Live-in Care in Balham

Yes, we provide live-in care in Balham, in SW12 and SW17. A carer moves into the home with a bedroom of their own and supports one person, or both halves of a couple, through the day. When one of you needs care and the other doesn't

Live-in care is worth a look when one partner has been doing everything for the other and can't keep going. Without help, the alternative may be a care home for one and an empty flat for the other. A live-in carer changes the balance:

• The carer does the personal care, the lifting and the help at night, which are the jobs that wear a spouse down.
• The partner who is well keeps their own routine, their friends and their afternoons out.
• Meals, laundry and the shopping are done for both.

We assess both people, because the price depends on what each of them needs, and we set it out in writing. If both partners need two people to move them, one live-in carer is not enough, and we will say so.

Is a Balham flat big enough for a live-in carer?

For a couple, the test is a third person: the couple's bedroom plus a separate room for the carer. In Balham that usually means:

• 1930s mansion blocks on the High Road, such as Du Cane Court. A two-bedroom flat can house a couple and a carer, and the lifts make wheelchairs and equipment manageable.
• Converted terraces around Bedford Hill and towards the commons. Ground-floor flats with a garden room or a second bedroom can work. An upper flat reached by a steep shared staircase is harder for anyone with poor mobility, carer or not.
