Home Care in Vauxhall

Care at home for older and disabled people in Vauxhall and South Lambeth, from the riverside blocks by Vauxhall Cross to Fentiman Road, Vauxhall Park and Courland Grove.

JNP Sidona can arrange home care in Vauxhall: visits for personal care, medication and meals, or a carer who lives in. We are based in Lewisham, and Vauxhall is one of the parts of Lambeth that is easiest to reach by public transport, so visits are realistic here, although we still need a carer free at your times before we agree to them. We start with a free home assessment.

Check the council first

Vauxhall straddles two postcodes (SE11 and SW8) and sits right on a borough boundary. Vauxhall Cross, the bus station, Vauxhall Park and the streets of South Lambeth are in Lambeth. The new towers further west along Nine Elms Lane, towards Battersea Power Station, are mostly in Wandsworth. The postcode will not settle the question, so check the council tax bill before you ask anyone for an assessment.

For a Lambeth address, contact Adult Social Care through the council's referral page or on 020 7926 5555. The council's Connected Lambeth eligibility checker gives you an early idea of whether the council is likely to help. Our Lambeth home care page explains the whole route. For a Wandsworth address, Wandsworth Council handles it.

Flats, mostly, and what that means for care

Most homes in Vauxhall are flats, and the flats differ a great deal:

  • New-build blocks by the river usually have lifts and level access, and often level-access bathrooms. For someone who uses a wheelchair or needs a hoist, that makes care at home much easier.
  • Council estates such as the Vauxhall Gardens Estate are older and plainer. Where a flat is reached by lift, the person's independence can depend on that lift working. Lambeth's carer parking permit does not cover estate parking.
  • Victorian terraces on streets like Fentiman Road and Heyford Avenue are often divided into upper-floor flats, which means stairs and small bathrooms.

Arriving by bus, Tube or train

Vauxhall has the Victoria line, South Western Railway trains and a major bus station at Vauxhall Cross. Two routes come straight from Lewisham: the 436 through New Cross, Peckham, Camberwell and the Oval, and the 185 through Catford, Dulwich, King's College Hospital and the Oval. That is why visits work here when parking does not. There is almost nowhere for a carer to leave a car.

Coming home from St Thomas'. St Thomas' Hospital is about a mile downriver and is the main acute hospital for Vauxhall, so many local discharges come from there. If someone is ready to leave but nobody is at home to help, call us while they are still on the ward. Our hospital discharge support page explains how we can help them settle back in.

Communities and day centres nearby

South Lambeth Road is the centre of one of London's long-established Portuguese communities, and older Vietnamese residents have a centre of their own: the Lambeth Elderly Association from Vietnam runs a day centre on Courland Grove, SW8, and it is one of the centres on the council's day care list. As with the others, a place is arranged after a needs assessment. Visiting care fits around day-centre days: help to get ready in the morning, and a check in the evening.

Can I get live-in care in a one-bedroom flat in Vauxhall?

Usually not. A live-in carer needs their own bedroom to sleep and take breaks in. In a one-bedroom flat the alternative is a package of visits, sometimes with a sit-in in the evening. In a two-bedroom flat live-in care works well, including for couples. If a family carer needs a pause, respite care can cover a week or two. Carers' Hub Lambeth (020 7501 8970) supports carers whether or not they have had a carer's assessment.

Vauxhall FAQs

Vauxhall FAQs

Questions families ask us about Vauxhall. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
My father has just moved into a new riverside flat. Will it suit a hoist?

Very likely, because new blocks are built with lifts and level access. At the assessment we check the space round the bed and in the bathroom, and the occupational therapist can arrange the equipment. Moving and handling with a hoist sometimes needs two carers, and we will tell you plainly whether we can staff that.

Is an address on Wandsworth Road or Nine Elms Lane in Lambeth?

It depends on the exact address, because the boundary runs through this area. Check the council tax bill. We cover both sides, but the assessment and any council funding come from whichever council the person lives in.

Mum goes to the Vietnamese day centre on Courland Grove. Can a carer help her get ready on those days?

Yes, if we have a carer free at the right time. The morning visit covers washing, dressing, breakfast and medication. We can also agree a later call for when she gets home.

How do your carers get to Vauxhall from Lewisham?

The 436 and 185 buses run from Lewisham to Vauxhall bus station, and the train and Tube are an option too. Because carers do not need to park, visits are more practical in Vauxhall than in much of south Lambeth.
