Live-in Care in Brixton
A carer who lives with your relative in SW2 or SW9, from a two-bedroom flat in Angell Town to a terraced house up Brixton Hill, and who knows the way to the market, the library and church.
Yes, we provide live-in care in Brixton. One of our carers moves into the home, has their own bedroom there, and gives day-to-day help with personal care, medication, cooking and getting out, for one person or a couple. Jackie, our registered manager, visits first for a free assessment, and a written care plan is agreed before the carer arrives.
Can a live-in carer move into a Brixton flat?
It depends on the bedrooms more than the building: the carer needs a room with a bed and a door that closes.
- Loughborough Estate and Angell Town. Two- and three-bedroom flats work well. The lift matters twice over: for the person's wheelchair or frame, and for a carer arriving with a suitcase on changeover day.
- Upstairs flats in split terraces. Along Brixton Hill and the roads off Coldharbour Lane, a flat may have a box room that suits a carer perfectly. The common staircase is the harder part: a hoist can be used inside the flat, but a stairlift in a shared hallway usually needs the freeholder's agreement.
- Newer blocks near the town centre. Level access and lifts make equipment easy, but many of these flats have a single bedroom.
In a one-bedroom flat, live-in care cannot work long term; our visiting home care in Brixton is the alternative.
From King's College Hospital back to SW2 or SW9
For Brixton, the nearest A&E is King's College Hospital at Denmark Hill, so that is where many people come home from. A discharge into a flat is often the moment live-in care makes sense: the first nights home after a fall or a stroke are when someone is most likely to need help getting to the toilet, and a carer sleeping in the next room is there for it.
Tell the ward that you are looking at live-in care as soon as discharge is mentioned, and give us the expected date. We will be honest about whether a carer can be in place by then. Our page on coming home from hospital explains the steps.
Changeover day on the Victoria line
A live-in carer works a placement and then hands over to the next carer, who arrives with their bags. Brixton makes that easy. The Victoria line ends here, so a carer can travel in from Victoria, Euston or King's Cross without changing. Southeastern trains stop at Brixton rail station, and Thameslink at Loughborough Junction.
Driving in is the exception. If an incoming carer brings a car to a street in a controlled parking zone, the resident can buy Lambeth visitor vouchers. They are virtual day vouchers tied to the car's registration and valid only in the resident's own zone, with a limit of 50 per household in any 12 months, and the council can take up to 10 working days to approve the proof of address, so set the account up before the first changeover. The vouchers do not work on council estates, which have their own estate permit system.
The carer's daily break, around Windrush Square
Every live-in carer has a protected break each day, planned into the rota so that the person is safe while they are off. In Brixton there is somewhere close by to spend it:
- Brixton Tate Library on Brixton Oval, facing Windrush Square, is open every day except bank holidays, with free Wi-Fi for library members and quiet space to sit.
- Brockwell Park, at the southern end of Brixton towards Herne Hill, has a walled flower garden and long paths for a walk.
If the person cannot be left alone, someone has to cover the break. That might be a relative, a friend from church or a relief carer, and we agree who at the assessment.
For the person who was caring before us. Carers' Hub Lambeth, at 336 Brixton Road, supports family carers, including with benefits advice, and you do not need a council carer's assessment first.
Two people, one home, one carer
Some Brixton couples came to London in the Windrush years and have shared the same flat ever since. When one needs care, the other often wants to keep their place in the kitchen and their pew on Sunday. A live-in carer can do the heavy work, such as washing, lifting and the 3am help to the bathroom, while the partner who is well carries on as before. We assess both people and quote for the household after meeting you.
Paying for live-in care from a Brixton address
Brixton is in Lambeth, so a council needs assessment and any council funding come through Lambeth Adult Social Care, and a council personal budget can be taken as a direct payment and used for live-in care. If the person's needs are mainly health needs, NHS Continuing Healthcare may pay. Our Lambeth live-in care page sets out both routes. For how live-in care works day to day, see live-in care across London.

Live-in care in Brixton: your questions
Questions families ask us about Brixton. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum has a two-bedroom flat in Angell Town, but the lift is often broken. Is live-in care still sensible?
It can be, and in some ways it suits her better than visits, because someone is already inside when the lift is out. We will plan for the bad days: medication and food kept stocked, and a clear plan for getting her down safely if she has a hospital appointment. Report the lift problems to the housing office as well.
The carer is coming by car. Can we use our visitor vouchers on changeover day?
Yes, if you live on a street in a Lambeth controlled parking zone. The voucher is linked to the carer's registration and covers one day in your zone. If you live on a council estate, street vouchers do not apply, so ask the estate office about its visitor permits.
Dad goes to Age UK Lambeth on Acre Lane. Can the live-in carer take him?
Yes. Taking him to activities he already enjoys is part of the job. Time he spends at an activity can sometimes give the carer their break, if staff there are looking after him, and we can plan the week around his regular days.
Mum still cooks the Caribbean dishes she grew up with. Can a live-in carer fit in with that?
Tell us at the assessment what she eats, who usually does the cooking and how she likes it done. We will try to match a carer who is comfortable cooking it, and be honest if we cannot. If she wants to keep cooking herself, the carer can do the lifting, chopping and washing up while she stays in charge of the pot.
