Upton Park Home Care

Care at home around Green Street, Queen's Market and the streets off Plashet Road and the Barking Road, in E13 and E6.

Yes, we arrange home care in Upton Park, from personal care visits to a live-in carer. We are based in Lewisham, about 40 to 50 minutes away, so a live-in carer is the simplest arrangement and visits depend on whether we have a carer free at your times. It always starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan.

Life around Green Street

Green Street and Queen's Market, by Upton Park station, are among the best-known South Asian shopping streets in London, and for many older residents the weekly trip to the market or the high street is the main outing. Care that only happens indoors loses that. A companionship visit can be an escorted walk down Green Street, help with the shopping bags, and time for a chat on the way home. A carer with a wheelchair or rollator can make the trip possible again for someone who has stopped going on their own.

We will ask about food, faith and family routines at the assessment and write them into the care plan: how someone likes meals prepared, prayer times, who visits and when. We cannot promise a carer who speaks a particular language, so tell us what matters most and we will be honest about what we can match.

Converted terraces and new flats on the old ground

Most homes here are Victorian terraces, and many have been split into an upstairs and a downstairs flat. Someone in the upper flat has a whole flight of stairs between their front door and the street, and no lift. Someone in a whole house usually has a bathroom upstairs. The other housing type is newer: the Boleyn Ground, West Ham United's stadium until 2016, has been redeveloped as housing, and those flats have lifts and level access. The plan for a ground-floor flat in a new block looks very different from the plan for a top-floor conversion, which is why we visit before quoting.

Can a carer park in Upton Park?

The Boleyn and Upton Park parking zones run Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm, so a carer who drives needs a permit. Newham sells a Residential Carer parking permit for residents with no off-road parking who receive care at home; it can move between carers' cars but only works in the zone printed on it. Many carers come by public transport instead: the District and Hammersmith & City lines stop at Upton Park, and buses 58, 104, 330 and 376 stop by the station.

Can the council pay an agency we choose in Upton Park?

Yes, through a direct payment. First Newham Council has to assess the person's needs: call the Access to Adult Social Care Team on 020 8430 2000, option 2, or use the online form on the council's contact page. If they are eligible, a financial assessment follows, and the council says people with more than £23,250 in savings may pay in full. At support planning you can ask for the council's share as a direct payment and use it to pay an agency such as ours; the Direct Payments Team runs a monthly drop-in at The Resource Centre on Chargeable Lane, Plaistow. We give a written quote after our own assessment. More on the borough routes is on our Newham home care page.

GP and hospital. Plashet Road Medical Centre (152 Plashet Road, E13 0QT) is among the nearest surgeries. Newham University Hospital on Glen Road in Plaistow is the local hospital, and our hospital discharge support can pick up when someone comes home from there.

When visits are not enough

For someone who needs help at night as well as in the day, a live-in carer moves in. They need their own bedroom, which can be hard to find in a converted flat but is more common in a whole terraced house. One carer can support a couple.

Time off for the family

Where a son, daughter or daughter-in-law is doing most of the caring, respite care covers them for an afternoon a week or for a trip abroad. The council's carer's assessment is the route to council-arranged breaks.

Upton Park FAQs

Upton Park questions

Questions families ask us about Upton Park. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Can a carer take my mother to Queen's Market?

Yes. Shopping trips can be part of a companionship or home help visit. We agree the route, how she will get there and back, and how long the visit needs to be.

Dad lives in the top flat of a converted house. Can he still have care at home?

Usually, yes. The stairs affect how he gets out, so we look at whether a council occupational therapy assessment for grab rails or other equipment would help, and plan visits so he is not left needing to go out alone.

We get a direct payment from Newham. Can we use it with you?

Yes. Direct payments can pay a care agency of the person's choice. We will assess, quote and agree the visits within the hours your support plan covers.

Is the address E13 or E6, and does it matter?

Upton Park spans both. Either way it is Newham Council, so the assessment route, direct payments and the carer parking permit work the same way. Only the parking zone name changes.
