Live-in Care in Beddington
One carer living in the house, a week that still includes the park and the church, and a plan that works whichever side of the Croydon border the ambulance went.
Yes, we provide live-in care anywhere in Beddington, on SM6 and CR0 addresses alike. A carer moves in, has their own bedroom, and helps with personal care, meals, medication, the house and getting out, with a relief carer arranged for their time off. Jackie, our registered manager, starts with a free assessment at the house and writes the care plan with you.
What does a week of live-in care in Beddington look like?
Every care plan is different, but a week for someone living with early dementia or frailty in Beddington might run something like this:
- Every morning: help to wash and dress, breakfast, and medication from the blister pack, with each dose recorded.
- Most afternoons: a slow walk into Beddington Park, past St Mary's church and Carew Manor to the lake, with a wheelchair if the distance is too far on foot.
- Once a week: shopping in Wallington, by bus or with the carer pushing the wheelchair.
- Sunday: a service at St Mary's, if church has always been part of the week.
- Every day: the carer's own protected break, covered by a family member, a neighbour or a group, as agreed in the care plan.
The point of live-in care is that this routine belongs to your relative. The carer fits into it.
A room for the carer
Beddington's homes are mostly low-rise: interwar semis and terraces, older houses near the park, and some council-built housing. A semi usually has a box room or third bedroom, which is enough if it takes a single bed and somewhere to keep clothes. Older houses near the park often have larger rooms but steeper stairs.
Council-built homes need more checking. Some flats have no spare room at all, which rules out a live-in carer; our home care in Beddington page covers visiting care instead. In a council-built house or a flat with a second bedroom, live-in care can work well. For tenants, any adaptations such as rails, a level-access shower or a stairlift go through the landlord and the council's occupational therapy service, so it helps to start that before the carer arrives.
Couples in Beddington. One live-in carer can look after a husband and wife together, so that one partner's needs don't force the other to cope alone or move. In a three-bedroom semi there is usually room for the carer as well. We write each person's care into its own section of the plan.
After a stay at Croydon University Hospital or St Helier
Beddington is close enough to the Croydon border that an emergency admission may go to Croydon University Hospital, run by Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, as well as to St Helier Hospital in Carshalton. For live-in care, the practical points are these:
- We aim for the carer to start on the day of discharge, but that depends on availability and on how much notice we get, so call us while your relative is still on the ward.
- Follow-up outpatient appointments may stay at the discharging hospital. A live-in carer can go with your relative to Croydon or Carshalton and bring notes back for the family.
- Community nurses and therapists after discharge come from Sutton Health and Care, because the home is in Sutton, and the carer works alongside them.
For more on how we prepare for discharge, see our hospital discharge page.
Getting the carer here, and home again
Beddington has no main-line station. A carer arriving for a changeover usually comes to Wallington or Hackbridge on Southern, or to Waddon on the Croydon side. If the bags are heavy, Hackbridge is the better choice: National Rail lists lifts there, while Wallington has no lifts. Trams on the Wimbledon line stop at Beddington Lane on the northern edge, and the 410, 463 and S4 buses stop in Beddington, the 463 and S4 at Beddington Village.
Driving is simpler. None of Sutton's Controlled Parking Zones covers Beddington, so a relief carer or a family member coming to cover the carer's break can usually park in the street without a permit. Close to Wallington or Hackbridge station, check the address on the council's parking checker first, as both have permit parking areas nearby.
Funding
Apply to the council that sends the council tax bill, which for Beddington addresses is Sutton, even where the postcode is CR0. Sutton Adult Social Care's route, direct payments and NHS Continuing Healthcare are set out on our live-in care in Sutton page, and live-in care in London explains the service. We give a written quote after the free assessment, never over the phone.

Beddington live-in care: your questions
Questions families ask us about Beddington. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum is being discharged from Croydon University Hospital to her home in Beddington. Can a live-in carer meet her there?
Yes, if the dates allow. Tell the ward you are arranging a live-in carer, and call us as soon as a discharge date is likely, so the carer can be in the house, or travel home with her, on the day.
Dad lives in a council flat with one bedroom. Can he have live-in care?
Not with a carer living there, because the carer needs a bedroom. Visiting care is the realistic option in a one-bedroom flat, or a move to a home with a spare room. We will go through both honestly at the assessment.
Can the carer keep up Gran's walks in Beddington Park?
Yes. We plan the route and the distance at the assessment, including whether she needs a wheelchair for the way back, and write it into the care plan so relief carers keep it going too.
Who sits with my husband while the live-in carer takes a break?
That is agreed before the placement starts. It might be you, another relative, a neighbour, a sitting visit, or a group such as those run by Age UK Sutton's Dementia Hub. If no one is available, we plan the cover with you.
