Home Care in Mill Hill, NW7

Care at home for older and disabled people in Mill Hill Village, along The Ridgeway, around Mill Hill Broadway and in the new streets of Millbrook Park by Mill Hill East.

Yes, JNP Sidona can provide home care in Mill Hill, and for most NW7 addresses the way we do it is live-in care: a carer who moves into the home, so the journey from our Lewisham office stops being a factor. Regular visiting calls are only possible if we have a carer free for your times, so ring us with the postcode and we will tell you plainly. Every arrangement starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan.

Three Mill Hills in one postcode

The care that works differs between the three parts of Mill Hill.

The village on The Ridgeway is the old hilltop settlement, with Mill Hill School, weatherboarded cottages and Green Belt fields falling away on either side. Cottages here can be narrow, low-ceilinged and up steps from the road, so equipment such as a hoist or a hospital bed needs measuring before it is ordered.

Mill Hill Broadway, down by the A41 and the M1, is the busier town centre, surrounded by roads of large interwar semis and detached houses. These are generous homes with a staircase that was fine at sixty and is a worry at eighty-five. A downstairs bedroom or a stairlift is often the first conversation.

Millbrook Park at Mill Hill East has been built since the 2010s on the former Inglis Barracks site, as part of the council's Mill Hill East regeneration. It is a mix of new houses and flats, and new-build homes are usually easier to fit with equipment than the older houses around them.

Is live-in care the realistic option in Mill Hill?

Usually, yes. From Lewisham High Street, Mill Hill takes somewhere between 65 and 80 minutes on public transport, and the houses are spread out across a hilly area where a car helps even for local journeys. Short visiting calls from south-east London rarely add up here; a carer who lives in does not have that problem.

A live-in carer needs a spare bedroom, and most Mill Hill houses have one. Couples can share one carer. The carer has daily breaks, and we arrange cover for their time off.

Use the green. Arrandene Open Space and the fields around The Ridgeway are close by for most of NW7. For someone still steady with support, a slow walk there is a proper part of companionship care.

Trains and buses around NW7

Mill Hill Broadway is on Thameslink, which runs through London Bridge. Mill Hill East is the one-stop spur of the Northern line from Finchley Central. The 240 links the two, running from Golders Green through Mill Hill East and up through Mill Hill Village and past Mill Hill School on The Ridgeway before dropping to the Broadway and on to Edgware. The 221 and 382 also call at Mill Hill East, and the 114, 186, 251 and 303 serve Mill Hill Broadway.

Coming home from Barnet Hospital

Mill Hill residents are usually admitted to and discharged from Barnet Hospital on Wellhouse Lane, run by the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. If a parent is on a ward and the team has started talking about going home, call us then, not on the day. Our hospital discharge support page explains what we do.

How do I ask Barnet Council to assess my parent in Mill Hill?

Mill Hill is in the London Borough of Barnet, whose adult social care front door is Social Care Direct: 020 8359 5000, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, or socialcaredirect@barnet.gov.uk. A needs assessment decides what support is eligible, and a separate means-tested financial assessment decides what the person contributes. Funding can be taken as a direct payment and used with a CQC-registered agency such as ours. We give our own written quote once we have assessed. More on our Barnet home care page.

A break for whoever is caring now

If a husband, wife or adult child is already doing the caring, respite can be a live-in carer for a week or two while they rest or go away. Barnet Carers in North Finchley carries out carers' assessments for the borough and is the place to start for your own support. The Alzheimer's Society's Barnet branch runs a weekly Singing for the Brain group at the Eversfield Centre on Eversfield Gardens, NW7, near Mill Hill Broadway, and we provide dementia care at home alongside groups like that.

Mill Hill FAQs

Mill Hill questions

Questions families ask us about Mill Hill. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad's cottage on The Ridgeway has steps up from the lane. Can he still have care at home?

Often he can. At the assessment we look at the steps, the front door and the room layout, and whether a rail or ramp would help. The council's occupational therapists can advise on equipment and adaptations, and we plan the care around what the house allows.

We live in a new flat at Millbrook Park. Is there room for a live-in carer?

Only if there is a second bedroom the carer can use as their own. Many Millbrook Park homes have one; a one-bedroom flat does not work for live-in care.

Do carers need a car to work in Mill Hill?

For visiting care it helps a great deal, because the houses are spread out and the hill roads are not well served late in the evening. That is one reason we usually suggest live-in care here. A live-in carer does not need a car, though it is useful to know if there is space to park.

Which hospital will Mum be discharged from?

Most likely Barnet Hospital, which covers the north of the borough including Mill Hill. If she was treated elsewhere, tell us and we will plan around that ward's discharge process.

Do you have carers living in Mill Hill?

We cannot promise that. We have no office or base in Barnet; our office is in Lewisham. Live-in carers move in, and whether we can staff visits depends on who is available when you call.
