Gants Hill takes its name from the roundabout where the A12 Eastern Avenue crosses Cranbrook Road, with Woodford Avenue running in from the north-west. The shops and restaurants sit on the ring; the flats around it include the block built on the site of the old Odeon cinema between Eastern Avenue and Perth Road. Step off the main roads and it becomes quiet and residential. The Commonwealth Estate, with roads named after cities such as Aden, Colombo, Auckland, Toronto and Quebec, runs down towards Ilford, and Valentines Park lies between the two.
Interwar semis: what they mean for care
Most of the housing is interwar semi-detached and terraced houses. They are good homes for care in one respect: many have a third bedroom, which is what live-in care needs. The usual difficulty is the staircase, with the bathroom and bedrooms upstairs and the kitchen and living room down. At the assessment we look at whether a stairlift, grab rails or a second banister would help, or whether a bed downstairs makes more sense for now. Can a carer get to Gants Hill easily?
Reasonably. Gants Hill station is on the Hainault loop of the Central line. From Lewisham a carer travels by DLR to Stratford and then on the Central line, about an hour door to door. That is why we check carer availability before agreeing a visiting rota. Buses on the roundabout include the 66, 123, 128, 150, 167, 179, 296, 396 and 462, and the 396 also serves King George Hospital in Goodmayes. There are parking restrictions near the station, so a carer who drives may need one of your visitor permits.
The 1947 station, designed by Charles Holden with a concourse modelled on the Moscow Metro, is reached by subways and escalators from a ticket hall under the roundabout. For someone who cannot manage escalators, a bus may be easier.
When memory is the worry
The Redbridge Memory Service, run by NELFT, is close by at Aldborough Road North, Newbury Park (IG2 7SR). It assesses and diagnoses dementia, and referral is through the GP. NELFT's service page has the details. While you wait, or after a diagnosis, our dementia care can be a few calls a day to help with meals, medication and routine, building up to live-in care if needed.
A break for the person doing the caring. Short-term live-in care gives a husband, wife or adult child a week or two away while their relative stays at home. Ask a questionOur semi has a box room as the third bedroom. Is that enough for a live-in carer?
Often it is, as long as it can take a proper bed, some storage and has a window. The carer also needs reasonable access to a bathroom and somewhere to make food. We will look at the room during the assessment.
