Live-in Care in Fulham
One carer living in an SW6 terrace, supporting one person or a husband and wife together, from the streets off Munster Road to the houses near Bishop's Park.
Yes, we arrange live-in care across Fulham, SW6. A carer lives in the home, has a bedroom of their own and gives day-to-day support, and one carer can look after a couple. Before anything is agreed, Jackie, our registered manager, visits for a free assessment, and the arrangement is written into a care plan.
Live-in care for a couple in SW6
Where one partner in a Fulham house needs much more help than the other, a live-in carer can give full personal care to one, while helping the other with meals, shopping, appointments and a hand on the stairs. The care plan sets out who gets what, so the stronger partner can stop being the main carer without either of them moving. If both of you need a lot of help, including at night, we'll say at the assessment whether one carer is enough.
A couple in a whole terrace usually has the room for this. A couple in a one-bedroom flat does not, and there the choice is visiting care, covered on our home care in Fulham page.
Arranging a terrace around a carer
The standard Fulham house is two storeys with the bathroom upstairs and a narrow staircase. When stairs become unsafe, families tend to make one of three changes, and each affects where the carer sleeps:
- Bed downstairs in the front room. The carer takes a bedroom upstairs. Washing needs a plan, such as a commode and strip washes, or a downstairs shower if there's room in the back addition.
- A stairlift. The person keeps their own bedroom and the carer has the spare room. Straight Victorian stairs often suit a stairlift; a winding top flight may not.
- A hospital bed and hoist upstairs. Possible in the larger houses around Parsons Green and Hurlingham. Check the bedroom has space to turn a hoist before it is delivered.
Ask Adult Social Care for an occupational therapist to look at the house. We'll go through the same rooms at our assessment.
How do carers get to and from Fulham?
TfL lists Fulham Broadway, West Brompton and Imperial Wharf as step-free, which helps a carer arriving with luggage on changeover day. Fulham Broadway is on the District line; West Brompton and Imperial Wharf are on the Overground, a straight run up from Clapham Junction. For a carer coming from our side of London, those three stations are the easy ones.
A carer who drives needs more planning:
- Book them in through RingGo as your visitor.
- If the carer lives outside H&F, the same RingGo booking also lets their car through the South Fulham Clean Air Neighbourhood cameras. Without it, the camera points on the side streets off Wandsworth Bridge Road issue fines.
- On Craven Cottage event days, extra parking restrictions apply in zones T, X and Y around Bishop's Park. Avoid changeovers on those afternoons.
A couple's daily break. When the carer takes their own time off, the partner who manages better is often happy to sit with the other for an hour. We write that into the plan only if you both want it, and never as a condition of the arrangement.
Where the carer, and the two of you, can go
Bishop's Park by Putney Bridge has a café, toilets, a rose garden and the river walk, and it runs straight into the grounds of Fulham Palace, where the museum is free and there is a walled garden and a café. South Park on Peterborough Road is quieter, with a wildlife garden and pond. For the carer's own hour, Fulham Library at 598 Fulham Road, near Parsons Green, has a lift and is open every day of the week.
For the person being cared for, the North End Road market, a café on the New King's Road or Bishop Creighton House's older people's services on Lillie Road can all stay part of the week with a carer alongside.
How much does live-in care cost in Fulham?
We don't quote a figure until we've met you, because a couple, a single person and someone needing help at night all cost differently. You get the figure in writing after the assessment. For public funding, start with Hammersmith & Fulham Adult Social Care on 0800 145 6095; council-arranged home care in this borough is free after an assessment, and you can ask how that applies to live-in care. NHS Continuing Healthcare may pay in full where needs are mainly medical. Our Hammersmith and Fulham live-in care page sets out each route, and live-in care in London covers the service itself.

Fulham live-in care: your questions
Questions families ask us about Fulham. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum has dementia and Dad is frail but managing. Can one live-in carer really look after both?
Often, yes. Mum's care is planned in full, and Dad's help is written in alongside it, from meals to appointments. If Mum is awake and needing help through the night, we'll tell you honestly that one carer isn't enough and talk through the options.
Our only spare room is the box room. Is that big enough?
It needs to take a proper single bed and somewhere for the carer to keep their clothes, with a door that closes. We'll look at it with you on the assessment visit.
We live inside the Clean Air Neighbourhood. Will the relief carer get a fine if they drive?
Not if you book their car in through RingGo before they arrive. Tell us which carer is driving and their registration, and we'll remind you before each changeover.
Dad was treated at Chelsea and Westminster. Can live-in care start on the day he leaves?
We'll try to fit the start to the ward's plan, but we confirm a date only once a carer is matched. Call us as soon as discharge is mentioned, and see our hospital discharge page.
Could the carer take my parents to the Fulham Palace garden?
Yes, as an outing in the care plan, if they are well enough. The palace grounds, Bishop's Park and the river walk are all close together, with a café for a rest.
