Home Care in Stratford, E15 and E20
Visiting care, live-in care and respite for older and disabled people in Stratford, Maryland and East Village, from the terraced streets off Romford Road to the new blocks on Stratford High Street.
Yes, we provide home care in Stratford. It is one of the easiest parts of north-east London for our carers to reach from our Lewisham office, so visiting care here is a realistic option, subject to having a carer free at the times you need. Live-in care is available at any Stratford address with a spare bedroom, and every arrangement starts with a free assessment at home and a written care plan.
Two Stratfords
Most people picture Stratford as Westfield and the Olympic Park. Older residents mostly live in the Victorian terraces and council estates around the old town centre, Maryland and the streets off Romford Road, and on estates such as Carpenters, beside the station, which the council is regenerating. The towers on Stratford High Street and in East Village are newer.
In a terrace, the question is usually the stairs and a small upstairs bathroom: whether a stairlift, a commode or a bed downstairs makes mornings safe. A new-build flat with a lift is often step-free inside, so the risk moves to the building: if the lift is out, a wheelchair user is stuck. We write what happens then into the care plan.
Is Stratford close enough for daily visits from Lewisham?
Yes, more than most of Newham. From Lewisham the DLR to Canary Wharf and the Jubilee line reach Stratford in roughly 35 to 40 minutes, and Stratford has almost every line in the area: Central, Jubilee, Elizabeth line, DLR, the Overground Mildmay line and National Rail, with Stratford International and Maryland close by. That makes regular visits workable. We still confirm we have a carer for your times before we agree to start, and if we cannot cover a package properly we will say so.
Check the match calendar. The Stratford Central zone runs Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm, but on London Stadium and Olympic Park event days the Stratford zones extend to 8am to 9pm. Some southern Stratford zones only apply 10am to 12 noon on weekdays. If your relative has visiting carers and no off-road parking, Newham sells a Residential Carer parking permit that carers can share, valid only in the zone printed on it.
Getting out on The Grove and beyond
Care that only happens indoors misses what Stratford offers. A companionship visit can be shopping at the Stratford Centre, a matinee at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, or a slow lap of the park.
The Grove is also where some of the most useful local help sits. Age UK East London runs its Newham advice office from the Stratford Advice Arcade at 107-109 The Grove. The council's dementia support page lists Music for the Mind, monthly music sessions in the Hopkins Room at Stratford Library, also on The Grove. Newham New Deal Partnership runs them for the council, and they are free for Newham residents affected by dementia. A carer can take your relative there and stay with them.
How much does home care cost in Stratford?
It depends on who pays. If your relative asks Newham for help, the council assesses their needs and then their finances. National Care Act guidance sets an upper capital limit of £23,250: above it, a person usually pays the full cost, and below it the council works out a contribution. Someone whose needs are mainly health needs may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare, which is free. Council funding can be taken as a direct payment and used with an agency you choose. For private care, we give a written quote after the assessment, once we know what the visits involve.
Asking Newham for an assessment
One number covers it: 020 8430 2000, option 2, for the Access to Adult Social Care Team, or the online request on the council's contacting adult social care page. If your son or daughter is known to ELFT's learning disabilities team on Romford Road, mention it, because the council will want their input. Our Newham home care page covers the council process, hospital discharge and carers' support in more detail.
Live-in care in a Stratford flat
A live-in carer needs their own bedroom. In East Village that means a two-bedroom flat; in a terrace, usually the back bedroom. We arrange the carer's daily breaks and cover on days off.
A break for the person who does the caring
Newham Carers Community, the council-commissioned service for unpaid carers, works out of the same Stratford Advice Arcade on The Grove as Age UK East London (020 3954 3143), so it is close by if you care for someone in E15. Ask the council for a carer's assessment, which is how Newham arranges funded breaks. From us, respite care can be extra visits for a week, or a live-in carer while you go away.

Stratford questions
Questions families ask us about Stratford. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionOur address is E20. Is that Newham?
East Village is in Newham, but the E20 postcode runs across the Olympic Park into neighbouring boroughs. The council named on the council tax bill is the one to ask for an assessment. Either way, we can provide care there.
Will West Ham home games affect my mum's carer visits?
They can slow things down around the stadium and the station, and parking restrictions run until 9pm in the Stratford zones on event days. Tell us if visits fall on event days and we will allow extra travel time for them.
My son has a learning disability and lives near Romford Road. Can you support him?
Yes, adults under 65 are within our registration. ELFT's Newham Learning Disabilities Service is based on Romford Road in Stratford and may already know him. We are happy to work alongside them and his social worker on a plan.
Can a carer take Dad to Westfield in his wheelchair?
Yes, if it is in his care plan. We look at the route, the lifts and the time he can manage at the assessment, and build the outing into a longer companionship visit.
