Live-in Care in Clapton
One carer living in, so a husband and wife, or a parent on their own, can stay in their E5 flat or terrace from Clapton Pond to the edge of the Lea.
We can arrange live-in care anywhere in Clapton, Upper or Lower. The carer takes the spare room and helps with washing, dressing, cooking, tablets and getting about, taking a daily break and sleeping through the night. Because the carer lives in, the distance from our Lewisham office makes no difference, which makes it the practical choice at the north end of the Clapton Road. A free home assessment comes first.
Two people, one carer, one Clapton flat
Couples who have shared a flat on the Clapton Park estate or a house off the Clapton Road for decades can reach the same point at slightly different times. One partner develops dementia, or has a stroke, and the other is managing but frail. A single live-in carer can look after both: personal care for the one who needs it, and cooking, cleaning, shopping and company for the household.
We assess both partners at the free assessment, because the plan has to work for the one who is not the "patient" too. That partner may also be entitled to a carer's assessment from Hackney Council, which looks at their own needs and wellbeing; the council's carers' assessment page explains how to ask, and the Carers Centre on Queensbridge Road can ask the council for one too.
The limits are honest ones. If both partners need two people to move them, or one of them is up repeatedly at night, one carer is not enough and we will say so.
Estate flats and the second bedroom
Clapton Park, the Nightingale Estate off Kenninghall Road and the smaller blocks around them include two- and three-bedroom flats let to families decades ago, where the tenants are now older and the children have left. That makes a spare room for a carer more likely here than in many parts of Hackney. A carer lives there as part of the care arrangement, not as a lodger, but it is still wise to let the landlord know.
On an estate we check the lift, the route from front door to bedroom and bathroom for a wheelchair or frame, and whether there is a level shower; Hackney's occupational therapists assess for adaptations. In the terraces west of the Clapton Road, the question is more often the internal stairs and whether the spare room is up or down them.
What happens at changeover on the Clapton Road?
When carers rotate, the incoming carer usually arrives by Overground or bus. Clapton station, on the Weaver line's Chingford branch from Liverpool Street, serves Upper Clapton; Hackney Downs serves Lower Clapton and connects by a short walk to Hackney Central on the Mildmay line. If the line is closed, the 253 and 254 buses along the Clapton Road are the fallback for a carer with luggage.
If anyone drives, the zone matters. On Hackney's parking zones page, zone N (Homerton and Lower Clapton) starts at 7.30am on weekdays and has longer hours on Olympic Park event days; zone U (Upper Clapton) runs Monday to Saturday, apart from a northern section with a short late-morning weekday window. Visitor vouchers come from the council, and estate car parks have their own.
The carer's break by the Lea
Clapton is one of the best parts of Hackney for a carer's time off. Springfield Park at the top of Upper Clapton has a café in Springfield House, open every day, and two disabled parking bays by the main entrance, so it also works for an outing with the person. The towpath along the Lee Navigation runs south from there through Millfields Park towards Hackney Marshes. Clapton Library on Northwold Road, E5 8RA, is a quieter option on a wet day.
If the person cannot be left during the break, cover is agreed with the family before the placement starts.
Live-in care and a place at Oswald Street
Hackney Council's Oswald Street day centre in Clapton supports adults with complex needs, including dementia and learning or physical disabilities, with places agreed through an adult social care assessment. A day centre place and a live-in carer fit together: the carer gets the person ready for the day and settles them on return, and the hours at the centre give the carer a natural window for their break.
Discharge from Homerton, and care at the end of life
Homerton University Hospital is just south of Clapton, so most E5 discharges come from there. Live-in care suits a discharge when someone is too unsteady to be alone between visits, or when their partner at home cannot manage the nights of the first weeks alone. Call us when the ward first raises discharge; see hospital discharge support.
If the stay ends with a decision to focus on comfort, a carer living in can make it possible to spend the last weeks at home in Clapton, with the GP and district nurses visiting and St Joseph's Hospice on Mare Street advising where it is involved. See palliative care.
Paying for it
Prices are quoted individually, in writing, after the assessment. Each partner can be assessed by Hackney Council for help with the cost, and either may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare if their needs are mainly health needs; see live-in care in Hackney. For visits instead, see home care in Clapton; for placements in general, live-in care in London.

Clapton live-in care: common questions
Questions families ask us about Clapton. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMy husband has dementia and I have bad arthritis. Can one carer help us both on Clapton Park?
Very likely, if you have a spare bedroom and neither of you needs help through the night. We assess you both, write one plan for the household, and include what you want to keep doing yourself.
Can the carer take Dad round Springfield Park in his wheelchair?
Yes, if it is safe for him on the day. The park drops down the hill towards the River Lea, so we agree a route with you that the carer can push him back up, and write the outing into the care plan.
If Mum keeps her days at Oswald Street, do we still need a live-in carer?
That depends on her evenings, nights and weekends. If she cannot be alone outside the centre's hours, live-in care covers those; if she can, visiting care might be enough. We will talk it through at the assessment.
What if a changeover falls on a day the carer cannot get through because of Overground engineering works?
We plan for the outgoing carer to stay until the replacement arrives, or agree cover with you in advance. Check TfL's planned closures when the changeover date is set, and tell us if you spot one.
