Home Care in Colindale, NW9
Care at home in the new blocks around Colindale station and Aerodrome Road, the remaining Grahame Park flats, and the older streets between Colindale and Burnt Oak.
Yes, we can arrange home care in Colindale. Colindale is on the Northern line's Edgware branch, a little over an hour from our Lewisham office, so visiting calls depend on whether we have a carer available for your times, while live-in care can be arranged wherever the home has a spare bedroom. Ring us with the address, and we will start with a free assessment and a written care plan.
A neighbourhood that has been rebuilt
No part of Barnet has changed as fast. The old Hendon aerodrome, the police college land off Aerodrome Road, the British Library's former newspaper library and much of the Grahame Park estate have been, or are being, replaced by tall new blocks around Colindale station.
South of Colindale Avenue and up towards Burnt Oak the older Colindale remains: interwar semis and terraces, and the cottage-style houses of the Watling Estate around Burnt Oak. Those homes have stairs, small bathrooms and often a downstairs room that could become a bedroom.
Lifts, fobs and concierges: what visiting care needs here
New blocks make some things easier. There are lifts, level thresholds and wide corridors, so a wheelchair, a hoist or a hospital bed is far simpler to bring in than in a terraced house. They also bring their own problems, and it pays to sort them out before the first visit:
- Getting in. Fob-entry doors and concierge desks mean carers need a reliable way through. We agree this with you and, where needed, with the building management at the assessment. A key safe may need the managing agent's permission.
- Lifts. If the person cannot manage stairs, ask the building what happens when a lift is out of service, and tell us so the care plan covers it.
- Parking. Many new developments have little on-street parking and private underground car parks. Ask the managing agent whether there is a visitor bay a carer could use.
Is there room for a live-in carer in a Colindale flat?
Sometimes. A live-in carer needs their own bedroom, so a one-bedroom flat will not work, and many of the new flats are one- or two-bedroom. In a two-bedroom flat, where the second room is free, live-in care works well: everything is on one level, which suits it. If live-in care is not possible and we cannot staff visits, we will tell you, so you can look elsewhere without losing time.
The council is on your doorstep
Barnet Council's offices are at 2 Bristol Avenue, in the middle of Colindale, and that is also the postal address for Social Care Direct, the council's front door for adult social care. Contact it by phone on 020 8359 5000 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm) or by email at socialcaredirect@barnet.gov.uk to ask for a needs assessment or a carer's assessment; the NHS service listing has the details. Our Barnet home care page covers the means test, direct payments and how discharge works across the borough.
How do I get to hospital appointments from Colindale?
Edgware Community Hospital on Burnt Oak Broadway is the nearest NHS site, with outpatient clinics but no A&E. The 204, 32 and 142 buses run there from Colindale Avenue. For emergencies and inpatient stays, residents are usually treated at Barnet Hospital or the Royal Free in Hampstead, both run by the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. Colindale station is served by the 125, 204, 303, 632 and 642 buses, and the 186 stops on Aerodrome Road. Burnt Oak station, one stop north on the Northern line, has the 114, 204, 251 and 302.
An outing on the doorstep. The RAF Museum London on the old aerodrome site is flat, indoors and close to home. For someone with a forces background, or simply a long memory of the area, a visit with a carer is a good companionship outing.
Short breaks for family carers
If you are looking after a parent around a job, the strain builds quietly, and a planned break helps. Respite from us can be a few hours of sit-in care where we can staff it, or a live-in carer for a week or two. Barnet Carers, the borough's carers' centre, offers carers' assessments, advice and information on short breaks.

Colindale questions
Questions families ask us about Colindale. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionOur block has a concierge. Do we need to tell them about the carers?
Yes. Let the concierge or managing agent know care is starting and who to expect. We will agree how carers get in at the assessment so nobody is left waiting at the door.
Can we fit a key safe outside a flat in a new development?
Check your lease and ask the managing agent first, as many developments control what goes on doors and walls. If a key safe is not allowed, we will agree another way in.
Dad uses a wheelchair and lives on the eighth floor. Is that a problem?
Not for care inside the flat, which is often easier than in a house. The question is what happens if the lift fails, so find out the building's arrangements and tell us at the assessment.
Can I walk into the council offices on Bristol Avenue to ask for an assessment?
Contact Social Care Direct by phone or email to request a needs assessment; that is the council's route in. Bristol Avenue is its postal address.
Mum's flat in the old Grahame Park estate is being demolished. Can care continue when she moves?
Yes. Tell us the moving date and the new address, and we will review the care plan for the new home, especially the layout and how carers get in.
