Live-in Care in Ruislip

For Ruislip couples who want to stay in the house they bought together: one carer living in, supporting one or both of you, from Ruislip village and the Manor to South and West Ruislip.

Yes, we provide live-in care in Ruislip and throughout HA4. A carer moves into your spare bedroom and supports you, or both of you, through the day, following a care plan we write with you after a free home assessment. Ruislip is a long way from our Lewisham office, which matters for visiting care but not for live-in care: once the carer is in the house, they are local.

Can one live-in carer look after both of us?

Usually, yes. Picture a husband and wife in their eighties, one of whom has started to need real help, and the other who has been providing it alone. A single live-in carer can:

  • give personal care, medication support and help on the stairs to the partner who needs it;
  • cook, shop and keep the house going for both of you;
  • go with one of you to an appointment while the other has company at home, or take you both out together;
  • be in the house overnight, so the healthier partner is no longer the only person on hand if something happens.

The care plan covers both people, and the quote reflects that. Where it stops working is when both partners need two people to move them, or one needs someone awake most of the night. We would rather say that at the assessment than find out a month in.

Bungalow, semi or maisonette: making room for a carer

Ruislip's housing makes live-in care easier than in most of London. The interwar semis nearly always have a second bedroom, often a grown-up child's old room, and that is all the carer needs.

The bungalows dotted between the semis are the simplest of all. Everything is on one level, a ceiling or mobile hoist has room to work, and the carer's bedroom is a few steps from yours. In a semi, the common arrangement once stairs become difficult is that the person moves to a bed in the front room while the carer sleeps upstairs. That works, but it needs planning: a call bell or listening monitor, a downstairs commode or toilet, and an agreement about how the carer is woken. Upper maisonettes, with a full flight behind the front door and no lift, are the hardest to keep going long term, and a stairlift is not always possible in them.

Hillingdon Council can arrange an occupational therapy assessment for equipment and adaptations. We look at the same things at our visit and will tell you plainly if the layout needs changing first.

How changeovers work in HA4

Carers coming from south-east London reach Ruislip on the Central line to South Ruislip, Ruislip Gardens or West Ruislip, or on the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines to Ruislip and Ruislip Manor. It is a long trip from Lewisham, so we plan changeover days in advance, with an overlap for the handover.

Parking is free on most Ruislip roads. Around Ruislip town centre and near some of the stations there are Parking Management Scheme permit bays, usually controlled on weekdays in the daytime, with the hours shown on the bay signs. If a carer will drive to you regularly, Hillingdon issues a free carers' permit to the household on a letter from the care provider, and we can supply that letter.

The carer's afternoon off

A live-in carer's daily break is protected, and Ruislip is a good place to have one. Churchfield Gardens sits right beside the High Street and St Martin's Church, for a sit in the sun between errands. Manor Farm Library, on the Manor Farm site on Bury Street, is a quiet place to read or use a computer. For a longer walk, Ruislip Woods, the largest block of ancient woodland in Greater London, starts at Reservoir Road by the Lido.

The woods are not just for the carer. The council publishes easy-access guided routes, so a slow walk with a stick or a frame, or a wheelchair outing on firmer paths, can be part of the care plan.

When one of you is in hospital. If your husband or wife is admitted to Hillingdon Hospital and the partner at home cannot manage alone, a live-in carer can start at home first. The same carer is then already settled when the patient is discharged, and the first nights back are covered. Tell the ward you are arranging this, and see our hospital discharge page.

Paying for live-in care in Ruislip

You get a written quote after the free assessment. Even if you expect to pay privately, it is worth asking Hillingdon Council for a needs assessment anyway; our live-in care in Hillingdon page explains how, and how the house is treated in the means test. If health needs dominate, ask the GP or ward about NHS Continuing Healthcare. For visiting care in HA4, see home care in Ruislip, and for how live-in care works generally, live-in care in London.

Ruislip FAQs

Ruislip couples ask us

Questions families ask us about Ruislip. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum now sleeps downstairs, but the spare room is upstairs. How will the carer hear her at night?

Usually with a listening monitor or a call bell by her bed, and a clear plan for when she should call. If she needs help most nights, one carer cannot do days and nights for long, and we will discuss night cover.

Only my husband has dementia. Will the carer help me as well?

Yes, if we write it into the plan. Meals, shopping, lifts to your own appointments and simply giving you time off are all part of supporting a couple.

Will our South Ruislip bungalow take a hoist and a live-in carer?

Very likely. Bungalows are usually the easiest homes for both. We check the bedroom and bathroom space at the assessment and can point you to the council's occupational therapy service for the hoist itself.

We live in Ruislip Gardens. Which station will the carer use?

Ruislip Gardens itself is on the Central line only, so a carer coming that way gets off there. Homes nearer the village are easier from Ruislip or Ruislip Manor on the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines. We send each carer the nearest station for your address before they travel.
