Live-in Care in West Drayton

Live-in care in UB7, between the Grand Union Canal and Heathrow: a carer in the spare room of your terrace or flat, a quiet place for them to rest, and Hillingdon Hospital two miles up the road.

Yes, we provide live-in care in West Drayton and the rest of UB7. A carer moves into your home, takes the spare bedroom and supports you through the day following a care plan agreed after a free home assessment. West Drayton is on the Elizabeth line, so our carers can reach it directly for the start of a placement and for each changeover.

Will a live-in carer get any rest under the Heathrow flight path?

It is a fair question, and one families in West Drayton should ask. A live-in carer works a long day and must have proper, undisturbed rest at night, or the arrangement breaks down. With aircraft overhead and airport traffic on the roads, the room the carer sleeps in matters more here than in most of London.

At the assessment we look at which bedrooms are quietest, whether the windows are double-glazed, and whether the carer's room is near enough to hear the person if they call. Sometimes the answer is to give the carer the room at the front and keep the back bedroom for the person, or the other way round. If the only spare room is the noisy one, heavy curtains and earplugs can help, and if we think a carer still could not rest there, we will say so at the assessment.

Terraces by the Green, flats by the station

West Drayton's homes fall into three groups, and each sets up a live-in placement differently.

  • Victorian and interwar terraces around the old village and the Green usually have two or three bedrooms, so there is a carer's room, but the bathroom tends to be upstairs. Plan for that before the stairs become impossible.
  • Post-war council houses and flats are often roomier inside. A ground-floor flat with two bedrooms and level access is one of the best homes for a hoist or a wheelchair.
  • New flats near the station and the canal have lifts and step-free entrances. Check the second bedroom is a real bedroom and not a study, because the carer will live in it for weeks at a time.

In a one-bedroom flat live-in care is not possible, and home care in West Drayton describes the visiting options.

Changeover day at West Drayton station

Carers travelling from south-east London change from the DLR to the Elizabeth line at Canary Wharf and ride straight through to West Drayton, roughly 70 minutes from our Lewisham office. National Rail lists West Drayton station as step-free to all platforms, though lifts and footbridges are sometimes out of action, so the carer checks the station alerts before travelling with luggage.

Most UB7 side streets are free to park on, but some roads near the station and town centre have Parking Management Scheme permit bays, with the operating hours shown on the signs. Outside those hours anyone can park there; inside them, use a visitor session from the council's visitor permit scheme. We plan an overlap at every changeover so the outgoing carer can hand over in person.

A break on the Green

The carer's daily break is protected. The Southlands, on The Green, has ornamental gardens, a hay-cut meadow walk, a pond and the Southlands Arts Centre: a calm place to spend an hour. The Closes, on Church Close, is another park close by, and West Drayton Library on Station Road has computers and somewhere quiet to sit.

The Southlands works for the person being cared for too: a slow circuit of the ornamental gardens and the pond, or a visit to the Southlands Arts Centre, can be written into the care plan. Couples can go out together with the carer, so neither partner is left at home alone.

Two miles from the ward. Hillingdon Hospital on Pield Heath Road is about two miles north of West Drayton, and it is where most UB7 discharges come from. Live-in care suits a discharge here because it covers the first nights at home, when a fall or a bout of confusion is a real risk. Ring us as soon as the ward mentions a date, and read our hospital discharge page.

Funding and the next step

We quote in writing after the free assessment, so you know the cost before you agree to anything. For council funding, start with Hillingdon Social Care Direct; our live-in care in Hillingdon page explains the route and the means test. Where needs are mainly health needs, the NHS Continuing Healthcare guide explains when the NHS pays. For how live-in care works anywhere in the city, see live-in care in London.

West Drayton live-in care FAQs

Questions families ask us about West Drayton. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum's spare room faces the airport and is the noisiest in the house. Can the carer still use it?

Possibly, with good double glazing. If the carer cannot get proper rest there, we may suggest swapping rooms. A carer who cannot sleep cannot care well for long.

What happens if the lifts at West Drayton station are out on changeover day?

The carer checks before setting off and can travel to a nearby step-free station or come by taxi for the last leg. The outgoing carer stays until the new one arrives.

Mum used to go to the Southlands Arts Centre. Can the carer take her again?

Yes. It is on The Green, so a short walk or wheelchair trip from much of West Drayton, and outings like this can be planned into her week around how far she can manage.

Dad is due home from Hillingdon Hospital at the end of the week. Is that too soon?

Call us straight away. We will tell you honestly whether we can assess and have a carer ready in time, and if not, what to ask the ward while we arrange it.
