Live-in Care in Northolt, UB5
A carer who lives in, for homes on both sides of Western Avenue, with changeovers planned around the Central line, Zone NS and whichever of three hospitals is sending someone home.
Yes, we provide live-in care in Northolt. A carer moves into the home with their own bedroom and supports the person day to day, so the long trip from our Lewisham office only matters on the day a carer arrives or leaves. Before anything is agreed, Jackie or a colleague visits for a free assessment, looks at the house and writes a care plan with you.
Changeover day at Northolt station
A live-in placement has two moments when travel matters: the carer arriving with a week or more of luggage, and the handover when a relief carer takes over. The Central line runs from central London to Northolt without a change. TfL has been building step-free access at the station, with lifts down to the island platform; check TfL's step-free information before relying on it, and before each changeover, because a lift out of service means stairs with a heavy case.
Carers coming from Marylebone can also use Northolt Park station on the Chiltern line, which is handy for streets near the Racecourse estate.
If the relief carer drives, the parking depends on the street. Roads close to the station, including parts of Mandeville Road, Eastcote Lane, Moat Farm Road and Alderney Gardens, are in Zone NS, which is controlled on weekdays from 9am to 10am and 2pm to 3pm. A handover that runs through one of those hours needs a visitor session. The resident buys these through Ealing's resident visitor permit scheme on the PayByPhone app, and it is worth setting up the account before the first changeover. Northolt also has a separate Zone QQ, so check the signs in your road. Away from both zones, parking is usually unrestricted.
Which Northolt homes have a bedroom for the carer?
The carer needs a room that is theirs: a bed, somewhere to hang clothes, a door that shuts. In Northolt's interwar semis and short terraces that is rarely the obstacle. In the council-built flats and maisonettes it varies from one front door to the next: a two-bedroom home works, provided the second room is free and not full of stored furniture.
Some low-rise blocks have a first-floor entrance with no lift. For live-in care this matters less day to day, since the carer is there to help on the stairs, but it shapes what equipment can go in. A hospital bed or a mobile hoist has to come up that stair, so we check the turns and the width at the assessment.
If the home has only one bedroom, a live-in carer cannot work there, and we will say so. The options then are visits, which in UB5 are the hardest thing for us to staff (our home care in Northolt page is honest about that), or live-in care at a relative's house that does have a spare room.
Three hospitals, one discharge plan
Northolt is unusual because people end up in three different trusts. The west side is close to Hillingdon Hospital, some patients are admitted to or moved to Northwick Park in Harrow, and others go to Ealing Hospital on the Uxbridge Road. Whichever ward it is, the care at home is arranged with Ealing, because UB5 is in Ealing.
Live-in care works well for a discharge here. Visiting care in this corner of the borough is the hardest to staff from Lewisham, while a live-in carer only has to arrive once. Tell the ward early that you are arranging live-in care, ask whether a Continuing Healthcare checklist has been done, and ring us as soon as there is a likely date. The first days at home, when someone is weakest and most likely to fall, are when having a carer in the house counts most. Our hospital discharge support page explains how we prepare.
Nights. A live-in carer sleeps in the house but needs an unbroken night to work safely the next day. If the person needs help several times every night, one carer is not enough, and we will tell you so at the assessment.
A daily break, close to home
Every live-in carer has a protected break each day, and someone has to be with the person, or the person has to be safe alone, while they take it. In Northolt the carer does not have to go far. The flat paths around the ponds at Northala Fields, Northolt Library on Church Road and the old village green by St Mary's church are all close by. Some families cover the break themselves, or time it around a day out such as the Age UK Ealing Wellbeing Day Centre in Greenford, which is for people who can manage their own personal care. We agree the break and who covers it in the care plan from the first day.
Funding a live-in carer in UB5
Northolt residents go through Ealing Council for a needs and financial assessment, and a personal budget can be taken as a direct payment to pay us. Where needs are mainly health needs, NHS Continuing Healthcare may pay the whole cost; the NHS guide explains the checklist. Our live-in care in Ealing page covers the council route and charging in full, and the London live-in care page explains what the carer does each day. We give you a written quote after the free assessment.

Live-in care in Northolt: questions
Questions families ask us about Northolt. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum's road is in Zone NS. Will the relief carer get a ticket at handover?
Only if they park in a resident bay during the controlled hours, which are 9am to 10am and 2pm to 3pm on weekdays, without a visitor session. We plan handover times around those hours where we can, and the resident can buy a visitor session through PayByPhone when we can't.
Dad is in Hillingdon Hospital. Can a live-in carer meet him at home on the day he leaves?
That is what we aim for, provided we have had the assessment and agreed the care plan first. Ring us as soon as the ward mentions a date, so the carer can arrive before he does.
Can the carer arrive by Tube with a big suitcase?
Usually, yes. We check TfL's step-free status for Northolt before the day, and if the lifts are not available we plan another way in, such as a lift from a family member or a taxi from a step-free station.
Our semi has a small third bedroom full of boxes. Does it need to be cleared?
Yes. It has to be a usable private bedroom for the carer, with a bed, storage for clothes and space to sit. Clearing it before the start date is one of the few things we ask families to do.
