Home Care in Brixton, from Acre Lane to Loughborough Junction
Visiting carers, live-in care and respite for older and disabled people in SW2 and SW9, from the Brixton Hill terraces to Angell Town and the Loughborough Estate.
Yes, we provide home care in Brixton. Carers visit to help with washing, dressing, meals, medication and getting out, and live-in care is available where there is a spare room. Our office is in Lewisham, not Lambeth, so visiting times depend on which carers we have for Brixton; we will tell you honestly what we can cover after a free assessment at home.
Two support services within walking distance of the station
Brixton is where Lambeth keeps a lot of its help for older people and carers. Age UK Lambeth is at 10 Acre Lane, a short walk from the Tube, and runs practical services such as help with housework and errands, small home repairs and foot care. Carers' Hub Lambeth is on the fourth floor of 336 Brixton Road, and family carers can use it without first having a council carer's assessment. The town hall is on the corner of Acre Lane and Brixton Hill.
Our visits can fit around help someone already gets from Age UK or a day centre.
Estates, split terraces and new blocks
Brixton's housing comes in three broad kinds, and each changes the care plan.
- The big estates. Loughborough Estate and Angell Town are post-war estates where many older residents have lived for decades. Upper-floor flats depend on the lift, so tell us if it is often out of service.
- Victorian terraces divided into flats. Around Brixton Hill, Coldharbour Lane and the streets off Railton Road, many older people live on an upper floor with a steep, narrow staircase and no lift. That makes hoists and stairlifts hard to fit, and bathing often has to be planned around a small bathroom.
- Newer flats near the town centre. These usually have lifts and level access, which make wheelchairs and moving equipment easier to use.
Brixton's older generation. Brixton has been the heart of London's Caribbean community since the Windrush era, and many people who need care here now came to London in those years. Food, church, music and how someone likes to be addressed all belong in the care plan. The companionship side of a visit can include a trip to the market or to church.
How carers get to Brixton
Brixton is the southern end of the Victoria line, and the Tube station on Brixton Road has lifts from street to platform. Brixton rail station, about 100 metres away, has Southeastern trains, and Loughborough Junction has Thameslink. From our office on Lewisham High Street the journey is roughly 35 to 50 minutes by train or bus.
Driving is harder. The town centre sits in a tight controlled parking zone, and several low traffic neighbourhoods close through-routes. Lambeth sells a personal carer's parking permit for a carer visiting a resident in a CPZ. It needs a declaration from a GP or social services, allows up to three hours in that zone only, and is not valid on housing estates. With the Tube this close, public transport is usually the simpler way in.
How do I get a council care assessment in Brixton?
Brixton is in Lambeth, so the request goes to Lambeth Council's Adult Social Care. Use the council's referral page or phone 020 7926 5555 and choose "Adults". Option 1 is for someone with no current service; Option 2 is for someone already supported. Ask the person's permission first if you can, and have their name, address and date of birth ready. A GP or hospital can refer too.
The assessment decides whether the council will arrange or fund care, and a financial assessment decides what the person pays. If you pay privately, we give you a written quote after our own assessment. Our Lambeth home care page covers direct payments and the borough as a whole.
Coming home from King's
King's College Hospital at Denmark Hill, just over the border in Southwark, is the nearest A&E for Brixton, so many local hospital stays end there. If someone is coming home and will need help, tell the ward early that you are arranging care, and call us as soon as a discharge date is talked about. Our hospital discharge support page explains how the first visits work.
Live-in care and respite in Brixton
Because live-in carers move in, the distance from Lewisham makes no difference. The practical question is space: the carer needs their own bedroom, which is easier in a house on the Brixton Hill side roads than in a one-bedroom estate flat. See live-in care for how it works.
For a husband, wife or son doing most of the caring, respite care can be a regular afternoon off or cover for a week away. Carers' Hub Lambeth can also advise on breaks and benefits.

Brixton questions
Questions families ask us about Brixton. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionIs SW2 Brixton or Streatham Hill?
SW2 covers Brixton, Brixton Hill, Tulse Hill and Streatham Hill. All of it is in Lambeth, so the same council and the same assessment route apply. We cover the whole postcode.
Dad lives on the third floor of a converted house with no lift. Can he still have care at home?
Often, yes. We look at the stairs, the bathroom and whether he can get out safely. A council occupational therapist can assess for rails, a shower seat or other equipment. Where the stairs make leaving the flat unsafe, we will say so and talk through the options.
Can a carer take Mum to Brixton Market or to church?
Yes. Accompanied outings are part of companionship care. We plan the visit length around the trip at the assessment.
Does Age UK Lambeth do the same as you?
No. Age UK Lambeth offers practical help such as housework, errands and small repairs, plus dementia support. We provide regulated personal care, such as washing, dressing and medication support. Someone can use both.
