Live-in Care in North Harrow
A carer who lives in the box room of a three-bedroom HA2 semi, takes over the daily care from a tired husband or wife, and knows the way to Headstone Manor for a walk.
Yes, we provide live-in care in North Harrow. Once Jackie has assessed the person at home, free of charge, and the care plan is agreed in writing, a trained carer moves in to help one person, or a couple, with washing, dressing, cooking, tablets and company. Our office is in Lewisham, but a live-in carer travels only at the start and end of a placement, so the distance doesn't affect the care.
A week of live-in care around Pinner Road
The care plan sets the routine, and in North Harrow much of it can be on foot. On a good day that might mean a slow walk to the Pinner Road or Station Road parades for shopping and prescriptions, or, for someone who enjoys company, one of the Age UK Hillingdon, Harrow and Brent social groups that meet at Harrow Carers on Pinner Road. The carer's daily break is planned around those fixed points, with a relative sitting in when the person cannot be left. Nights are for the carer's sleep unless the plan agrees otherwise.
If someone needs help several times a night, one carer cannot also cover the day, and we will say so at the assessment.
Will a live-in carer have room in a North Harrow house?
Almost always. North Harrow's 1920s and 30s semis and terraces mostly have three bedrooms, and the box room becomes the carer's. It has to be theirs alone, with a bed, storage and a door, not shared with a home office or the grandchildren's toys.
The bathroom upstairs is the harder part. A straight staircase usually takes a standard stairlift. If someone can no longer manage stairs at all, the choice is usually a bed and commode in the front room or a through-floor lift, which is a bigger job. Harrow Council's occupational therapists assess for equipment, and a means-tested Disabled Facilities Grant can help with major adaptations. Care can begin before works finish if the interim plan is safe.
A one-bedroom flat can't take a live-in carer. Our home care in North Harrow page covers visiting care, which depends on having carers available.
How does a carer changeover work at North Harrow station?
When one carer hands over to the next, the date is agreed ahead. North Harrow is on the Metropolitan line between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Pinner, with trains from Baker Street and Aldgate. At peak times fast trains run through without stopping, so a carer may need to change at Harrow-on-the-Hill. West Harrow, on the Uxbridge branch, is the other station within walking distance for homes to the south.
If anyone drives on handover day, check the street first: the roads around the station and the parades are mostly in a controlled parking zone, and the hours vary by zone. Residents inside a zone can buy virtual visitor permits for a car, each valid for up to 24 hours. Further out, most streets have no restrictions.
No library on the doorstep: breaks and outings
North Harrow no longer has a library of its own. The nearest of Harrow's six branches are Pinner Library on Marsh Road and Greenhill Library in Harrow town centre, one stop away, which has a Changing Places toilet for someone who needs a hoist while out. For a reader who can no longer get out, Harrow's free Home Library and Befriending Service delivers books every four weeks, including large print, audiobooks and books in languages such as Gujarati and Hindi.
For the carer's break, or a walk together, Headstone Manor Park, a Green Flag park, is north of the station. The museum in the moated manor house is free, and the access information notes that the Moat Café and the ground floors of the main buildings take wheelchairs, with a free car park and Blue Badge bays on Pinner View. Both close on Mondays and open fewer days in winter. West Harrow Recreation Park is closer for homes near West Harrow.
When a husband or wife has been doing the caring
When the person doing the caring is a husband or wife who is ageing too, a live-in carer can take over the physical work, so the couple stay together and the partner has time to look after their own health.
That partner can get support of their own nearby: Harrow Carers, on Pinner Road in North Harrow, is the charity the council names for unpaid carers, and the council's carers' page explains how to request a carer's assessment.
Home from Northwick Park, or from Stanmore
Most North Harrow patients are discharged from Northwick Park Hospital, a short Metropolitan line journey away via Harrow-on-the-Hill. Anyone who has had major joint or spinal surgery may come home from the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore. The first weeks home mean stairs, a new walking frame and exercises someone has to encourage, and a live-in carer is there for all of it, after or alongside Harrow's free reablement. Call us before the discharge date is set. Our discharge support page explains what we need from the ward.
The cost, and who pays
We quote in writing after the free assessment. Harrow Council may contribute after a needs assessment and means test, direct payments can pay us, and NHS Continuing Healthcare may fund care where needs are mainly health needs. Our live-in care in Harrow page explains each; live-in care in London covers how placements work.

Questions from North Harrow families
Questions families ask us about North Harrow. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionI've been looking after my wife for years. Will a live-in carer push me out?
No. The care plan records what you want to keep doing and what you want the carer to take on. You might keep the parts you enjoy, such as making the tea or the walk to the shops, and hand over the washing and lifting.
Dad needs a hoist to get out of bed. Can one live-in carer manage that?
It depends on the equipment and his risk assessment. Many hoist transfers need two people. If he needs a second person, we will say so at the assessment and discuss what is realistic in HA2.
Mum's from a Gujarati-speaking family and loves to read. What can the carer do?
Tell us her language and routines at the assessment and we will look for a good match. The carer can also help her join Harrow's home library service, which delivers books in Gujarati.
Can we have live-in care just for a fortnight while I have my own operation?
Yes, a short live-in stay works as respite care. Book it as early as you can, because we need time to assess and match a carer before your admission date.
