Live-in Care in South Harrow
Live-in carers for South Harrow homes, HA2, from the rebuilt flats on Grange Farm and Northolt Road to the 1930s houses towards Roxeth, including care that begins when someone comes home from Northwick Park.
Yes, we arrange live-in care in South Harrow. One of our carers moves into the home, with their own bedroom, and gives day-to-day help with personal care, moving about safely, medicines, meals and company. We begin with a free assessment in the home, write a care plan, and introduce the carer, and because they live in, the long trip from our Lewisham office never affects a morning wash or an evening meal.
Can a live-in carer work in a South Harrow flat?
Yes, if the flat has two bedrooms. Alongside its houses, South Harrow has plenty of flats: the homes rebuilt on the Grange Farm estate, the newer blocks along Northolt Road, and conversions above the shops.
- Is there a second bedroom the carer can have to themselves? In newer blocks the second bedroom is often compact. A single bed, somewhere to hang clothes and a door that closes is enough. A sofa bed in the living room is not.
- Is there a lift, and what happens if it stops? A lift makes a wheelchair, a hospital bed and hoist deliveries straightforward. Ask the managing agent or housing officer how quickly repairs are carried out. The care plan should say what happens if it is out.
- Is the bathroom level-access? Rebuilt homes often have a level shower. If not, a shower chair or a bath board may be the first equipment to arrange through the council's occupational therapists.
Houses off Northolt Road, mostly built in the 1930s, usually have the spare room but not the lift. There, the stairs are the question, and a downstairs bed or a stairlift is the usual answer. In a one-bedroom flat, live-in care cannot work; our home care in South Harrow page covers visiting care instead.
From the ward at Northwick Park to home
Most South Harrow patients go home from Northwick Park, run by London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. A discharge is a good moment to consider live-in care in South Harrow, for three reasons: the person may need help at any hour in the first weeks, family may not be able to stay, and visiting carers from our side of London cannot be relied on for four calls a day.
Two things to know. First, Harrow's free reablement service can last up to six weeks, and existing home care is paused while it runs, so tell the ward and the reablement team that you want live-in care and agree the order. Second, where someone's needs are largely health needs, ask the ward for an NHS Continuing Healthcare checklist before discharge. Call us while the person is still in hospital. We will not promise a start date we cannot meet.
Hoists and two-person care. If the hospital says someone must be moved with a hoist by two people, one live-in carer cannot do that safely alone. We will tell you at the assessment, and talk about what else would be needed alongside the live-in carer, and whether it can be arranged at this distance.
Parking at handover: street zones and estate car parks
Carers hand over in person when one placement ends and the next begins. Travelling by Tube, they take the Piccadilly line to South Harrow on a train towards Uxbridge; trains towards Heathrow split off at Acton Town. Chiltern trains from Marylebone stop at Sudbury Hill Harrow, on the eastern side of the area.
A carer who drives faces two separate parking systems:
- Streets around South Harrow station are in a controlled parking zone, with the hours on the entry signs. A resident inside the zone can buy a virtual visitor permit for the carer's car, valid until midnight on the day.
- Council estate car parks have their own permit schemes, separate from the street zones. Harrow's parking zones page lists the estate zones, including Cowen Avenue and parts of Northolt Road. Ask the estate office what a visitor can use.
Some newer flats are permit-restricted, which means residents cannot get street permits at all. If that applies, tell us, and we will plan the handover around public transport.
The carer's afternoon off on Northolt Road
A live-in carer takes a break each day, agreed in the care plan. Roxeth library on Northolt Road has free Wi-Fi and study space, and opens on Sundays from 11am to 3pm (it is closed on Mondays; Harrow lists the times on its library branches page). Roxeth Recreation Ground, entered from Eastcote Road or Wood End Avenue, has a car park and a green gym. Northolt Road itself has grocers, pharmacies and cafés for the errands that fit into a break.

South Harrow families ask
Questions families ask us about South Harrow. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionThe lift in Dad's block breaks down every few months. Should that rule out live-in care?
Not usually. A live-in carer is already inside the flat when the lift fails, which is safer than relying on visitors climbing the stairs. We build a plan for lift outages into the care plan, including how appointments are handled.
Mum is being discharged from Northwick Park with a frame and a commode. Is there space for those and a carer in a two-bedroom flat?
Usually. Equipment goes where the person sleeps and washes; the carer's room stays theirs. We will look at the layout at the assessment, ideally before discharge, so the equipment arrives in the right place.
Can the carer's car go in our estate car park?
Only under the estate's own permit rules, which are separate from the street parking zones. Ask the estate office before the first handover. If there is nowhere to park, we will plan around the Piccadilly line.
Our flat on Northolt Road is above a shop and noisy at night. Will a live-in carer cope?
A carer needs to sleep properly, so the room matters. Tell us about the noise. A room at the back, or a change of rooms between the carer and the person, often solves it.
