Live-in Care in Gants Hill

For husbands and wives in the IG2 semis who want to stay together at home: one carer living in, a room of their own, and a plan written around two people.

Yes, we provide live-in care in Gants Hill. A carer comes to live in the house, supports your relative, or both parents, day and night, and takes planned breaks that we cover. Distance from our Lewisham office does not matter, because the carer travels once and then stays. The first step is a free visit to assess the house and both of you, then a care plan in writing.

Two people, one carer

The streets around the roundabout are mostly interwar semis and terraces, built as family homes, and many have three bedrooms. Where a husband and wife still live in one of them together and one partner starts to need a lot of help, the other often does the caring until it becomes too much. Live-in care takes that weight off without splitting them up.

The care plan covers each of them separately. Typically that means full personal care, medication and help at night for one, and for the other whatever they need and want: cooking, the heavier housework, a hand on the stairs, company at the GP. If the healthier partner wants to keep doing some of the caring, the plan says so. That way each of them gets to be a husband or wife again, not only a patient or a carer. We review the split whenever either person's needs change.

Which bedroom, and on which floor?

In an interwar semi there are usually three bedrooms upstairs. For a couple, one is theirs, one becomes the carer's, and the third, often the box room, is spare or used for equipment. The harder question is the stairs. If one partner can no longer climb them safely, there are three common answers:

  • a stairlift, if the staircase is straight and wide enough;
  • moving one partner's bed downstairs into the front room, while the other stays upstairs, with the carer's room chosen so they can hear both;
  • both moving downstairs, if there is a ground-floor toilet or space for a commode.

For equipment, the council's occupational therapists can assess the house; the referral goes through Redbridge Adult Social Services. We check at the assessment that the carer can reach either partner quickly at night.

A day with a live-in carer in Gants Hill

Every care plan is different, but a day often looks something like this:

  1. Morning. Help to wash and dress, breakfast for both, and medication from the blister pack, recorded on the chart.
  2. Late morning. Shopping on the roundabout, or a slow walk into the northern end of Valentines Park.
  3. Afternoon. The carer's protected break. If the healthier partner is happy to be in charge for two hours, the carer can go out; if not, a family member covers. Gants Hill Library on Cranbrook Road is another option.
  4. Evening. Dinner, a bath or shower, and getting ready for bed at the time each of them prefers.
  5. Night. The carer sleeps in their own room and can be called if needed. If one partner needs help several times a night, every night, one carer is not enough, and we will say so.

How do carers get to Gants Hill for a changeover?

Most come on the Central line. Gants Hill station is on the Hainault loop, and from central London it is a direct ride, or a change at Stratford from the Elizabeth line or DLR. The ticket hall is under the roundabout, reached by escalators and subways, so a carer with a suitcase surfaces on one corner of the junction.

Parking near the station is restricted, and whether your own road is controlled depends on where it is. Check your street on the council's permit parking zone map before changeover day; if it is controlled, the carer's car will need one of your visitor permits for each day it stays.

If one of you is having memory problems. The Redbridge Memory Service, run by NELFT, is on Aldborough Road North in Newbury Park, a short journey east along Eastern Avenue. Referral is through the GP. A live-in carer can go with your relative to appointments and keep notes for the family. Our dementia care page explains our approach.

After a hospital stay

The nearest A&E to Gants Hill is King George Hospital in Goodmayes. When one partner is in hospital, the other is often at home alone, so the discharge plan has to work for both. Ask the ward to include the partner at home in the discharge conversation, and call us early so we can assess the house and agree a start date. See our hospital discharge support.

What does live-in care for a couple cost in Gants Hill?

We give a written quote after the assessment, and the cost depends on how much each person needs, especially at night. Redbridge Council assesses each partner separately: you can ask for a needs assessment online or on 020 8708 7333, and the financial assessment follows. NHS Continuing Healthcare is a separate route if one partner's needs are mainly health needs. The detail is on our Redbridge live-in care page. For visits instead of live-in care, see home care in Gants Hill, and for the service in general, live-in care in London.

Live-in care in Gants Hill: your questions

Questions families ask us about Gants Hill. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
My father wants to keep caring for Mum himself. Will a live-in carer take over?

Only as much as he wants. The care plan can leave him the parts he wants to keep, such as making her tea or sitting with her in the evening, while the carer does the lifting, washing and nights.

Mum now sleeps downstairs and Dad is still upstairs. Where does the carer sleep?

Usually in the bedroom closest to whoever needs more help at night, often with a baby monitor or call bell for the other. We look at the layout of the house before deciding.

If the council funds care for Mum but not for Dad, can the same carer help both?

Yes. The council funds the care it has assessed for your mother, and any extra help for your father can be paid for privately. The care plan sets out which tasks are for whom.

Our street is a long walk from Gants Hill station. Does that matter for live-in care?

Not much. The carer makes the journey at the start and end of a placement, not every day, so a longer walk or a bus from the roundabout is fine.

What happens if one of my parents dies while the carer is living with them?

We talk to the family straight away about what the surviving partner needs next. Live-in care can continue for them alone, with the care plan rewritten, or we can help plan a change.
