Live-in Care in Enfield Town
For people around the Market Place, Church Street and the roads up towards The Ridgeway who want a carer living in the spare room, whether for a few weeks after an operation or for the long term.
Yes, we provide live-in care in Enfield Town, in EN1 and EN2. A trained carer moves into the home, has their own bedroom and supports one person or a couple day to day, following a written care plan agreed after Jackie's free assessment visit. The carer lives in, so the journey from our Lewisham office only matters on the day they arrive.
Having a hip or knee done at Chase Farm? Book the carer before the operation
Chase Farm Hospital on The Ridgeway is the Royal Free London's site for planned surgery, and hip and knee replacements are among the operations done there. For someone living in Enfield Town that means the operation is close to home, and the date is known weeks ahead. The hospital will ask how the person will manage at home before they are admitted, and the stay after a joint replacement can be short, so help needs to be lined up before the operation.
Short-term live-in care fits that situation well. The usual order is:
- As soon as you have a date, call us. Jackie visits before the operation, sees the stairs, the bathroom and the bed, and writes the plan with you while the person can still walk her round the house.
- Before admission, the carer's room is made ready and any equipment the hospital recommends, such as a raised toilet seat or a perching stool, is in place.
- On the day of discharge, the carer is already living in, so there is help with washing, dressing, exercises and meals from the first evening.
We cannot promise a start date until we have assessed, but a planned operation gives us the best chance of matching a carer in time.
Chase Farm is not an A&E. The site has an urgent treatment centre, open 8am to 10pm with last check-in at 9pm. A live-in carer will call 999 for a serious emergency, and an ambulance from Enfield Town will normally go to North Middlesex or Barnet Hospital.
Which Enfield Town homes have room for a live-in carer?
Housing around the centre comes in three broad types, and they work differently for live-in care.
The interwar semis on the edges of EN1 and EN2 usually have three bedrooms, which gives a carer a proper room. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces nearer the Market Place often have a small third bedroom over the hall. It can work if a single bed, a chest of drawers and somewhere to hang clothes fit, and the door closes. The town-centre flats and sheltered blocks are the hardest: many have one bedroom, and a carer cannot live in a flat without a room of their own. Visiting care is the alternative there, and our home care in Enfield Town page explains when we can offer it.
In a terrace with the only bathroom upstairs, think about where the person will sleep in the first weeks after surgery. A bed brought down to the front room, with a commode, is often safer than the stairs, and the carer still needs their own room upstairs.
Changeover day: trains and parking
Live-in carers usually change over by train. Enfield Town is the end of the Overground Weaver line from Liverpool Street, and National Rail lists the station as step-free to all platforms, with a ticket office open every day of the week, which helps a carer arriving with a suitcase. Enfield Chase and Gordon Hill, on Great Northern trains from Moorgate, serve the western side of EN2.
Streets around the town centre and the station may be in a controlled parking zone, so check the signs in your street for the zone and its hours. A carer who arrives by car, or a relative bringing them, will need to park legally. Enfield sells books of visitor vouchers to residents of a CPZ, so if the person's address is in one, buy some before the first changeover.
A carer's break around the Market Place
A live-in carer needs a daily break, and Enfield Town makes that easy to fill. Town Park, with the New River Loop running beside it, is a short walk from the centre. Enfield Town Library on Church Street is one of the nine libraries the council kept open after the 2025 closures, now open until 8pm on Wednesdays, and is a quiet place to sit for an hour.
Outings with the person are part of the carer's working day. The market still trades on the Market Place, St Andrew's Church is on the same square, and a slow walk along Gentleman's Row beside the New River is mostly flat.
Paying for live-in care in Enfield Town
Enfield Council's needs assessment and means test apply here as across the borough; the gov.uk page for Enfield links to the referral form, and our Enfield live-in care page covers the rest, including direct payments. A partner who has been doing the caring can ask Enfield Carers Centre on Baker Street for a carers' assessment of their own. If the main need after an operation or illness is a health need, ask the ward or GP about NHS Continuing Healthcare. We give a written quote after the free assessment. Enfield Town live-in care: your questions
Questions families ask us about Enfield Town. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum's knee replacement at Chase Farm is booked for next month. Is that enough notice?
Call us now and we will tell you honestly. A month gives time for the assessment and for us to look for a carer, but we only confirm once we have matched someone. If the date moves, tell us straight away.
If Dad falls in the night, will the carer take him to Chase Farm?
Not for anything serious. Chase Farm has no A&E and its urgent treatment centre closes at 10pm. The carer will call 999 or NHS 111, as the situation needs, and stay with him.
Can live-in care be just for the six weeks after surgery?
Yes. We can arrange live-in care for a recovery period. We agree a likely length at the assessment and can extend or end it as recovery goes.
Our street is in a controlled parking zone. Does the live-in carer need a permit?
Not if they come by train. If someone drives them in, they can use one of your visitor vouchers in a residents' bay during controlled hours.
