Home Care in Northwood and Northwood Hills
Live-in care, palliative care at home and respite cover in HA6, from Green Lane and the streets around Mount Vernon Hospital to Northwood Hills.
Yes, we provide home care in Northwood, mainly through live-in carers who move into the home. Northwood is at the far northern tip of Hillingdon, an hour and a half or more from our Lewisham office, so short daily visits are rarely practical; a live-in carer covers the whole day. A free home assessment comes first, then a written care plan.
Which council covers your Northwood address?
Check this before you ring anyone. Northwood and Northwood Hills are in the London Borough of Hillingdon, but the HA6 postcode carries on north into Moor Park, which is in Three Rivers District, Hertfordshire. Two houses with the same postcode can have different councils.
For a Hillingdon address, adult social care starts with Hillingdon Social Care Direct on 01895 556633, or the online form on the council's applying for social care page. Our Hillingdon home care page covers that route in full. For a Moor Park address, the assessment comes from Hertfordshire County Council's adult care services. Live-in care works the same either side of the line.
Large houses, and retirement flats near the station
Northwood's older residents tend to live in one of two kinds of home. The first is a large Edwardian or interwar house with a long garden, often lived in for decades. There is almost always a spare bedroom for a live-in carer, and often a ground-floor room that can become a bedroom if the stairs become too much. The harder question is usually the garden and the upkeep, which a carer can help with only lightly.
The second is a retirement apartment near Green Lane or the station, chosen after downsizing. These have lifts and are designed for older people, but many have one bedroom, which rules out live-in care unless there is a second room. If a parent in a one-bedroom retirement flat needs more help, it is worth talking it through with us early, because the options are narrower.
Mount Vernon Hospital is on the doorstep
Mount Vernon Hospital on Rickmansworth Road is part of The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It handles planned surgery and outpatients and has a minor injuries unit, but it has no A&E: emergency admissions go to Hillingdon Hospital in Uxbridge, and that is where most discharges come from. The site also hosts the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, so a Northwood resident having cancer treatment may be going home between appointments only a mile or two away. Help at home during treatment, such as personal care on bad days or company on the way to clinic, is something we can plan for.
For GP care, Northwood Health Centre on Neal Close, off Acre Way, houses several surgeries. District nursing for housebound adults comes from Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust, usually arranged by the GP.
How do I arrange end-of-life care at home in Northwood?
Talk to the GP or the hospital team first, because they coordinate the clinical side. Michael Sobell House, the inpatient hospice at Mount Vernon, is run by Harlington Hospice, which also runs a 24/7 clinical advice line for Hillingdon on 020 3824 1268. Our part is the personal care and the company: a live-in carer who stays with the person through the day and night, alongside the nurses and hospice team. Read more on our palliative care page.
Respite for a husband or wife
A live-in carer can take over for a week or two so the main carer can rest or go away. Hillingdon's carer's assessment can lead to a respite budget, and Carers Trust Hillingdon in Uxbridge gives unpaid carers free advice. Northwood Hills Library hosts one of the council's free dementia groups. See our respite care page for how a short stay works.

Northwood FAQs
Questions families ask us about Northwood. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionHow much does live-in care cost in Northwood?
We quote in writing after the free assessment, because it depends on the care needed and whether the carer will be up at night. If the council or the NHS may contribute, through a financial assessment or NHS Continuing Healthcare, our paying for care guide explains how.
Dad has radiotherapy at Mount Vernon. Can a carer go with him?
Yes. A live-in carer can go with him to appointments and help him on the days afterwards when he is tired. Tell us the treatment schedule at the assessment so we can plan around it.
My parents are in Moor Park, not Northwood proper. Does that change anything?
Not for live-in care. It changes who does the council assessment: Hertfordshire County Council, not Hillingdon.
Mum's retirement flat off Green Lane has one bedroom. What can you offer?
Live-in care needs a separate bedroom for the carer, so it may not be possible there. Visiting care depends on whether we have a carer who can travel to Northwood. Call Jackie on 0203 375 4047 and she will tell you honestly what we can do.
