Live-in Care in Carshalton
A carer who lives in your Carshalton home and is already there on the day someone is brought back from St Helier, the borough's main hospital at the north end of SM5.
Yes, we arrange live-in care throughout Carshalton, from the cottages by the ponds and the Wrythe to the semis of Carshalton Beeches. One carer moves into the home, has a bedroom of their own, and helps day to day with washing and dressing, meals, tablets, the house and company. Jackie, our registered manager, starts with a free assessment at home, and the care plan is agreed in writing before the carer arrives.
A carer in the house for the first weeks after St Helier
For most people in SM5, an emergency admission means St Helier Hospital on Wrythe Lane, and that is also where they come home from. Short visits leave the hours between them uncovered. A live-in carer is in the house through the day and sleeps there at night, so there is someone to help to the toilet, notice that a meal has been left, and ring the GP or 111 when something changes.
If the ward refers the person to Sutton's free START reablement service, live-in care can sit alongside it. Reablement is about relearning everyday tasks, and the carer can keep those same habits going between the team's visits instead of doing everything for the person.
To give us the best chance of fitting the discharge date, ring while the person is still on the ward. Tell us what equipment the hospital is ordering, such as a hospital bed, a commode or a frame, and which room it is going into.
Where will the carer sleep in a Carshalton house?
The carer needs a private bedroom with a proper bed. How easy that is depends on which part of Carshalton you live in.
- Cottages near the ponds and the High Street. Often two bedrooms and a tight staircase. After a hospital stay the person may need to sleep downstairs for a while, which can leave the upstairs bedroom free for the carer. The carer is then on a different floor at night, so we agree at the assessment how they will be called if needed, for example with a simple monitor.
- Interwar semis towards Carshalton Beeches. The front box room is the usual carer's room. Before the first carer arrives, check it takes a single bed and a chest of drawers with the door shut, because some are narrower than they look.
- Flats and council-built homes around the Wrythe. A two-bedroom flat can work, especially with a lift for a wheelchair or a delivered bed. A one-bedroom flat cannot take a live-in carer, because a sofa in the living room is not a bedroom. There, visiting care in Carshalton is the option to ask about.
Changeover day: trains, lifts and permit hours
Carers rotate, so a new carer arrives with a suitcase and the outgoing one leaves after a handover. Carshalton station has both Southern and Thameslink trains, and National Rail lists it as fully step-free, with lifts to both platforms. Carshalton Beeches has Southern services.
Most Carshalton streets have no parking controls, but a few areas are Permit Parking Areas. The council lists CS1 (Carshalton), which operates Monday to Friday from 11am to 1pm, and CA1 (Wallace Crescent area), which runs weekdays from 8am to 6.30pm, except Carshalton Park Road, where it applies from 9am to 11am only. A household inside a PPA gets 50 free visitor hours a year, and more can be bought in books of 100 hours. If a carer will drive to a changeover, timing it outside the permit hours avoids using vouchers at all.
The carer's daily break, by the ponds
A live-in carer must have a proper break every day, away from caring. In Carshalton there is plenty close at hand for that:
- Grove Park, on the north and east sides of the Lower Pond, has a café and toilets, with an accessible toilet by the café.
- Honeywood Museum, the borough's local museum, at the western end of the ponds.
- Carshalton Park on Ruskin Road, a large park in the conservation area, a few minutes from the High Street.
While the carer is off, someone may need to stay with the person. That might be a relative, a short sitting visit, or simply a rest if it is safe to leave them. We settle this in the care plan.
Both of you at home again. When one of a couple is in St Helier, the other is often at home coping alone. A single live-in carer can support both once the first partner is discharged, with full care for one and a lighter hand for the other.
Who pays for live-in care after a stay in St Helier?
It depends on the needs and on money. If the needs are mainly medical, ask the ward whether an NHS Continuing Healthcare checklist should be done before discharge. Continuing Healthcare is funded by the NHS whatever your savings. Otherwise Sutton Council can assess care needs, and its guidance says people with more than £23,250 in savings usually pay in full. Council funding can be taken as a direct payment towards a provider you choose. Our live-in care in Sutton page sets out the council route, and the London live-in care page explains how the service works. We quote in writing after the free assessment.

Carshalton live-in care questions
Questions families ask us about Carshalton. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum may be sent home from St Helier this week. Is that too soon for live-in care?
Call us now. We can't promise a carer by a particular date, but we can talk to you straight away, find out what the ward is planning and tell you honestly what we can arrange. If there would be a gap, ask the ward about a START reablement referral to cover it.
Mum's two-bedroom flat near the Wrythe has no lift. Can live-in care still work there?
Usually, if she can manage the communal stairs with help or rarely needs to go out. The questions are practical: whether a delivered bed or wheelchair can get up the stairwell, and how she would get out to appointments at St Helier. We look at the stairs and the route out at the assessment.
Our street near Carshalton station is in a permit area. Where does a carer with a car park?
Check your PPA's hours with the council's parking checker. CS1 only operates for two hours on weekdays, so outside those hours there is no restriction. Inside them, your household's free visitor hours cover a carer's car.
Will the live-in carer work with the district nurses?
Yes. Community nursing in the borough comes from Sutton Health and Care. The nurses keep their clinical tasks, and the carer handles personal care and daily routine, follows their advice and tells them when something changes.
Can the carer push Mum round the ponds in her wheelchair?
If it's in her care plan and safe for her, yes. Grove Park has a café with an accessible toilet beside it, which makes a short trip out much easier.
