Home Care in East Ham, E6

Personal care, dementia support and live-in care in the bay-fronted streets around East Ham High Street, Barking Road and Central Park.

We can arrange home care in East Ham. A carer can come in for set visits, which depends on having someone available at your times because East Ham is 40 to 50 minutes from our Lewisham office, or a live-in carer can move in if there is a spare room. We start with a free assessment in the home and agree a written care plan with your relative and the family.

Care in a house the whole family shares

East Ham is mostly long streets of bay-fronted Victorian and Edwardian terraces, many of them owned and lived in by older people for years, and many shared by more than one generation of a family. That shapes care. The carer fits into a household with its own routines and one bathroom that everybody needs at 7.30 in the morning.

So the care plan spells out who does what: perhaps the family does breakfast and the carer the wash and dress. It also records what matters to your relative about food, prayer, language and modesty, for example who should help with intimate care.

How do we ask Newham for help with care in East Ham?

  1. Contact the Access to Adult Social Care Team on 020 8430 2000, option 2, or use the form on the council's contacting adult social care page. A relative can complete a self-assessment on your relative's behalf.
  2. If your relative is not already getting support, the Access Visiting Team carries out the assessment, which can be at home or by phone.
  3. A family member who does a lot of caring can ask for a separate carer's assessment of their own.
  4. If your relative is eligible, a financial assessment decides what they pay. Care can then be arranged by the council or taken as a direct payment.

Our Newham home care page covers hospital discharge and the borough's other services.

How much does home care cost in East Ham?

For council-funded care, the amount your relative pays is set by Newham's financial assessment, which looks at income and savings. Someone with complex health needs should ask the GP or hospital about NHS Continuing Healthcare, which is free if they qualify. For private care, we give a written quote after the assessment, based on the visits or live-in care agreed.

Dementia support close to the High Street

East Ham has two regular dementia groups within reach of most E6 streets, both listed on the council's dementia page:

  • A memory cafe at East Ham Library, 328 Barking Road, run by Newham New Deal Partnership for the council and free for Newham residents affected by dementia.
  • A singing group and chair-based yoga on Tuesday afternoons at the WELLcome Hub on Vicarage Lane, run by Bonny Downs Community Association. A diagnosis isn't needed, but people with dementia must come with a carer. The council's listing suggests letting the coordinator know before you go, so check it is running that week.

That second point is where we come in. A dementia care visit can include going to the group with your relative, so a family member at work doesn't have to take the afternoon off. Diagnosis itself goes through the GP, who can refer to Newham Memory Services in Plaistow.

Getting to East Ham

East Ham station is on the District and Hammersmith & City lines. Buses from the station include the 101, 147, 238, 300, 304, 325, 376 and 474, and the 147, 304 and 376 all go to Newham University Hospital in Plaistow, which is useful for appointments. The East Ham parking zones run Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm. If your relative has visiting carers and no driveway, ask about Newham's Residential Carer permit.

Live-in care

Where the house has a spare bedroom, a live-in carer can provide care through the day and be there at night, with daily breaks and cover for days off. In a full household that room is not always free, and we will be straightforward about whether live-in care fits.

Respite

When the family member who does most of the caring needs a rest or has to travel, we can step in with extra visits or a short live-in stay. Newham Carers Community, run by Age UK East London, supports carers across the borough. More on respite care.

East Ham FAQs

Common questions about care in East Ham

Questions families ask us about East Ham. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
We all live with Nan. Will the council still help?

Living with family does not rule her out. The assessment looks at her needs and at what the family is willing and able to provide, and a carer's assessment looks at the effect caring has on you. Ask for both.

Can the carer fit around our family's mornings?

Yes, within the times we can staff. Tell us when the bathroom is free and when the house empties for work and school, and we set the visit around it where we can.

Can a carer take Dad to the memory cafe at East Ham Library?

Yes. We can plan a longer visit on cafe days so the carer helps him get ready, goes with him and brings him home.

Mum would prefer a female carer. Can you arrange that?

Tell us at the assessment and we write it into the care plan. We will be honest if it limits the times we can offer.
