Home Care in Stanmore and Canons Park
Care at home in HA7, from Stanmore Broadway and Old Church Lane up towards Stanmore Common and Bentley Priory, and across to Canons Park. Including support after surgery at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.
Yes, we can provide home care in Stanmore. Most of it is live-in care, where a carer lives in the home after our free assessment and written care plan. Stanmore is at the end of the Jubilee line, which runs straight through London Bridge, so it is the most direct part of Harrow for us to reach from Lewisham. The journey is still over an hour, which means visiting calls depend on having a carer free for that run.
Coming home after an operation at the RNOH
The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital on Brockley Hill is a national specialist centre for spinal, joint and complex orthopaedic surgery. It has no A&E, so emergencies from Stanmore go to Northwick Park. But if someone in HA7 is having a planned hip, knee or spinal operation, it may well be at the RNOH, a few minutes up the road.
After that kind of surgery the first weeks are about getting in and out of bed, on and off the toilet, and up and down stairs safely, with exercises done properly and medication taken on time. Harrow Council offers free reablement for up to six weeks after a hospital stay, following a social care assessment. If more help is needed, or the family wants a carer in the house from day one, a live-in carer can cover personal care, medication prompts and the household while the person recovers. Talk to us before the admission date if you can. Planning ahead of a booked operation is much easier than arranging care from the ward.
Will Harrow Council pay for home care in Stanmore?
It might contribute. Two steps decide it. First, a needs assessment, which is free whatever your income; start it through the council's BetterCare online tool or on 020 8901 2680, as explained on the Harrow adult social care pages. Second, a financial assessment, which works out what you pay. If the council agrees a budget, you can take it as a direct payment and use it to pay for our care. If the needs are mainly health needs, ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare. We give our own price in writing after the assessment. More on the borough is on our Harrow home care page.
Large houses, gated developments and lift blocks
HA7 is mostly substantial interwar and post-war detached and semi-detached houses, with newer gated developments and apartment blocks, some on former institutional land such as the old RAF Stanmore Park site. There are also several retirement and sheltered schemes. A detached house nearly always has the spare bedroom live-in care needs. The apartments have lifts and level floors, which suits someone with limited mobility, though a second bedroom can be small. Gated developments are easy to forget: tell us about gate codes, concierge desks and visitor parking at the assessment.
Faith and food at home. Stanmore has a long-established Jewish community, with Stanmore and Canons Park Synagogue on London Road. If keeping a kosher kitchen, Shabbat or festival routines matter, tell us at the assessment and write them into the care plan. The same goes for any other faith or diet. Jewish Care's Sandringham campus on Common Road also runs a community centre and a centre for people living with dementia, which some families use alongside care at home.
Live-in care
In HA7's larger houses the carer's room is rarely the sticking point. The practical questions are more often how a live-in carer without a car gets from a house up towards the common down to the shops on The Broadway, and who covers the daily break. One carer can support a couple. For someone living with dementia, a live-in carer can also keep up visits to Jewish Care's dementia centre at Sandringham if that is already part of the week.
Respite for Stanmore carers
If you look after a husband, wife or parent, a live-in carer can take over for a planned break. Ask Harrow Council for a carer's assessment, and see our respite care page for how short stays work.

Questions from Stanmore families
Questions families ask us about Stanmore. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum's knee replacement at the RNOH is booked. When should we call you?
Now, ideally. We can do the assessment at home before she goes in, look at the stairs, bathroom and bed, and have a plan ready for when the hospital confirms discharge. We cannot promise a start date until we know the details, but early notice helps a great deal.
Can a live-in carer keep a kosher kitchen?
Yes, if that is what the household needs. We write the rules of the kitchen into the care plan so the carer follows them exactly: separate utensils, what may be cooked when, and anything that changes on Shabbat or festivals.
We are in Canons Park. Is that covered?
Yes. Canons Park is in Harrow and on the same Jubilee line. If your address is across the A5 on the Edgware side, you are in Barnet, and the council route is different, but we can still provide care.
Is the Jubilee line enough for you to do daily visits?
It makes Stanmore easier than Pinner or Hatch End, but it is still more than an hour from our office. Short daily calls depend on having a carer available for that journey at those times. Ask us with the address and the hours you have in mind.
Is there one of your supported living homes near Stanmore?
Not close. Our homes are in Uxbridge, Whitton and Kingston upon Thames, and Uxbridge is the nearest from HA7 by car. See supported living for details.
