Home Care in Harrow Weald

Live-in care for people and couples in Harrow Weald, HA3, from the High Road and Uxbridge Road up towards Harrow Weald Common, plus respite and visits when a carer is available.

We can provide home care in Harrow Weald, mostly as live-in care, where a carer moves into the spare room and stays. Harrow Weald is a long way from our Lewisham office and has no station of its own, so visiting care depends on whether we have a carer who can reach you at the right times. Call us and we will arrange a free home assessment and give you an honest answer.

Getting to Harrow Weald without a station

The nearest stations are Headstone Lane to the west and Harrow & Wealdstone to the south. From there it is a bus ride up the hill. The area is well served by buses, including the 140, 182, 258, 340, H12, H18 and H19, but a carer coming from south-east London would need a train and a bus each way. That is why live-in care is usually the right fit.

Carers who drive find it easier. Away from the town centres most Harrow Weald streets have no parking controls, so cars can usually park close to the door.

Houses on the slope up to the common

Harrow Weald climbs north from the Wealdstone end towards Old Redding and the woods of Harrow Weald Common and Bentley Priory, where the land drops away to views over London. Gilbert of Gilbert and Sullivan lived at Grim's Dyke, now a hotel, at the top of the hill. The homes below are mostly interwar semis and detached houses, with some 1960s and 70s estates and sheltered housing.

The larger interwar houses suit live-in care well. There is room for a carer's bedroom, often a downstairs room that can take a profiling bed, and a garden to sit out in. One live-in carer can support both partners in a couple, with full personal care for one and lighter help for the other.

Will Mum have to sell the house to pay for care at home?

No. When Harrow Council works out what someone pays towards care in their own home, the value of the home they live in is not counted. Savings, pensions and other income are. The house only comes into it if someone moves permanently into a care home. The council's paying for care page explains its financial assessment. For care we arrange privately, we give a written quote after the assessment, not over the phone.

The care needs assessment itself is free for everyone. Start it through Access Harrow on 020 8901 2680 or the council's assessment page. Our Harrow home care page covers the rest, including Northwick Park discharges and direct payments.

Sheltered flats are different. Harrow Weald's 1960s and 70s estates include sheltered housing. If your relative lives in one of these schemes, check with the scheme manager what the warden or alarm service covers. Personal care, such as washing, dressing and help with medicines, is usually arranged separately, and that is the part we can provide.

Respite for husbands, wives and children who care

If you are looking after a husband or wife and getting older yourself, respite care can be a live-in carer covering a week while the main carer rests or goes into hospital themselves. Harrow Council offers carer's assessments, and Harrow Carers in North Harrow offers registration, training and a carer card.

Harrow Weald FAQs

Questions families ask us about Harrow Weald. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad has had a hip replaced at Stanmore. Can you help when he comes home?

Yes. The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital on Brockley Hill is close to Harrow Weald. A live-in carer can help with washing, dressing and the exercises the physiotherapists set until he is steady again. See our hospital discharge page and call us before he is discharged.

Our house is up near the common and the road is steep. Is that a problem?

Not for care inside the home. It matters for walks and outings, so we look at the route to the car or the bus stop during the assessment. A live-in carer is there to help with getting out as well as with care at home.

Can one carer look after both my parents?

Usually, yes. A single live-in carer can support a couple, and the care plan sets out what each person needs. If both need two-person help to move, we will tell you honestly that one carer is not enough.

Mum wants to stay at home until the end. Can you support that?

Our palliative care works alongside her GP and the community nurses, who handle the clinical side. If she is in Northwick Park and wants to come home for the end of her life, ask the ward about fast-track NHS Continuing Healthcare, which can fund care at home quickly. A live-in carer gives day-to-day care and company, so she can stay in the house she knows.
