Home Care in Herne Hill, SE24

Visiting care and live-in care on the Lambeth side of Herne Hill: Railton Road, Dulwich Road, Norwood Road and the streets along Brockwell Park.

JNP Sidona provides home care in Herne Hill, with visiting carers where we have someone free at your times, and live-in carers anywhere in SE24. We are not based in Lambeth, but there is a direct bus to Herne Hill from Lewisham, where our office is. As with everyone, we start with a free assessment at home and agree a written care plan.

Which side of Herne Hill are you on?

Herne Hill is split between two councils, and the split decides who assesses you. Everything on the Brockwell Park side, including Railton Road, Dulwich Road and the roads off Norwood Road, is in Lambeth. The eastern side, including Half Moon Lane, Burbage Road and the velodrome, is in Southwark. Both share the SE24 postcode, so check the council tax bill.

For a Lambeth address, request a needs assessment from Lambeth Adult Social Care through the gov.uk link to the council or on 020 7926 5555 (Adults, option 1 for someone with no care yet). Our Lambeth home care page sets out the funding and discharge side. For the Southwark half, see our Southwark home care page.

How long does it take a carer to reach Herne Hill?

The P4 bus runs from Lewisham station through Ladywell, Honor Oak, Dulwich Village and North Dulwich to Herne Hill, then on to Brixton. By train it means at least one change, and either way the journey takes about 35 to 50 minutes. Herne Hill station on Railton Road has Southeastern services to Victoria and Thameslink through the City, so it is a convenient stop for carers coming from other directions too. That makes regular visits workable here more often than in Streatham or Norwood. But they still depend on availability, and we will not promise times we cannot cover.

Upstairs in a late-Victorian terrace

Most of Lambeth's side of Herne Hill is late-Victorian terraced streets, and a lot of those houses are now two flats. If the person lives in the upper flat, everything starts at the bottom of a long, narrow staircase. Before a hospital discharge, the occupational therapist will want to know whether they can manage those stairs. Bathing is often the first thing that becomes difficult, because these bathrooms are small and usually have a bath where a level shower would be easier. A carer can help with a strip wash or with using a bath board safely, and Lambeth's AskSARA guide shows the equipment that might help.

The ground-floor flat or the whole house is a different situation. If there is a second bedroom, a live-in carer is possible, and for someone who needs help several times a day it is often simpler than a long run of visits.

Brockwell Park is right there. The park has a walled garden, a café in Brockwell Hall at the top of the hill and the Lido beside Dulwich Road. For someone who is housebound most of the week, half an hour in the park with a carer can be the best part of it. That is what our companionship visits are for.

Hospital is about a mile away

King's College Hospital at Denmark Hill is about a mile from Herne Hill station and is the nearest A&E, so many local admissions and discharges go through it. The 68 bus runs from Herne Hill to the hospital. When a discharge date is set, call us early so a carer can be there for the first evening home. Our hospital discharge page explains what we do.

Respite and help for carers

Carers' Hub Lambeth, at 336 Brixton Road in Brixton, supports unpaid carers and accepts self-referrals on 020 7501 8970. Lambeth Council also offers a carer's assessment, whatever your income. For respite care we can provide extra visits or a short live-in stay.

Questions families ask us about Herne Hill. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum lives on Half Moon Lane. Is this the right page?

Half Moon Lane is on the Southwark side of Herne Hill, so her assessment and any council funding would come from Southwark Council. We can still provide her care. Our Southwark page explains that council's route.

Dad is in the top flat of a converted house on Railton Road and can't manage the stairs since his fall. What now?

Ask the hospital or GP for an occupational therapy assessment first. Sometimes the answer is equipment and support on the stairs, and sometimes it is planning for a move. Meanwhile we can bring care to him, so that he does not have to go up and down for meals, shopping or prescriptions.

Can a carer take my mother swimming at Brockwell Lido?

If she is well enough and it is part of her care plan, a carer can go with her, help her change and stay close by. Tell us what she used to enjoy and we will see how to fit it in.

Is Herne Hill close enough for you to do short daily visits?

It is one of the more reachable parts of Lambeth for us, with the P4 bus from Lewisham. Whether we can cover your times depends on which carers are free, so call and we will tell you honestly.
