Home Care in South Harrow

Medication support, personal care, live-in carers and respite for families in South Harrow, HA2: Northolt Road, Roxeth, Grange Farm and the 1930s streets towards Sudbury Hill.

Yes, we arrange home care in South Harrow, as live-in care or, when a carer is free for the hours you need, as visits. We are based in Lewisham, so South Harrow is a long journey for a visiting carer, and we will say plainly after a free home assessment what we can cover. The Piccadilly line from South Harrow also runs straight to Uxbridge, where one of our supported living homes is.

Northolt Road and the streets behind it

South Harrow grew out of the old hamlet of Roxeth, at the bottom of Roxeth Hill below Harrow on the Hill. The fields filled with housing in the first half of the 20th century, and Northolt Road became the high street. It is a busy, everyday one: grocers, butchers, takeaways and pubs, and South Harrow bus station.

For care, the housing falls into three groups:

  1. 1930s terraces and semis on the side streets, two storeys with the bathroom upstairs. Rails, a second banister and a raised toilet seat often go in first, and the council's occupational therapists can assess for them.
  2. The Grange Farm estate, which the council has been regenerating. Rebuilt homes generally have lifts and level floors. If a move is coming, it is worth asking about accessible bathrooms before the keys are handed over.
  3. Newer flats along Northolt Road, usually with lifts, though second bedrooms can be small. A live-in carer needs a proper room of their own.

Is South Harrow in Harrow or Ealing?

South Harrow is in Harrow, but Northolt, just to the south, is in Ealing. Families on the border sometimes contact the wrong council. If the address is in Harrow, start with Harrow Council's Adult Social Care team through Access Harrow: phone 020 8901 2680, or use the online BetterCare Support self-assessment. The needs assessment is free, and a separate financial assessment follows if the council arranges or funds care. Our Harrow home care page has the full route, including direct payments.

Tablets are often where help starts. A new prescription after a stay at Northwick Park, a blister pack from one of the Northolt Road pharmacies that has stopped making sense, doses missed or doubled. A medication support visit means a trained carer prompts or gives the medicines and records each dose on a chart. That can matter more than any other part of a visit.

After Northwick Park

Northwick Park Hospital is Harrow's A&E, and the H9 and H10 buses run between South Harrow and the hospital. Before someone comes home, the council says it will discuss support with them on the ward. Its free reablement service can run for up to six weeks. If you want care in place after that, or alongside it at weekends, ring us while the discharge is still being planned.

Live-in care and short breaks

A semi with three bedrooms has room for a live-in carer, who also takes care of the travel problem. For family carers who need a rest, respite can be a live-in carer for a week or two. Our Uxbridge home, a direct Piccadilly line ride away, also takes respite stays; see supported living. Harrow Carers, on Pinner Road in North Harrow, supports unpaid carers in the borough.

South Harrow FAQs

Questions from South Harrow families

Questions families ask us about South Harrow. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Uncle lives on the Northolt side of the border. Which council do we call?

If his postcode puts him in Northolt, it is the London Borough of Ealing. Its adult social care team does the assessment there. We can still talk to you about live-in care.

Can a carer handle Mum's blister packs from the pharmacy on Northolt Road?

Yes. Our carers work from her medication chart and record each dose. They can collect repeat prescriptions too, if that is in the care plan. Changes to what she takes must come from her GP or pharmacist, not from the carer.

Dad's flat on Grange Farm is being rebuilt. Should we wait to arrange care?

No. Care can start in his current home and move with him. Tell us the timetable, and tell the housing team about his needs, so the new flat suits a carer, a hoist or a wheelchair if he needs them.

Is there parking for a carer near South Harrow station?

Northolt Road is a busy main road with the bus station on it, so stopping outside a shopfront flat is rarely possible. The station area is a controlled parking zone, and if the flat or house is inside it, a visitor permit lets a carer park nearby. Check the zone hours on the signs, and tell us at the assessment where a carer can actually leave a car.

Mum has dementia and gets anxious in the afternoons. Can you help?

A sit-in or dementia care visit at the hardest time of day can help, if we have a carer for those hours. Harrow's Annie's Place dementia hub in Harrow town centre also runs sessions for people with dementia and their carers.
