Home Care in Hatch End

Live-in carers, short-term cover for family carers and, when we have someone free, visiting care for older people in Hatch End, HA5, from the Uxbridge Road parade to Headstone Lane.

We can arrange home care in Hatch End, and in practice that usually means a live-in carer who moves into the spare room. Hatch End is on the far north-west edge of London from our Lewisham office, so regular visits only work when we have a carer free who can make the journey. A free home assessment comes first, and we will tell you then what we can and cannot cover.

Who would come, and how?

Hatch End station is on the Overground's Lioness line, typically just under 40 minutes from Euston. Add the trip from Lewisham to Euston and a visiting carer is travelling well over an hour each way. Short morning and evening calls do not work well over that distance.

Live-in care avoids the problem. The carer arrives, lives in, and takes breaks agreed in the care plan. Hatch End's interwar and Edwardian semis and detached houses nearly always have a spare bedroom, and many have a downstairs room that can become a bedroom if the stairs become too much.

Where Hatch End meets Hertfordshire

Hatch End sits on the Uxbridge Road between Pinner and Harrow Weald, with countryside just to the north. Carpenders Park, one stop up the line, is already in Hertfordshire. That boundary matters for care. A Hatch End address is Harrow Council's responsibility, but a few streets north the council is Hertfordshire County Council, with different forms and phone numbers. Check which side of the line the house is before you ring anyone.

For Harrow addresses, the council's Adult Social Care team, reached through Access Harrow on 020 8901 2680, carries out the free needs assessment. Our Harrow home care page explains each step.

Which hospital will Mum come home from?

For most Hatch End residents it is Northwick Park Hospital, Harrow's A&E, run by London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. The H14 bus runs from Hatch End to the hospital, which helps with visiting and outpatient appointments. Because Hatch End is on the northern edge of the borough, some people end up at Watford General instead.

Whichever ward it is, Harrow Council offers free reablement for up to six weeks after a hospital stay, and it is often the first help at home. If more support is needed once reablement ends, or if a live-in carer would make the first weeks safer, call us while she is still on the ward. Our hospital discharge support page explains how it works.

How much does home care cost in Hatch End?

It depends on the hours, so we quote in writing after the assessment, not over the phone. If Harrow Council finds someone eligible, its financial assessment decides what they pay, and the council's share can come as a direct payment. Where needs are mainly health needs, ask the GP or ward about NHS Continuing Healthcare. Our paying for care guide covers both.

A break for the person doing the caring

Respite care here usually means a live-in carer for a week or two while a husband, wife or daughter has a holiday or a rest. Harrow Carers in North Harrow supports unpaid carers in the borough, and the council can carry out a carer's assessment of its own.

Hatch End: your questions

Questions families ask us about Hatch End. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad still goes to concerts at Harrow Arts Centre. Can a carer take him?

Yes. Harrow Arts Centre is on the Uxbridge Road in Hatch End, and an evening out there can be built into a live-in carer's week or a companionship session. Keeping the things he enjoys is part of good care.

We live just over the border in Carpenders Park. Can you still help?

Ask us. Live-in care works the same on either side of the boundary. The difference is that council funding and assessments would come from Hertfordshire, not Harrow.

Mum has a big garden she can no longer manage. Is that something a carer does?

Carers can help her potter, water the pots and sit out with her, and home help covers light household jobs. Heavy gardening is work for a gardener. We can help her decide what she wants to keep doing herself.

Do you have carers living in Hatch End?

We do not claim a local team. Our office is in Lewisham, and in Hatch End we mainly provide live-in carers who move in for the length of the placement. Jackie, our registered manager, can explain on 0203 375 4047 what we could offer.
