Live-in Care in Belmont, Sutton
A carer who lives with your relative in their SM2 home, through treatment weeks at the Royal Marsden, the quieter weeks between, and the nights in the middle.
Yes, we arrange live-in care for any address in Belmont. A trained carer moves into the house with a bedroom of their own and helps with washing, dressing, meals, medication and getting to appointments, and a relief carer takes over when they have time off. Jackie, our registered manager, visits first for a free assessment, then writes the care plan with you.
Why live-in care suits a household living with cancer treatment
In Belmont, a specialist cancer hospital sits among the houses. The Royal Marsden on Downs Road and the Malvern Centre on Cotswold Road are a short walk or bus ride from most Belmont streets, so the hard part of treatment is rarely the journey. It is everything around it: the day after chemotherapy, the nights when sickness or pain wake someone at 3am, the partner who has stopped sleeping properly.
A carer who lives in can take much of that on. They walk with your relative to Downs Road and wait with them, keep a written note of temperatures, symptoms and medicines for the clinical team to see, cook food that can actually be eaten that week, and are in the house overnight. The Marsden team, nurses and Sutton Health and Care stay in charge of treatment and clinical tasks; the carer works to their instructions. If the aim later becomes comfort, our palliative care page explains how a live-in carer works alongside a palliative team.
Finding the carer's room in a Belmont house
Most of Belmont is Edwardian and interwar semis and detached houses with gardens, and these usually have a bedroom the carer can use. Two things decide whether it works: the room needs a proper single bed and somewhere to hang clothes, and the bathroom arrangement has to work for both people. Where the person who needs care can no longer manage stairs, we often plan around a bed in the downstairs front room, with the carer sleeping upstairs and a monitor or pendant alarm between them.
There are also flats, including newer homes built on former hospital land. A two-bedroom flat can work well. A one-bedroom flat cannot house a live-in carer, and in that case we would talk through visiting care on our home care in Belmont page, or a stay with family while treatment is at its heaviest.
When both of you need help. Sometimes the person having treatment is also the one who used to look after a partner with dementia or poor mobility. One live-in carer can support both, with a separate section of the care plan for each person, so neither has to move out while treatment goes on. The carer's room then needs to be a third bedroom, or the couple share a room.
How does a carer get to Belmont on changeover day?
Belmont station is on Southern's branch line from Sutton to Epsom Downs, so most carers change at Sutton for the one stop south. National Rail lists Belmont as step-free to all platforms, with the platforms level with the main entrance and no lifts needed, which matters to someone arriving with two weeks' luggage. Buses also run up Brighton Road from Sutton town centre. The outgoing carer stays until the new one has arrived, read the notes and gone through the day with them.
Parking needs checking early. Belmont has its own Controlled Parking Zone around the hospital sites. If the house is inside it, a relief carer who drives needs a visitor voucher: every household in a Sutton CPZ gets 50 free visitor hours a year, and the council moved its permit applications online in October 2026. For a household with several carers or a regular visitor, Sutton's Resident Care Permit can be used by different vehicles. Check the address on the council's parking checker before the first changeover.
Where the carer takes their daily break
The carer has a protected break every day, and we agree in advance who sits with your relative during it. Belmont has more open space within reach than people expect:
- Banstead Downs, just to the south, a large stretch of chalk downland for a proper walk.
- Belmont Park on Brighton Road, a small green space that the council lists as a site of local importance for nature, for ten minutes outside.
- The shops by Belmont station, on Station Road and Brighton Road, for a coffee or errands.
- Sutton Central Library, one stop up the line in the town centre, for somewhere warm and quiet to sit.
On a better day your relative can come too, even if it is only to the end of the road and back.
Who pays for live-in care when the main need is cancer?
It depends on whether the needs are mainly health needs. If someone is approaching the end of life, ask the Marsden or community team about the fast-track route to NHS Continuing Healthcare, which in Sutton runs through NHS South West London Integrated Care Board. Otherwise, the council route goes through Sutton Adult Social Care, with a means test; our live-in care in Sutton page covers it, and live-in care in London explains how the service works day to day. For private care, we quote in writing after the free assessment.

Belmont live-in care: your questions
Questions families ask us about Belmont. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionCan the live-in carer go into Marsden appointments with Mum?
They can go with her and wait, and come into the room if she wants them there and the clinic agrees. If she would like the carer to take notes, the family then has a written record of what was said.
Dad's treatment makes him unwell at night. Is one live-in carer enough?
A live-in carer needs proper sleep. Being woken occasionally is manageable, but if he needs help several times every night, we will say so at the assessment and plan night support alongside the live-in carer.
Our road is in the Belmont CPZ. Where does the relief carer park on changeover day?
In a permit or shared-use bay in your zone, using one of your household's visitor vouchers for the hours they are there. If you have several carers coming and going, a Resident Care Permit from Sutton Council may be simpler.
Can live-in care start the day Dad comes home from St Helier after surgery?
That is the aim, but we can't promise a date before we have checked availability. Call while he is still on the ward, and tell the discharge team you are arranging a live-in carer, so the dates can be lined up.
