Home Care in Finchley: N3, N12 and N2
Care at home in Church End, North Finchley and East Finchley, from the shops on Ballards Lane and Regents Park Road to the High Road by East Finchley station.
Yes, JNP Sidona provides home care in Finchley. It starts with a free assessment at home with Jackie, our registered manager, and a written care plan. Live-in care can be arranged anywhere in N3, N12 and N2. Visiting care is possible in some cases, but Finchley is about an hour from our Lewisham office, so whether we can staff regular visits depends on which carers are free when you call.
Three Finchleys, three kinds of house
"Finchley" means one of three places, and the housing in each shapes the care.
- Church End (N3), around Finchley Central station, Ballards Lane and Regents Park Road. Edwardian terraces and interwar semis on tree-lined side roads, plus purpose-built flats above and behind the shops. In a terrace the bathroom is almost always upstairs, so the stairs are usually the first thing we look at.
- North Finchley (N12), centred on Tally Ho Corner and the artsdepot. More interwar semis, some 1930s mansion blocks along Ballards Lane, and Finchley Memorial Hospital on Granville Road. A semi with a third bedroom is the easiest kind of home in which to set up live-in care.
- East Finchley (N2), along the High Road by the art deco Phoenix Cinema. Victorian and Edwardian terraces, often narrow, with steep straight staircases and small back bathrooms. Hoists and wheelchairs need measuring for before anything is ordered.
Is visiting home care available in Finchley?
Sometimes. Finchley Central and East Finchley are on the High Barnet branch of the Northern line, so a carer coming from south-east London can get there without too many changes, but it still takes around an hour each way. Several short calls a day are hard to staff at that distance; a single longer visit, such as a morning call for washing and dressing, is more realistic. Ring us with the postcode and the times you need, and we will tell you plainly whether we can cover them.
The 143 bus links East Finchley, Finchley Central and Hendon Central, and the 125, 221 and 263 call at Tally Ho Corner. For drivers, there are controlled parking zones around Finchley Central, North Finchley and East Finchley stations. If you live in one and receive home visits, apply to Barnet Council for a Carer's Parking Permit before visits start.
Finchley Memorial is not an A&E. The hospital on Granville Road is a community site run with the Royal Free London trust, used for clinics and outpatient appointments. Emergency admissions from Finchley go to the Royal Free in Hampstead or to Barnet Hospital, and that is where discharge planning happens. If a ward is talking about sending someone home with care, call us while they are still planning. Our hospital discharge support page explains what we need to know.
For the family member doing the caring
Finchley has an advantage most of Barnet does not: the borough's carers' centre is on the doorstep. Barnet Carers, at Global House, 303 Ballards Lane, carries out carers' assessments by phone, online or, in a limited number of cases, in person. It also helps with forms and short breaks.
Age UK Barnet is in East Finchley too, at the Ann Owens Centre on Oak Lane. It runs dementia day sessions there on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A day session for your relative and a respite arrangement with us can work together: a live-in carer for the fortnight you are away, or a sit-in so you can get out.
Live-in care in a Finchley semi
The interwar semis of Church End and North Finchley usually have the one thing live-in care needs: a spare bedroom the carer can call their own. The carer lives in and is entitled to a proper break every day, which we agree with you when the care plan is written. Because they live there, our distance from Finchley stops mattering. For a couple, one live-in carer can support both people.
Can Barnet Council help pay for home care in Finchley?
Possibly. Ask Barnet's Social Care Direct (020 8359 5000) for a needs assessment; if the stairs or bath are the problem, ask in the same call for an occupational therapy assessment, since equipment such as a bath lift or stair rail may come before paid care. The council then means-tests any care it arranges, and you can take its share as a direct payment to use with us. We quote in writing after our own assessment. The council route, Continuing Healthcare and direct payments are covered on our Barnet home care page.

Finchley questions
Questions families ask us about Finchley. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionDad's terraced house in East Finchley has one bathroom, upstairs. Can he stay there?
Often, yes. The usual options are a stairlift, a commode or downstairs bed for a period, or a bathing assessment by the council's occupational therapists. We look at the stairs and the bathroom at the assessment and tell you honestly if we think they have become unsafe.
Is Finchley closer to you than the rest of Barnet?
A little. Finchley Central is about an hour from Lewisham High Street, against 65 to 80 minutes for Edgware, Whetstone or High Barnet. That still makes visits a case-by-case question. Live-in care is always available.
Where do I go for a carer's assessment if I live in N3 or N12?
Barnet Carers on Ballards Lane carries out carers' assessments. You can also ask Social Care Direct, which will point you to them.
Mum has a flat above the shops on Ballards Lane. Is there room for a live-in carer?
Only if there is a spare bedroom the carer can use as their own. If there is none, we would talk about visits or respite instead.
