Home Care in Hackney Wick
Care at home between the Lee Navigation, the Hertford Union Canal and Wick Road, for older residents on the estates and for younger disabled adults in the new canal-side flats.
Yes, we provide home care in Hackney Wick, E9, including personal care, medication support and live-in care. Our carers reach the Wick by public transport from Lewisham, so visits depend on having a carer free at the times you need: tell us the address and we will say what we can cover. Every package starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan.
Two kinds of Hackney Wick
The Wick has changed faster than anywhere else in the borough. The old factories and warehouses along White Post Lane and the Hackney Cut, the stretch of the Lee Navigation that runs through it, have become studios, and new blocks of flats have gone up towards the Olympic Park. Those new buildings usually have lifts, level thresholds and wide corridors, so they are among the easiest homes in Hackney to provide care in.
Most older residents live in the other Hackney Wick: the council estates around Wick Road and Kenworthy Road. The Trowbridge Estate was built by the Greater London Council in the 1960s with seven 21-storey towers, and much of it was replaced with lower-rise housing between 1985 and 1996. For them, the practical questions are the usual estate ones: stairs, lifts, a bath without a shower, and how far it is to the shops.
Care for younger disabled adults
Step-free new flats make the Wick a practical place to live for working-age adults with a physical disability, a spinal injury or a long-term condition, and home care is not only for older people. Our CQC registration covers adults under 65 and people with physical disabilities and sensory impairments. A care plan for a younger adult looks different: help getting up and ready for work or college, personal care fitted around their own timetable, and help with cooking, shopping and laundry through home help visits. Where needs are higher, such as a hoist, catheter or bowel care, that is complex care and we plan it with the person's health team.
Is Hackney Wick in Hackney or Tower Hamlets?
Both, depending on which side of the line you live. The borough boundary runs along Wallis Road and the railway at Hackney Wick station. Fish Island, south of that line and on both banks of the Hertford Union Canal, is in Tower Hamlets, even though it is often called Hackney Wick. The council that assesses and funds care is the one where the person lives, so check the council tax bill before you apply. We cover both.
Can I get home care in Hackney Wick paid for by the council?
If the address is on the Hackney side, ask Hackney Adult Social Care for a needs assessment through the council's online request or on 020 8356 6262. If the person is eligible, a financial assessment works out what they contribute. Instead of the council arranging care, you can ask for direct payments and choose an agency yourself. People with mainly health needs should also ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare. We give a written quote after our own assessment, not over the phone. The council route is explained more fully on our Hackney home care page.
Event days at the Olympic Park. Hackney Wick's parking zone K is normally controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays, but on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and London Stadium event days it runs into the evening and covers weekend afternoons too. If a care plan has a carer driving, check the council's zone times and tell us about events.
Getting here
Hackney Wick station is on the Overground Mildmay line, one stop from Stratford. From Lewisham, a carer can take the DLR direct to Stratford and change there. Buses fill in the gaps: the 276 and 488 stop at the station, the 30 and 236 also serve the Wick and the 339 serves Fish Island.
The local hospital is Homerton University Hospital, a short bus ride away on the 276 or 488, which both stop at the hospital.
Live-in care, short breaks and our supported living homes
A new two-bedroom flat often has the spare room that live-in care needs. If a partner or parent is doing the caring, respite care can give them a regular break, and the City & Hackney Carers Centre can help them ask the council for a carer's assessment. The Mildmay line also runs from Hackney Wick to Richmond without a change, which is the closest rail link to our supported living home in Whitton.

Hackney Wick questions
Questions families ask us about Hackney Wick. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionI'm 34 and use a wheelchair. Do you only care for older people?
No. We are registered to support adults under 65 and people with physical disabilities. We will plan visits around your work, study and social life.
My flat is on Fish Island. Is that covered?
Yes. Fish Island is in Tower Hamlets, so any council funding goes through Tower Hamlets, not Hackney. Our care is the same either side of the boundary.
Can a carer help me get to the Olympic Park or along the towpath?
Yes. Getting out is part of a good care plan, and a companionship visit can include a walk or a trip to the park. We will check access and step-free routes with you at the assessment.
Our old estate flat has a bath I can't get into any more. What can you do?
Until it is adapted, a carer can help with a strip wash. Ask Hackney Adult Social Care for an occupational therapy assessment for a bath lift or a level-access shower.
