Home Care and Live-in Care in Southgate, N14
Care at home around Southgate Circus, Chase Side and the High Street, Southgate Green and Cannon Hill, and the 1930s roads that run out towards Grovelands Park and Arnos Grove.
Yes, we provide care in Southgate, and from Lewisham the arrangement we can offer most reliably here is live-in care: a carer who moves into the house and stays. Southgate is more than an hour from our Lewisham office, so regular visits depend on whether a carer is available for your times. Call us and we will tell you honestly what we can cover after a free home assessment.
Houses built for the Piccadilly line
Southgate grew almost overnight once the Piccadilly line arrived in 1933. Charles Holden's round station at Southgate Circus is now Grade II* listed. The old Walker, Osidge and Monkfrith estates were sold off and covered with large semi-detached houses, and the area was nearly full by 1939. Many of the people who bought then, and their successors, have lived in the same house for decades.
A three-bedroom 1930s semi is close to ideal for live-in care. There is a spare room for the carer, a garden, and usually a downstairs room that can become a bedroom if the stairs get too much. The common difficulty is the bathroom, which is almost always upstairs with a bath and no walk-in shower. If getting in and out of the bath has become difficult, raise it at the assessment so the care plan covers it while the council looks at adaptations. Around the Circus there are also 1930s flats and maisonettes, and in those, the stairs to the front door matter as much as the stairs inside.
How do carers reach Southgate?
By the Piccadilly line, which serves Southgate and Arnos Grove stations. A carer coming from south-east London changes onto it in central London, and the journey usually takes 65 to 80 minutes. Southgate station is also a bus hub: the 121, 125, 298, 299, 382, W6 and W9 all stop there. The distance is why we suggest live-in care first. Once the carer lives in, the journey no longer matters.
Places worth going. Southgate Green, at the foot of Cannon Hill, is a conservation area of listed houses with Ye Olde Cherry Tree overlooking it. Grovelands Park, 92 acres of parkland and lake, is a short walk east. The Minchenden Oak Garden, beside Christ Church on Waterfall Road, is smaller and quieter. A carer who takes someone out to any of these, at their own pace, is providing companionship care.
How much does home care cost in Southgate?
We don't publish prices. We quote in writing after assessing what is needed. How much of that cost you pay depends on Enfield Council's means test, if you go through the council. For care in your own home, the value of the house you live in is not counted. The NHS explains this on its self-funding page. Savings, investments and income are counted.
To start the council route, contact Enfield Adult Social Care's Single Point of Access on 020 8379 1001, or apply online through gov.uk. If someone's needs are primarily health needs, ask the GP or hospital about NHS Continuing Healthcare. Our Enfield home care page covers the council process in more detail.
Barnet Hospital, North Middlesex or Chase Farm?
It depends on the address. The western side of N14 is closer to Barnet Hospital. The eastern side is closer to North Middlesex in Edmonton, which the W6 reaches directly from Southgate station. Chase Farm, at the top of the W9 route, has an urgent treatment centre but no A&E. Chase Farm is also home to the Enfield Memory Service, where GPs refer people over 65 who have memory problems. All three hospitals are run by the Royal Free London trust. If someone is coming home needing help, our discharge support can be arranged while they are still on the ward.

Southgate questions
Questions families ask us about Southgate. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionOur address is N14. Is that always Enfield Council?
Not always. Some N14 addresses, on the Osidge side, are in the London Borough of Barnet. Check who you pay council tax to, because that council handles the needs assessment and any funding. Our care is the same either way.
Will Mum have to sell the house to pay for care at home?
No. The home a person lives in is not counted in the means test for care at home. It can be counted if they move into a care home, which is one reason families here look at live-in care first.
Both my parents need help. Do we need two live-in carers?
Usually not. One live-in carer can support a couple, giving personal care to one and lighter help to the other. If both need two-person help to move, for example with a hoist, we will say so at the assessment and plan for it.
Dad is becoming forgetful. Where does Southgate get a memory assessment?
Through his GP, who can refer him to the Enfield Memory Service at the Warwick Centre, Chase Farm Hospital. The W9 bus runs there from Southgate station. A carer can go with him to the appointment if it is part of the care plan.
