Live-in Care in Sands End
A carer living in with you by the river in SW6, in a two-bedroom flat at Imperial Wharf or Chelsea Creek, an estate home off Townmead Road or a terrace near Wandsworth Bridge Road.
We can provide live-in care in Sands End wherever the home has a second bedroom for the carer. The carer moves in, supports one person or a couple through the day and evening, takes a daily break that we plan with you, and hands over to a colleague at agreed changeovers. Jackie, our registered manager, starts with a free assessment at home and writes the care plan with you.
Which Sands End homes can take a live-in carer?
Sands End was gasworks and wharves until late last century, and the homes built since vary a great deal. Here's how each kind usually works out for live-in care:
- Riverside apartments at Imperial Wharf and Chelsea Creek. Lifts, wide doors and level floors suit a wheelchair, a hoist or a profiling bed better than almost anywhere in Fulham. The only real question is the bedroom count: a two-bedroom flat works; a one-bedroom flat doesn't, however well designed.
- Council estate flats. A flat with two or more bedrooms is enough. Ask whether the lift is reliable and whether the block has a step at the entrance, because equipment deliveries and a wheelchair both depend on it. If you're a council or housing association tenant, let your landlord know a carer will be staying.
- Victorian terraces off Wandsworth Bridge Road. Whole houses usually have a spare room. Flats carved out of them often don't, and the stairs inside are steep and narrow.
Where there's no spare room, visiting care in Sands End is the usual alternative, and you can ask Hammersmith & Fulham's assessment whether a move to a larger home is realistic.
Getting the carer in: Overground, cameras and concierge
For changeovers, Imperial Wharf station is the useful one. It's on the Overground's Mildmay line between Clapham Junction and Shepherd's Bush, so a carer coming from south London changes once at Clapham Junction, and the riverside blocks are a short walk from the platform.
Driving takes more preparation. Sands End lies inside the South Fulham Clean Air Neighbourhood, made permanent east of Wandsworth Bridge Road in December 2021 and west of it in March 2024. Cameras on residential streets fine cars that aren't booked in. The resident's visitor permit, booked on RingGo, does two jobs at once: it lets the carer's car through the cameras and pays for a bay in the controlled parking zone. Car parks under the new developments are run by the building management, not the council, so ask them separately about visitor spaces.
In a block with a concierge, give the desk the names of both carers before each changeover, and arrange a fob or key for the incoming carer so they aren't waiting in the lobby.
Equipment and lifts. If a hospital bed or hoist is being delivered, tell the building management the date and check the delivery route and the lift size. It's far easier to sort out before the person comes home than with an ambulance crew waiting.
Back from Chelsea and Westminster to a riverside flat
Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on Fulham Road, a short drive away, is the nearest A&E for Sands End. Live-in care fits this kind of discharge well. A flat with a lift means someone using a wheelchair or frame can come straight home without being carried upstairs, and a carer who is already there covers the evenings and nights that visits leave empty. Phone us when a discharge date is first mentioned, so we can assess at home and have the carer's room ready. Once the NHS community rehab team has finished, it can refer someone aged 60 or over to Bishop Creighton House's Keep Active volunteers, who visit weekly for up to nine weeks, and a live-in carer can keep those exercises going between visits.
A daily break by the Thames
The carer's protected break each day is easy to spend well here. Imperial Park and the Thames Path run along the river below the Imperial Wharf blocks. To the north, South Park has a wildlife garden, a rose garden and toilets, and the Sands End Arts & Community Centre stands inside the park. The shops of Wandsworth Bridge Road and Fulham Broadway are a bus ride away. While the carer is out, someone else should be with the person if they can't be left alone; we'll plan that cover with you before the placement begins.
Paying for live-in care in Sands End
Ask Hammersmith & Fulham Adult Social Care for a Care Act assessment first, on freephone 0800 145 6095. The council doesn't charge for home care it arranges, and a long-term need may bring a personal budget you can take as a direct payment. Whether that funds live-in care is the council's decision. For mainly health needs, NHS Continuing Healthcare may pay in full. Our borough live-in care page covers both routes, and live-in care across London explains how a placement runs. Our own price comes in writing after the free assessment.

Sands End live-in care questions
Questions families ask us about Sands End. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionOur flat at Chelsea Creek has a second bedroom we use as a study. Is that enough?
Yes, once it has a proper bed, space for clothes and a door that closes. Clear it before the carer's first day; a sofa bed in a study that's still in use doesn't work for someone living in.
Will the carer get fined driving to Mum's street on changeover day?
Only if nobody books them in. Your mother, or you on her behalf, books a RingGo visitor session for the carer's car before they set off. That covers the Clean Air Neighbourhood cameras and the parking bay.
Can a carer from south London reach Imperial Wharf easily?
Usually, yes: Imperial Wharf is on the Overground from Clapham Junction, which is one of the simpler journeys into Fulham. That matters for changeovers, when one carer arrives as the other leaves.
Dad is on an estate near Townmead Road and the lift often breaks. Is live-in care still possible?
It can be, but we'll look hard at it. If he can't manage the stairs, a broken lift can leave him housebound and complicate getting him to appointments. Report lift faults to the landlord, and we'll plan the care around the realistic worst case.
