Home Care and Live-in Care in Coulsdon

Care at home in Coulsdon town centre, Old Coulsdon, the Cane Hill development and the hillside estates between Farthing Downs and Coulsdon Common, CR5.

We can arrange care at home in Coulsdon, and in practice that usually means live-in care. Coulsdon is Croydon's southernmost town and well over an hour from our Lewisham office by public transport, so a carer who lives in the home is far more dependable than a rota of visits. It starts with a free assessment at the house and a written care plan.

Is visiting home care available in Coulsdon?

Sometimes. Visiting care means a carer travelling to you for each call, often several times a day, and from south-east London the journey to CR5 is long. Whether we can cover visits depends on having a carer available who can reach you reliably at the times you need. Ring us with the address and the times, and we will tell you honestly.

Live-in care works differently. The carer moves in, so travel happens once at the start and once at handover. That is why it is the service we lead with this far south.

From Old Coulsdon to Cane Hill

Coulsdon is more a cluster of places than one. The town centre runs along the Brighton Road, which has been quieter since the Farthing Way bypass took the A23 around it in 2006. Up the hill to the south-east, Old Coulsdon has its own green, a small parade of shops and the Grade I listed church of St John the Evangelist. To the west, the grounds of the old Cane Hill psychiatric hospital, demolished by 2010, have been redeveloped as a new neighbourhood of houses and flats.

In between are the estates that give Coulsdon its feel: the Clockhouse estate on The Mount, the Coulsdon Woods estate that Wates began building in 1967, and road after road of detached and semi-detached family homes on the slopes. Farthing Downs and Coulsdon Common, looked after by the City of London, and Croydon Council's Happy Valley park wrap around the edge of the town.

Room for a carer. A live-in carer needs their own bedroom, and Coulsdon's family houses nearly always have one. The newer flats at Cane Hill and around the town centre vary, so check whether there is a genuinely spare room before you plan around live-in care.

How much does home care cost in Coulsdon?

We do not publish prices, because the cost depends on the care involved, and we quote after the free assessment. What we can tell you is how the public funding works. Coulsdon is in the London Borough of Croydon, so the council carries out the needs assessment and then a financial assessment. Croydon Council's paying for care pages state that if you have savings or assets over £23,250 you pay the full cost of your care. Where someone's needs are mainly health needs, they may qualify for NHS continuing healthcare, which the NHS funds in full. A council-funded package can be taken as a direct payment and used to pay a provider such as us; our Croydon home care page covers that route.

Getting to hospital and the shops

Croydon University Hospital in Thornton Heath is where Coulsdon residents are admitted and discharged, and it is a long way north. The 60 bus is the useful one: it starts in Old Coulsdon, calls at Coulsdon South and Coulsdon Town stations, and runs through Purley and West Croydon to the hospital door. The 404 links Old Coulsdon with the town centre and both stations, and the 405 and 466 run north to Purley and central Croydon. By rail, Coulsdon South is on the Brighton main line and Coulsdon Town is on the Tattenham Corner branch.

For carers driving in, the Coulsdon Town Centre and Coulsdon Resident Only permit zones cover the centre; many residential roads on the hills are uncontrolled.

Questions from Coulsdon families

Questions families ask us about Coulsdon. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad is coming home from Croydon University Hospital to Old Coulsdon. Can a live-in carer be there when he arrives?

That is the aim, and the earlier you call the better. Let us know the expected discharge date, and we will arrange the assessment and the carer's start around it. See our hospital discharge page.

Mum has bought a flat on the Cane Hill development. Will live-in care work there?

Only if the flat has a second bedroom the carer can use. If it does, a new-build with level floors and a modern bathroom can be easier to care in than an older house.

Can a carer take Mum out on Farthing Downs?

If it is safe for her, yes. Outings are part of companionship and are written into the care plan. The Downs are steep and uneven in places, so we would agree a route that suits her mobility.

We live near Coulsdon South station. Does that make visiting care more likely?

It helps a carer travelling by train, but it does not guarantee cover. Call us with the times you need and we will tell you straight away whether we can staff them.

Both my parents need help. Do we need two live-in carers?

Usually not. One live-in carer can support a couple, provided the total care fits within their working hours and breaks. If both need two-person care, such as hoisting, we will talk through other options at the assessment.
