Live-in Care in Leyton

A carer living in with your relative in E10, between the High Road, Francis Road and Lea Bridge, keeping up their routines, from the Dementia Hub on Sidmouth Road to a walk round Coronation Gardens.

We provide live-in care across Leyton, E10, for one person or a couple, in any home with a spare bedroom for the carer. The carer lives in and helps with personal care, meals, medication, housework and getting out, and we cover their breaks and time off. It begins with a free assessment at home, after which Jackie writes the care plan and introduces the carer.

The easiest changeovers in Waltham Forest

Live-in carers work in rotation, so the journey in and out matters on every changeover. Leyton is the best-connected part of the borough from our side of London: Leyton station on the Central line is one stop from Stratford, which we reach from Lewisham by DLR, roughly 45 to 55 minutes in all. Leyton Midland Road on the Overground Suffragette line and Lea Bridge on the Stratford to Tottenham line give other ways in. The same journey brings Jackie to the house for reviews and, if a carer is unwell, makes a replacement easier to get there than in the north of the borough.

What happens on changeover day?

  1. The incoming carer arrives by train with their luggage; there is no car to park, so the controlled parking zones on Leyton's streets do not get in the way.
  2. Where the timings allow, the two carers overlap so the outgoing carer can hand over in person: how the night went, any change in medication, appointments coming up and anything your relative has been worried about.
  3. The handover is written in the care records as well, so nothing depends on memory.
  4. If you want to be there, tell us the time. Family members driving in can use the household's visitor parking permits.

Split terraces, estate flats and new blocks

Leyton's terraced streets have been divided up in many ways over the years, and the same street can hold a two-bedroom Warner flat upstairs and a one-bedroom flat below. On estates such as Beaumont and in the newer blocks along the High Road and around Lea Bridge, flats are step-free when the lift works, but many new-build flats have one bedroom, which rules out live-in care. Count the bedrooms before anything else: if there is only one, look at visiting care in Leyton, which is more realistic here than in most of the borough.

Where there is room, think about equipment early. A hospital bed or hoist takes floor space that a small terrace bedroom may not have, and a narrow bathroom may need a different layout for showering. A council occupational therapist (ask Adult Social Care on 020 8496 3130) can advise before the carer moves in.

Living with dementia in Leyton, with a carer at home

Leyton is home to the council's Dementia Hub on Sidmouth Road, which hosts outreach, an Alzheimer's Society cognitive stimulation group and CREST's Ageing Well sessions. For someone with dementia, a live-in carer can keep their week anchored around it: getting ready in good time, going along to sessions, and talking through the day afterwards. Keep any Hub referral in your relative's own name, so it carries on whoever is caring for them.

If the Hub staff look after your relative during a session and the carer is not needed there, that time can become the carer's daily break. Check with the Hub first; do not assume it.

Breaks in Coronation Gardens and by the marshes

For the carer's own time off, Coronation Gardens in the centre of Leyton has a bandstand, a fountain and ornamental gardens, with accessible toilets when park staff are in. Leyton Library is on the High Road, and Lea Bridge Library is on Lea Bridge Road. For a longer walk, Leyton Jubilee Park on Seymour Road has a woodland walk along Dagenham Brook. Many of these places work for your relative too, with the carer beside them.

Faith, food and routine

Leyton is a mixed neighbourhood, and the things people want to keep going vary: Friday prayers, Sunday church, a particular way of cooking, the shops on Francis Road. Tell us at the assessment and we put it in the care plan, including any dietary rules the carer must follow in the kitchen. We will not promise a carer who speaks a particular language, but we will tell you honestly what we can offer.

For the family carer stepping back. When a live-in carer starts, the husband, wife or daughter who has been doing everything often needs support of their own. Carers First is on Russell Road in E10, and carers can refer themselves.

Is live-in care in Leyton funded by the council?

It can be part-funded. Waltham Forest assesses needs first, then means-tests, and any council contribution can come as a direct payment that you spend with us. NHS Continuing Healthcare covers the whole cost where needs are mainly health needs, for example in advanced illness. We give a written quote once we have assessed. The full council route is on our Waltham Forest live-in care page, and how live-in care works day to day is on our London live-in care page.

Questions about live-in care in Leyton

Questions families ask us about Leyton. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
How does the carer get to Leyton on changeover day?

Usually by the Central line to Leyton, or the Overground to Leyton Midland Road. They walk from the station with their luggage, so you do not need to arrange parking.

Dad goes to sessions at the Dementia Hub on Sidmouth Road. Can that be the carer's break?

Sometimes. If the Hub's staff are responsible for him during the session, it may be. Check with the Hub, and we will plan the break around what they say.

Mum has a new one-bedroom flat near Lea Bridge. Can she have live-in care?

No, because the carer needs their own bedroom. Visiting care is the option, and Leyton is one of the easier parts of Waltham Forest for us to reach, though we still check carer availability for her times.

My parents keep a halal kitchen. Will the carer respect that?

Yes. Dietary and religious practice goes into the care plan, and the carer follows it when shopping and cooking.
