Home Care in Muswell Hill, N10
Live-in care, and visiting care where we can staff it, in the Edwardian streets around Muswell Hill Broadway, Fortis Green and the slopes below Alexandra Palace.
Yes, we provide home care in Muswell Hill, and live-in care is what we can offer most reliably here. Muswell Hill is one of the hardest parts of Haringey to reach from our Lewisham office, with no Tube or rail station of its own, so regular visits depend on finding a carer who can make the journey at the right times. Every arrangement starts with a free home assessment by Jackie, our registered manager, and a written care plan.
Why live-in care suits Muswell Hill
Muswell Hill was built almost all at once, between about 1900 and 1914, and its family houses have stayed family houses. Many Edwardian terraces and semis here have a spare bedroom, which is the one thing a live-in carer must have. Once the carer has moved in, the distance from south-east London stops mattering.
Size helps with privacy too. In a three- or four-storey Edwardian house the carer's room can be on a different floor from the couple's own, so a husband and wife who have one carer looking after both of them still have their evenings to themselves.
Front steps, steep streets and mansion flats
Edwardian houses come with their own access problems. Many have a flight of steps up to the front door, often with a tiled path and no handrail, and most of the streets fall steeply away from the Broadway. Inside, whether a stairlift fits depends on the width and turn of the staircase, which the council's occupational therapist can assess.
The mansion flats along the main roads are different again. Some have lifts and some don't, and a hoist or hospital bed in a mansion flat needs measuring first. Converted upper-floor flats, with a long private staircase, rarely have room for a live-in carer, so care there is usually by visits.
Getting to N10: no Tube, plenty of buses
The nearest stations are Highgate and East Finchley on the Northern line, Bounds Green on the Piccadilly line and Alexandra Palace on the Great Northern line. From any of them, the last stretch is a bus up the hill: the 43, 102, 134, 144 and W7 all reach the Broadway. From Lewisham the journey takes well over an hour.
Parking is less of a problem. The Muswell Hill zone is controlled from 11am to 1pm every day and Fortis Green from 11am to 1pm on weekdays, so outside those two hours a carer can usually park on the street. The council's CPZ list gives the exact hours for each street's zone.
Getting out is part of staying well. Highgate Wood is a short walk down Muswell Hill Road, and Alexandra Palace park is on the eastern edge of N10. A companionship visit can be a slow walk and a coffee on the Broadway, if someone is still able for it.
Who do I contact at Haringey Council about care for my father in Muswell Hill?
Haringey Adult Social Care handles needs assessments for older people. Apply online through gov.uk's needs assessment service for Haringey, or call 020 8489 1400 and press 1, then the option for your area. A financial assessment follows, and if his savings are above the council's upper limit he will be asked to pay the full cost himself. Breaks for the person doing the caring
A husband or wife caring at home is entitled to a carer's assessment from Haringey Council, and so is a son or daughter who lives elsewhere, as long as the person they care for lives in Haringey. Muswell Hill questions
Questions families ask us about Muswell Hill. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionOur parents' house has a spare room but they say they don't want a stranger living in. What else is there?
Visits, if we can staff them at the times they need, or a short trial of live-in care as respite so they can see what it is like. If privacy is the worry, the care plan can set out when the carer is off duty and in their own room.
Can you care for both my mother and father together?
Yes. One live-in carer can support a couple, with the care plan setting out what each of them needs. If both need two-person help to move, we will discuss whether one carer is enough.
Does a carer need a parking permit in Muswell Hill?
Only during the controlled hours, which are short here: 11am to 1pm in the Muswell Hill zone (every day) and the Fortis Green zone (weekdays), and 10am to 2pm on weekdays in Muswell Hill West. Outside those hours, on-street parking in those zones is free.
Do you cover Fortis Green and the streets near Alexandra Palace?
Yes. We cover N10, including Fortis Green, the Rookfield Estate, the Alexandra Park side and Cranley Gardens. Fortis Green runs into N2, where the council may be Haringey or Barnet, so check the address.
Is Muswell Hill too far for you to send a carer every morning?
It might be. A daily morning visit means a carer travelling well over an hour each way from south-east London, or one who lives nearer. Tell us the time and the postcode and we will be honest about whether we can cover it.
