Stockwell Home Care: Carers Visiting SW9 and SW8

Help at home for older and disabled people on the Stockwell Park and Lansdowne Green estates, along South Lambeth Road and Clapham Road, and in the Stockwell Park Crescent streets.

Yes, we provide home care in Stockwell. Carers visit to help with getting up, washing, dressing, meals and medication, and live-in care is available where there is a spare bedroom. Stockwell is on two Tube lines, which makes it one of the easier parts of Lambeth for us to reach from Lewisham, but visiting times still depend on carer availability. We begin with a free assessment at home.

Where Stockwell is, and why it matters for visits

Stockwell sits between Brixton, Vauxhall and Clapham, around the station where the Victoria and Northern lines meet. From our office on Lewisham High Street, carers can travel via London Bridge and the Northern line, or change onto the Victoria line, which keeps journeys predictable. The local landmarks are the war memorial at the Clapham Road junction, outside the station, and the Stockwell Bus Garage, whose concrete arched roof was Europe's largest unsupported roof span when it opened in 1952; it has been Grade II* listed since 1988.

Parking is the hard part. Controlled parking zones cover the whole area. Lambeth's personal carer's parking permit allows a visiting carer up to three hours in a resident's zone, but it is not valid on housing estates, which rules it out for much of Stockwell.

Living on the Stockwell estates

Many Stockwell homes are on post-war estates such as Stockwell Park and Lansdowne Green. For an older person in an upper-floor flat, care depends on three things:

  • The lift. When it breaks down, someone with poor mobility can be stuck indoors. Tell us how reliable it is, and whether there is a second lift or a ground-floor route.
  • The bathroom. Some estate flats still have a bath, not a shower. A council occupational therapist can assess for a bath lift or a level-access shower, and we plan washing around whatever is in place.
  • Getting out. Someone who stops going out can become isolated quickly. Part of a visit can be a walk to the shops on South Lambeth Road or to a lunch club.

The streets around Stockwell Park Crescent are different: a conservation area of Victorian villas and terraces, often split into flats with stairs and no lift.

Communities with their own centres. South Lambeth Road is the centre of Stockwell's long-established Portuguese community, and the Lambeth Chinese Community Association runs a day centre on Stockwell Road that appears on the council's day care list, open after a needs assessment. If someone's first language is not English, tell us at the assessment. We will be honest about whether we can match a carer who speaks it.

Mental health support and Lambeth Hospital

South London and Maudsley's Lambeth Hospital is on Landor Road in Stockwell. It provides mental health inpatient care, not A&E, and SLaM has said it is closing in 2026 with wards and services moving to other sites, so check where a service is now before you go. Community mental health care in Lambeth comes through the Living Well Network Alliance. Our carers do not provide clinical mental health treatment, but we can support daily routines, meals and medication prompts alongside the person's mental health team.

For physical illness, St Thomas' Hospital is the main acute hospital for much of Stockwell, and King's College Hospital serves the Brixton side. Our hospital discharge page explains how care can start after a hospital stay.

How do I arrange council-funded home care in Stockwell?

Ask Lambeth Council for a needs assessment. Use the online referral form, or phone 020 7926 5555, choose "Adults", then Option 1 if the person has no current support or Option 2 if they do. The council looks at needs first, then at income and savings to decide any contribution. You can ask for the money as a direct payment and choose your own provider, including us. If you pay privately, we give a written quote after our assessment. The Lambeth home care page has more on the borough.

Live-in care and respite

Live-in care needs a second bedroom, which is easier in a Stockwell Park Crescent house than in a one-bedroom estate flat. Where there is room, a live-in carer can support one person or a couple. For family carers, respite care can cover a regular break or a holiday, and Carers' Hub Lambeth on Brixton Road offers carers advice and support.

Stockwell FAQs

Questions families ask us about Stockwell. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Is Stockwell SW9 or SW8?

Both. The Brixton side is SW9, and the streets towards Vauxhall and South Lambeth are SW8. All of Stockwell is in Lambeth, and we cover both postcodes.

Dad's mental health team was based at Lambeth Hospital. Does its closure change his care at home?

His home care does not depend on the building. South London and Maudsley says the Landor Road hospital is closing in 2026 with its wards and services moving to new sites, so ask his care coordinator where his team and any appointments are now. We can include that in his care plan, along with any changes to his medication routine.

My brother has been discharged from a mental health ward. Can you help at home?

Often, yes, with practical support such as meals, routines and medication prompts. His care coordinator stays responsible for his mental health treatment, and we work alongside them with his agreement.

Can carers park on the estate?

The council's carer's parking permit does not cover housing estates, and estate parking has its own rules. Public transport is usually the practical way in.
