Home Care in Enfield Town, EN1 and EN2
Care at home for people living around the Market Place, Church Street, Silver Street, Gentleman's Row and the roads running up towards Chase Farm Hospital.
Yes, we provide home care in Enfield Town. Our office is in Lewisham, a journey of well over an hour, so here we mostly arrange live-in care, and we take on regular visits only when a carer who lives nearby is free to cover them. Every arrangement starts with a free home assessment by Jackie, our registered manager, followed by a written care plan.
An old market town with stairs to match
Enfield Town has been a market town since Edward I granted a charter for a weekly market in 1303, and the Market Place still sits beside St Andrew's Church and the old grammar school building. The New River winds through the centre, past Gentleman's Row, where some of the houses date from the 16th to the 18th centuries.
For care, the housing matters more than the history. Close to the centre you find Victorian and Edwardian terraces with narrow halls and the bathroom upstairs. Further from the centre, interwar semis take over. The town centre also has flats and some sheltered blocks. Each one calls for a different plan:
- Terraced houses: stairs are usually the first problem. We look at whether a bed can come downstairs, whether a stairlift fits and whether the bathroom can be adapted.
- Interwar semis: there is often a third bedroom, which makes live-in care possible.
- Sheltered flats: visiting care suits them well. Let the scheme manager know that carers will be coming in.
Chase Farm is up the road, but it has no A&E
Chase Farm Hospital on The Ridgeway is the nearest hospital to most of EN2. Its A&E closed in December 2013. It now runs an urgent treatment centre and planned surgery, so after an emergency admission your relative is likely to come home from North Middlesex University Hospital in Edmonton or from Barnet Hospital. All three are run by the Royal Free London, which also runs Enfield's district nursing. If someone needs care to be in place before they can leave a ward, tell the ward staff early that you are arranging it privately, and call us so we can assess. See our hospital discharge support page for what that involves.
The W8 and W9 buses both terminate at Chase Farm, and the 313 stops at the main entrance on its way to Potters Bar. That helps a carer taking someone to an outpatient appointment or to the Enfield Memory Service. The Memory Service is based at the Warwick Centre on the same site, and a GP referral is the way in.
The carers' centre is in EN1. Enfield Carers Centre is at Britannia House, 137-143 Baker Street, a short walk from the town centre. It holds drop-ins on Monday afternoons and Wednesday late mornings, and it carries out carers' assessments for Enfield Council. If you are the one doing the caring, start there.
Will Enfield Council pay for home care in Enfield Town?
It might. The first step is a needs assessment from Enfield Adult Social Care. Phone the Single Point of Access on 020 8379 1001 (Monday to Friday) or use the online referral that gov.uk's Enfield needs-assessment page links to. If eligible needs are found, a financial assessment decides how much the person pays towards their care. Enfield pays direct payments onto a prepaid E-Card, and the money can be used to buy care from an agency like ours. Where someone's needs are mainly health needs, ask the GP or the hospital whether NHS Continuing Healthcare should be considered. We quote after our assessment. Our Enfield home care page covers the borough-wide route, and paying for care explains the means test.
Live-in care near the town centre
A live-in carer needs a bedroom of their own, and plenty of Enfield Town semis have one. One carer can look after a couple, with full personal care for one partner and lighter help for the other.
Respite for family carers
Enfield Carers Centre is close enough to drop in: the 191 and W8 both stop on Baker Street. Its carers' assessment can lead to funded breaks. If you are due to have planned surgery at Chase Farm yourself, that is a fixed date we can plan respite care around, with a live-in carer arriving before you go in.

Enfield Town questions
Questions families ask us about Enfield Town. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionDad was taken to Chase Farm's urgent treatment centre and then sent elsewhere. Where will he be discharged from?
From whichever hospital admitted him, usually North Middlesex or Barnet. Chase Farm has no A&E, so serious cases are moved on. The discharge process is the same at both, and we can assess him at home once a date is in sight.
Mum has just been referred to the Memory Service at Chase Farm. Can a carer go with her?
Yes, if it is written into her care plan. A live-in carer can take her to appointments at the Warwick Centre and help her remember what was said afterwards. Our dementia care page explains how we support people after a diagnosis.
He lives in a sheltered flat off the town centre. Does that change anything?
Visiting care tends to fit sheltered housing well, as long as we have a carer available locally, so ask us about his postcode. Live-in care is only possible if the flat has a spare bedroom, and many do not.
I care for my wife and live off Baker Street. Who should I talk to first?
Enfield Carers Centre, which is almost on your doorstep. Its carers' assessment looks at your own needs, including breaks, and can check whether you qualify for a carers' direct payment.
