Visiting Home Care in Dalston

Carers who come to you in E8, along Kingsland High Street, around Ridley Road and Dalston Lane, and on the estates either side of the high street.

Yes. Dalston is one of the parts of Hackney where regular visiting care is most realistic for us, because the Overground runs straight up from south-east London. Carers can help with washing and dressing, meals, medication and getting out, and live-in care is available too. It starts with a free assessment in your home.

Can carers get to Dalston from south-east London?

More easily than to most of Hackney. The Windrush line runs from Brockley and New Cross, a short hop from our office in Lewisham, through Shoreditch and Haggerston to Dalston Junction without a change. Dalston Kingsland, on the Mildmay line, is a few minutes' walk away, and the 30, 38, 56, 67, 76, 149, 242, 243, 277 and 488 buses fan out from the junction. That puts Dalston in the 40 to 50 minute range from SE13, close enough to plan morning and evening calls with some confidence. We still confirm availability for your times before agreeing them.

Dalston's parking zone C runs Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 6.30pm, so carers here nearly always arrive on foot from the station or the bus.

Three kinds of Dalston home

  • The towers around Dalston Square. Newer flats with lifts and level thresholds. The easiest for a wheelchair, a hoist or a walking frame, though bathrooms can be compact.
  • The estates either side of Kingsland High Street. Where many of Dalston's older residents actually live. On upper floors, everything depends on the lift, and we plan for the days it is out of action.
  • Converted Victorian terraces. Upper flats up a narrow stair, often with a bath and no shower. We look at bathing safety and what Hackney's occupational therapists might fit.

The high street is part of the care

Ridley Road Market and Kingsland High Street are on the doorstep, and for someone who has shopped there for years, a trip to the market can be the best part of the week. A carer can go with someone who uses a frame or a wheelchair, help carry the shopping home and put it away. For families from Dalston's long-established Turkish and Kurdish community, and for anyone else, tell us how meals should be cooked and what the household eats, and it goes into the care plan.

Dalston is also busy late into the night. For someone living above or near the bars and clubs, that can affect sleep and the timing of a bedtime call, so it is worth mentioning when we visit.

The Marie Lloyd Centre is close by. At 329 Queensbridge Road, E8 3LA, a short walk south of Dalston, it is home to Age UK East London and the City & Hackney Carers Centre (020 8533 0951). Between them they cover advice, activities, falls prevention, and support and carer's assessment requests for family members.

Doctors and hospital

The Sandringham Practice and the Dalston Practice share a site on Madinah Road, E8 1PG. Beechwood Medical Centre is at 86A Dalston Lane, and the Queensbridge Group Practice is on Holly Street. Most Dalston patients are admitted to and discharged from Homerton University Hospital. When a discharge is coming, call us early and see hospital discharge support.

Arranging care through Hackney Council

The council's service centre is at 1 Hillman Street, E8, but you do not need to go in. Ask Hackney Adult Social Care for an assessment online or on 020 8356 6262; a financial assessment follows if needs are eligible, and any council funding can be taken as a direct payment if you want to choose the agency yourself. We quote after our own assessment and publish no prices. Our Hackney home care page has the detail on assessments and timescales.

Live-in and respite

Spare bedrooms are scarce in Dalston flats, so live-in care works best in the family houses and larger flats. For short breaks, extra visits while the main carer is away are often simpler. See respite care in Hackney.

Dalston FAQs

Common questions about care in Dalston

Questions families ask us about Dalston. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Can a carer take my aunt to Ridley Road Market?

Yes. We plan the visit long enough for a proper shop at her pace, with help carrying everything home and putting it away.

Are morning visits realistic in Dalston?

More so than further north in Hackney, because the Windrush line comes straight up from south-east London. We still check we have a carer for your exact times before agreeing them.

Dad lives above the shops on Kingsland High Street and the noise keeps him awake. Can the bedtime call be later?

We can talk about it. Bedtime calls are planned around what helps him sleep, which may mean a later visit or a quieter routine before bed, but it depends on having a carer free at that hour. Mention the noise at the assessment so it goes into the plan.

Does a Dalston address with an N16 postcode change anything?

No. The N16 streets just north of Dalston, up towards Rectory Road, are still Hackney, so the same council and the same arrangements apply.
