Live-in Care in Stockwell for Estate Flats and Terraces
A carer who lives with your relative in SW9 or SW8, whether that is a two-bedroom flat on Stockwell Park or Lansdowne Green, or a converted villa near Stockwell Park Crescent.
Yes, we provide live-in care in Stockwell. A carer lives in the person's home, in a bedroom of their own, and helps with personal care, medication, meals, company and getting out, for one person or a couple. Before anything is arranged, Jackie, our registered manager, carries out a free home assessment and agrees a written care plan with you.
Is a Stockwell estate flat big enough for live-in care?
Much of Stockwell's housing is on post-war council estates such as Stockwell Park and Lansdowne Green, so this is usually the first question. The answer depends on the number of bedrooms.
- Two or more bedrooms: live-in care can work well. The carer takes the second bedroom.
- One bedroom, or a studio: not suitable. Our Stockwell home care page covers visiting care instead.
- Maisonettes over two floors: workable, though the bathroom is often upstairs. We look at the internal stairs and whether a stairlift or a downstairs commode is needed.
In the Stockwell Park Crescent conservation area, the Victorian villas and terraces are often split into flats. A garden flat can be ideal: level access to the garden and a second bedroom at the back. An upper flat in the same house may have a long shared staircase that makes a hoist or wheelchair hard to get in and out.
Telling the landlord that a carer is living in
Many Stockwell residents rent from Lambeth Council or a housing association. If someone will be living in the flat as a carer, tell the housing office at the start and check the tenancy agreement. The carer is there because of their job, not as a lodger, but landlords still want to know who is living in their properties. Raise any repairs that affect care at the same time, such as a failing lift or a bath that needs to become a level-access shower.
Stockwell station on changeover day
Stockwell is where the Victoria and Northern lines meet, so a carer can arrive at changeover from almost anywhere in London with one change or none. That makes it one of the easier parts of Lambeth for live-in placements.
Arriving by car is harder. Stockwell is covered by controlled parking zones, and Lambeth's street visitor vouchers are not valid on council estates. Estates have their own estate and visitor parking e-permits, valid only for the vehicle, estate and bay shown on the permit. If a carer plans to drive, sort this out before the first changeover. With two Tube lines at Stockwell, public transport is usually the simpler choice.
Home from St Thomas' to a Stockwell flat
St Thomas' Hospital, beside Westminster Bridge, is the main acute hospital for most of Stockwell, and King's College Hospital serves the streets on the Brixton side. After a hospital stay, the first nights back in an estate flat can be the hardest, with new equipment and new medication. A live-in carer is there from the first evening. Let the ward know early that you are planning live-in care, and read our hospital discharge page.
Off duty on South Lambeth Road and in the local parks
Every live-in carer has a protected break each day. In Stockwell they can spend it at:
- Tate South Lambeth Library, 180 South Lambeth Road, which the council describes as being in the heart of Lambeth's Portuguese community. It has free Wi-Fi and study space, and is closed on Tuesdays and Sundays.
- Larkhall Park, off Courland Grove in SW8, with a community garden and tennis courts.
- Slade Gardens, off Stockwell Park Road between Stockwell and Brixton, with benches, walking routes and a nature conservation area.
- The Portuguese cafés and bakeries along South Lambeth Road.
A walk to Slade Gardens or a coffee on South Lambeth Road can be part of the person's own day, too.
Day centres with a community focus. Lambeth's day care list includes the Lambeth Chinese Community Association at 69 Stockwell Road and the Lambeth Elderly Association from Vietnam on Courland Grove. Places follow a council needs assessment. A live-in carer can take someone there and collect them, so they keep their friendships and their own language each week.
Couples, language and the Portuguese community
Stockwell's Portuguese community has been settled along South Lambeth Road for decades, and many of the people who arrived first are now older. When one partner in such a household needs care, routines, food and faith matter a great deal. Tell us at the assessment which language your relatives are most comfortable in, and whether they go to Mass or another service. We will try to match, and we will be honest if we cannot. One live-in carer can support both partners, with each person's needs set out separately in the care plan.
Funding live-in care in Stockwell
Stockwell is wholly in Lambeth, so Lambeth Adult Social Care handles needs assessments and council funding, which can be taken as a direct payment to spend on live-in care. Where needs are mainly health needs, NHS Continuing Healthcare may pay for everything. Our Lambeth live-in care page sets out the routes, and live-in care in London explains how placements and cover work. We give a written quote after the free assessment.

Stockwell live-in care questions
Questions families ask us about Stockwell. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum is a council tenant on Stockwell Park with a spare bedroom. Do we need permission for a live-in carer?
Tell the housing office and check her tenancy agreement before the carer moves in. The carer lives there as part of their job and is not her lodger, but the landlord should know who is living in the flat.
Dad's flat is a maisonette with the bathroom upstairs. Can a live-in carer manage that?
Often, yes. The carer can help him on the stairs, and we may suggest a commode downstairs for nights. If the stairs become unsafe, the council's occupational therapists can assess for a stairlift or other changes.
Mum goes to the Chinese community day centre on Stockwell Road. Can she keep going?
Yes. The carer can take her and collect her, and her centre days go into the weekly plan. Once centre staff are looking after her, those hours can also count towards the carer's break.
My parents live in a garden flat off Stockwell Park Crescent with two bedrooms. Can one carer look after both?
Usually, yes, and the second bedroom is enough for the carer. We assess each parent separately so the plan is clear about who needs what. If both need a lot of help at night, we will discuss whether one carer is enough.
