersea live-in care: your questions

Questions families ask us about Battersea. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum has a two-bedroom flat on the York Road estate. Can the carer use the second bedroom?

Usually, yes. If she is a council tenant, it is worth telling the housing team that a carer is living with her. We check the room, the lift and the route in for equipment at the assessment.

Dad's riverside flat near the Power Station only has one bedroom. What are the options?

Live-in care isn't possible without a room for the carer. Visiting care is the usual alternative, and Battersea is one of the easier parts of Wandsworth for our carers to reach, subject to availability at the times he needs.

Our block on Prince of Wales Drive has an old lift. Can we still have a hospital bed?

Often the bed comes in sections and fits. Ask the managing agent for the lift's measurements, and we will raise it with the equipment service when the care plan is set up.

The carer will be coming by car on changeover day. Do we need an estate permit or a CPZ permit?

It depends where the car parks. On estate land you need an estate visitor permit, and on the street you need a visitor permit for your CPZ. Neither one works in the other place.
