Live-in Care in Canning Town

A carer living in the second bedroom of an E16 estate flat or new-build, so someone can stay put through the regeneration with help living in.

Yes, we arrange live-in care in Canning Town. After a free assessment at the flat, usually with Jackie, our registered manager, we write a care plan and match a trained carer who moves in, takes the spare bedroom and supports one person or a couple through the day, with a protected break and a proper night's sleep. If the flat has no spare room, we will say so and talk about other options.

Will a live-in carer fit in a Canning Town flat?

It comes down to one room: the carer needs a bedroom of their own with a bed, a door that shuts and space for their clothes. Most Canning Town homes are one of two kinds:

  • Older council flats in the post-war estates. A two-bedroom flat where a widowed parent now lives alone often has exactly the room a carer needs. A one-bedroom flat does not.
  • New-build flats put up as the estates are rebuilt. The second bedroom is sometimes small, so we measure it before matching anyone.

With only one bedroom, the realistic choices are regular visits, which are easier to staff here than anywhere else in Newham (see home care in Canning Town), or a move to one of Newham's extra care housing schemes, which the council allocates after a Care Act assessment.

In a block with lifts, a wheelchair, hoist or hospital bed can reach the flat, and a live-in carer is there for every transfer, so nobody waits for a visit to get out of bed. Before the carer moves in, we check three things:

  • A spare key or fob for the carer, who is now a member of the household.
  • Whether there is a second lift, and the housing office or managing agent's number for when a lift is out of service.
  • Where the hoist, commode and wheelchair will live. In a compact new-build, that can decide which room becomes the bedroom.

Some hoist transfers are assessed as needing two people, which one live-in carer cannot do alone. If that applies, we will tell you.

Changeover day at the Canning Town interchange

When one live-in carer hands over to the next, both are at the flat together. Canning Town makes that journey easy: the station brings the Jubilee line and the DLR together beside the bus station, and TfL lists it as having lift access, which matters to a carer arriving with a suitcase. From our Lewisham office it is about 25 to 30 minutes by the DLR and the Jubilee line.

If the incoming carer drives, look up the zone first. The Canning Town zone runs Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm, while Canning Town North runs only weekdays from 10am to 2pm, according to the council's list of parking zones. For a driven changeover, buy a Newham visitor parking permit on MiPermit. Register for visitor access first; permits are virtual and can be booked up to seven days ahead.

Moving flat during the regeneration? If the council is rehousing the person, tell us the date early. The carer can help with the move, and we reassess the new flat, including the carer's room, before the first night there.

The carer's daily break, close to home

Every live-in carer has protected time off each day, written into the care plan. In Canning Town there are a few easy places to spend it:

  • Canning Town Library at 18 Rathbone Market, open Monday to Saturday.
  • Keir Hardie Recreation Ground on Tarling Road, listed among the council's local parks.
  • A DLR ride south to the Royal Victoria Dock waterside, or a Jubilee line ride to Stratford.

If the person cannot be left, family can cover the break, or it can fall during a regular session. The council-commissioned memory cafe meets at the same Rathbone Market address as the library.

From a hospital bed to a flat in E16

Canning Town residents are usually admitted to Newham University Hospital on Glen Road in Plaistow, or the Royal London in Whitechapel after a serious injury. Anyone who will need support at home can be referred by the ward to Newham's Integrated Discharge Hub. A live-in carer can meet the hospital transport, see the person up to the flat and stay through the first nights, when many people feel least steady. Tell the ward early that you are arranging live-in care, and we will be honest about when we can start.

Paying for it

We give a written quote after the free assessment. Newham Council's needs and financial assessments, direct payments and NHS Continuing Healthcare are covered on our Newham live-in care page, and live-in care across London explains how the service works.

Live-in care in Canning Town: your questions

Questions families ask us about Canning Town. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum's council tenancy is in her name. Does the housing office need to approve a live-in carer?

Check the tenancy agreement and tell the housing officer that a carer will be living in, especially if the carer needs their own fob. The carer does not pay rent and is there only to provide care. We are happy to confirm the arrangement in writing for the landlord.

Can a visiting carer cover the live-in carer's break in Canning Town?

Often, yes. Canning Town is close enough to Lewisham that a short sit-in visit is realistic, subject to a carer being free at that time. We plan it at the assessment, alongside any family cover.

Dad's flat is in the Canning Town North parking zone. Does the changeover carer need a permit?

Only if they park during the controlled hours, which in Canning Town North are weekdays from 10am to 2pm. A handover outside those hours, or by train, needs no permit at all.

My sister usually looks after Dad but needs an operation. Can a live-in carer cover for a few weeks?

Yes. A short live-in placement is a form of respite care. Your sister can also ask Newham for a carer's assessment, which is the route to council-arranged breaks; Newham Carers Community can help her with that.
