Home Care in Fulham, SW6
Carers for washing, dressing, medication and company at home in SW6, from North End Road and Fulham Broadway down to Bishop's Park and the river.
Yes, we provide home care in Fulham, both visiting care and live-in care. South and east Fulham are among the easier parts of the borough for us to reach from Lewisham, by the District line to Fulham Broadway or the Overground to Imperial Wharf, but visits still depend on carer availability, so ask us about your street. Care starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan.
Is home care in Fulham free?
Care arranged by Hammersmith & Fulham Council is. The council stopped charging for home care in 2015, and its home care page covers help with washing, dressing, laundry, shopping and housework. To get it, someone needs a Care Act assessment and has to meet the eligibility criteria: call Adult Social Care on 0800 145 6095 or see the council's assessments and paying for care page.
Private care is not free. We quote in writing after our assessment and don't give prices over the phone. An agency like ours can cover what the council package leaves out, such as longer visits, fewer changes of carer, or care for someone not yet eligible. Where a person's needs are mainly medical, ask the hospital team or GP about NHS Continuing Healthcare. The full council route is on our Hammersmith and Fulham page.
Upstairs flats and steep stairs
Most of Fulham is long, straight streets of two-storey Victorian terraces off Munster Road, Dawes Road, Lillie Road and Wandsworth Bridge Road. A great many are now split into an upper and a lower flat. For someone getting frail, the upper flat is the hard one. There's a steep private staircase straight up from the front door, and usually a small bathroom with a bath and no shower.
Ask for an occupational therapy assessment as part of the council assessment, because a bath board, a second stair rail or a level-access shower can make care at home safe again. Ground-floor flats and whole houses are simpler, and a whole house usually has the spare room that live-in care needs. The Clem Attlee Estate and the other council blocks around North End Road have their own access questions, mainly lifts and entry doors, which a key safe usually solves.
Cameras, permits and match days
Fulham is the part of the borough where driving to a client needs planning:
- Visitor parking. Every street is in a controlled zone. The resident books the carer in on RingGo with a virtual visitor permit.
- Clean Air Neighbourhood cameras. Many streets either side of Wandsworth Bridge Road are in the South Fulham Clean Air Neighbourhood. A carer's car has to be booked in too, or the carer risks a fine.
- Football. Craven Cottage and Stamford Bridge both sit in SW6, so plan around home fixtures. Visits near Fulham Broadway or Bishop's Park can run late on match days.
Carers on public transport have more choice: the District line's Wimbledon branch stops at West Brompton, Fulham Broadway, Parsons Green and Putney Bridge, and the Overground Mildmay line runs through West Brompton and Imperial Wharf.
Chelsea and Westminster or Charing Cross?
It depends where in Fulham you live. People in the south and east, nearer Fulham Broadway, tend to go to Chelsea and Westminster on the Fulham Road. People in the north and west usually go to Charing Cross on Fulham Palace Road. Tell us which one when you call, and call early, while the ward is still planning discharge. See hospital discharge support.
For evening and weekend GP appointments, the council lists Cassidy Medical Centre at 651a Fulham Road as one of the borough's three extended-hours hubs. You book through your own practice or by calling 111.
Two Fulham charities worth knowing. Bishop Creighton House runs Keep Active, on Lillie Road, where volunteers visit weekly for up to nine weeks to help people aged 60 and over rebuild mobility after a fall or illness, on referral from NHS community rehab. Fulham Good Neighbours offers befriending for people who are housebound, escorts, small DIY jobs, gardening and social clubs at Rosaline Hall. Phone each one to check what is running now.
A live-in carer, or a week off for you
Where the house has a spare bedroom, a live-in carer can provide care around the clock, and one carer can support a couple. Family carers are entitled to a carer's assessment from Adult Social Care. Carers Network (020 8960 3033) gives free advice and support to unpaid carers across the borough. For a break, a live-in carer can step in for a week or two: see respite care.

Fulham FAQs
Questions families ask us about Fulham. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum lives in an upper flat off Munster Road and can't manage the bath any more. What should we do first?
Ask the council for an assessment and mention the bath specifically, so an occupational therapist looks at it. In the meantime a carer can help her wash safely without the bath, and we can talk through what equipment would help when we visit.
Will a carer driving to Sands End get a camera fine?
Not if the visit is booked. Inside the South Fulham Clean Air Neighbourhood the resident adds the carer's car through RingGo using their visitor permit, and that booking lets the car through the cameras.
Do you cover Parsons Green, Sands End and the streets around North End Road?
Yes, all of SW6, including Parsons Green, Sands End, Walham Green, Hurlingham, Fulham Broadway and the streets either side of North End Road.
Dad has been sent home from Chelsea and Westminster with a reablement package. Can you take over when it ends?
Very possibly. Call us a week or so before the reablement period ends, so there is time for our assessment and to find a carer for his visit times.
Is it worth asking for a direct payment if council care is free anyway?
It can be. A direct payment lets you choose the provider and arrange visits at the times that suit the person, which some families prefer. Ask about it when the council agrees ongoing care.
